Can Newtown carnival make a comeback for summer 2026?

Newtown's Carnival Committee have made a plea for volunteers to help make sure the event can return to the Powys town for 2026.
While Newtown Carnival shared the news that it could not go ahead with the 2025 carnival earlier this year due to a lack of volunteers, hopes that the event might return in 2026 depend on recruiting volunteers to help with the committee.
The 2025 event was cancelled in February, after the committee shared the news that five dedicated volunteers had stepped down with immediate effect and that the remaining members did not have the experience or the capacity to deliver the event planned for June 2025.
The committee is now looking for eight volunteers to attend a meeting once a month towards ensuring the event can return for summer 2026, as well as volunteers to help set up the carnival itself.
Sharing a plea for help via social media, a Newtown Carnival spokesperson said: 'For Newtown Carnival to return in 2026 as expected, the Carnival Committee requires eight committed people to attend a meeting once a month, plus carrying out tasks occasionally between meetings.
'For the Carnival weekend there are also volunteers required to set up the Carnival lorry, marquees, chairs and tables on the Friday, run the event on the Saturday, then complete take down on the Sunday evening after Silver Band have completed their event.
'Plus we need people to judge the lorries and fancy dress entries, manage the parade route safety, then work on the field during the event.'
The committee said current roles in the carnival planning include a chairperson, secretary, treasurer, fundraiser and someone to select the Carnival Queen and King, as well as a pitch manager, route manager and event photographer.
Carnival committee meetings are held on the last Tuesday of every month at 6.30pm in the town centre.
The carnival spokesperson added: 'So now is the time to step forward.
'If you have experience in running events, have the capacity to commit to the work required, are interested in seeing this much loved community event return for 2026, please send an email to newtowncarnival@hotmail.co.uk with your contact details, interest and experience.
'We have a lot of fun and the events are highly rewarding for everyone involved, so we hope some people come forward to join us soon, so that we can guarantee the return of Newtown Carnival for 2026.'

Treat every question like it's the first time it has been asked

Trinidadian-born Andrew Rajpaulsingh is the founding force behind Bacchanalia, one of Notting Hill Carnival's most influential bands. With more than 30 years' experience as a custodian of UK carnival culture, this year he is working with the black-owned beauty brand Mielle Organics to share his lessons in community building. 1. Lead with vigilance. In high-pressure environments, anticipating problems is far more effective than reacting to them. Keeping your head on a swivel combined with quiet, early intervention, keeps things running smoothly and prevents small issues from becoming major ones. 2. Be the calmest person in the room. When things go wrong, as they inevitably do, the leader's composure sets the tone for everyone else. Staying calm allows others to stay focused and think clearly. 3. Know everyone's journey. Effective leadership starts with understanding each team member's experience from beginning to end. This awareness helps leaders make better decisions and build stronger, more cohesive teams. 4. Know your role in the bigger picture. In event planning, executing your part is like running an event within the event itself. Precision and awareness of how your work fits into the whole are essential. 5. Patience is paramount. Treat every question like it's the first time it's been asked. What may feel routine to a leader is often brand new to someone else. Respect builds trust. 6. Purpose is better than ego. Leadership driven by status doesn't last. When the work is motivated by vision, it will gain due momentum.

The decision to cancel was made after organisers were asked in a consultation with with Birmingham City Council's Safety Advisory Group (SAG), West Midlands Police, and Home Office officials, how they would mitigate the risk of a major incident. 'Understand disappointment' The number of open side streets along the carnival route were identified as a concern and it was recommended that enhanced security barriers, increased stewarding, and additional access routes for emergency services were event's spokesperson said: "After careful evaluation, carnival organisers concluded that it was impractical, both logistically and financially, to implement the necessary safety measures in time for this year's event."Earlier in the year the city's St Patrick's Parade was also Burgess said the decision had not been taken lightly. "We fully understand the disappointment this brings to families, traders, and partners who make the carnival a success each year," he said. 'All eyes on 2026 carnival' But he said that safety was not an area it was "willing to compromise on".It had not been possible to implement the changes in time for this year's carnival, but attention had now turned to the 2026 event, Mr Burgess said.
