Accidents: Bicyclist taken to the hospital after being hit by a car
May 21—No injuries were reported in a one-vehicle accident Monday in Creston. According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 11:42 a.m., a 2024 Ford E350 box truck, driven by Brenton C. Vanderpluym, 20, of Creston, was southbound in the Casey's General Store parking lot on Townline Street. Vanderpluym turned the truck too sharply and struck a metal barrier near the gas pumps, causing the barrier to become stuck in the rear wheel well of the truck and high-centering the vehicle. A tow service was required for assistance in moving the truck. Damage to the Ford was estimated at $3,000. Damage to the barrier was estimated at $200. — — — — — A Creston bicyclist was transported to the hospital for injuries Monday after being struck by a car. According to a Creston Police report, at approximately 4:24 p.m. a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Helen M. Waddell, 75, of Creston, was northbound on Birch Street. The Jeep stopped at the Irving Street intersection then proceeded northbound. At the same time, Charles R. Balius, 54, of Creston, was westbound on Irving riding a bicycle. As the Jeep proceeded through the intersection, the bicycle collided with the Jeep. Waddell said she looked but did not see the bicycle. Police cite Waddell failing to yield the right-of-way from a stop sign as a contributing factor to the accident. Balius complained of suspected serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Greater Regional Health. Damage to the Jeep was estimated at $500.

The anonymous winners claimed the $349 million Mega Millions jackpot on April 30, about a month after the drawing took place, state lottery officials said in a news release. The individuals weren't the only to benefit from the cash. Casey's General Store in Cortland, a city over 700 miles west of Chicago, received a $500,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. "We took a chance and bought a single Quick Pick ticket," the individuals told state lottery officials. "We're absolutely ecstatic and feel incredibly blessed. We plan to use this money to do good – this unbelievable prize will truly be the gift that keeps on giving." The "historic" win also marked the fourth time an Illinois lottery player has won a Mega Millions jackpot in nearly four years. The next Mega Millions drawing, which has an estimated jackpot of $80 million, will take place on May 2. USA TODAY reached out to Illinois lottery officials on April 30 for additional details about the winners. When is the next Mega Millions drawing? And how do I play? The next drawing, where the winning numbers for the $80 million jackpot will be determined, is Friday, May 2 at 11 p.m. ET. Mega Millions drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. ET. Tickets are available up to 15 minutes before the drawing takes place. Five of the numbers will come from white balls whose numbers range between 1 to 70 and the last number will come from the gold Mega Ball whose numbers range between 1 and 25. Players may also select the "Easy Pick" or "Quick Pick" options, which will have the computer randomly generate six-number sequence. The "Megaplier," a $1 add-on feature, that can increase non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4 or 5 times. Before each regular Mega Millions drawing, the Megaplier is drawn. CHICAGO (WMBD) — It's been about a month but the people who purchased a winning Mega Millions ticket last month have come forward to claim their prize, the Illinois Lottery announced. 'After more than a month of excitement and anticipation, the Illinois Lottery players who won the $349 million Mega Millions jackpot in the March 25 drawing have officially come forward to claim their life-changing prize,' the organization said in a news release. 'We took a chance and bought a single Quick Pick ticket,' shared the lucky winners, nicknamed 'Blessed.' 'We're absolutely ecstatic and feel incredibly blessed. We plan to use this money to do good – this unbelievable prize will truly be the gift that keeps on giving.' The lottery said the winning ticket was purchased at Casey's General Store, located at 70 S. Somonauk Road in Cortland which is in DeKalb County. The store will get $500,000 for having sold the winning ticket. The lottery said this was the fourth time an Illinois Lottery player has won a Mega Millions jackpot in nearly four years: In June 2024, an iLottery player won $552 million – making this the largest prize ever won by an online lottery player in the U.S. In July 2022, a ticket bought at a gas station in Des Plaines won a $1.34 billion Mega Millions jackpot – which remains the largest lottery prize ever won in Illinois. In June 2021, a Mega Millions player won $56 million at a Citgo gas station in Crestwood. Nearly $24 million in ticket sales were generated during the buildup of the jackpot and the Illinois Lottery was able to put more than $9 million into he Common School Fund to support K-12 education in Illinois, the agency said.
