One dream attained by University, another beckons

THEY dared to dream — and dream they did. University proved what can happen when you have a little bit of belief in yourself after making the quarterfinals of the Kate Sheppard Cup for the first time. After a memorable 1-0 victory over the Dunedin City Royals last month, University make the trip to Christchurch to meet Cashmere Technical at English Park on Sunday afternoon. "It's an absolute dream, to be honest," coach Hamish Philip said about making the quarterfinals. "All the hard work that we've been putting in this season and all the foundation work we put in prior coming to fruition, it's immense." Philip was proud to see the way his side had come together. "For us, it's actually the belief in what we're trying to do. "I know that's such a cheesy thing to say, but it's that trust the system of what each player brings ... it's shown on the field, to be honest." Cashmere Technical, who won the South Island league last season, are always tough — but University beat them 2-1 in the league in March. "We've beaten them earlier in the season so I said to them, 'why not again?'." Making the playoffs has not come without its challenges. Only half of the team remained in Dunedin earlier this week due to students heading home for the university break and several American players returning home after the semester. The club had been running a Givealittle page to raise funds to help them get to Christchurch. Some players will be getting some "big opportunities" this weekend, but Philip said they would never back down from the challenge. "We're thankful some of our players are from Christchurch, so we've got those. "Some players are actually flying back for the game because they understand the importance of it, so they've made themselves available and that's thanks to the community helping out. "As a core group, I believe the team is still there. "I will make zero excuses. We are prepared for it. We are a university club and it's a matter of how we deal with it." In the other quarterfinals, Waterside Karori play Phoenix Reserves, Auckland United face West Coast Rangers and Franklin United are home to Eastern Suburbs. In round four of the Chatham Cup tomorrow, Wanaka are home to Christchurch United, and the Royals host Nelson Suburbs.

Striker's return a boost for Cashmere Technical ahead of crucial Coastal clash

Cashmere Technical's recent lift in form and the return of their star striker has them feeling confident ahead of Sunday's crunch match with Coastal Spirit. Garbhan Coughlan came off the bench in Tech's 6-0 win over Selwyn United last weekend, marking his return with a goal after missing several games to attend his brother's wedding in Ireland. Captain Tom Schwarz said Coughlan's return was a big boost, but credited the whole squad for starting to click after a patchy start to the season that saw them drop as low as fifth. 'We had a bit where we weren't playing too badly but we weren't picking up results. It's always nice to play reasonably well and get three points. 'Everyone's aware of Garb's qualities on the football pitch, especially in front of goal, so he adds a massive amount to the team.' Tech are now third, two points behind second-placed Coastal Spirit, who have a game in hand. Only the top two sides at the end of the season qualify for the National League. Kick-off at Linfield Park is at noon on Sunday. Southern League points Chch Utd 23; Coastal 21; Cashmere Tech 19; Ferrymead Bays 17; Nelson 16; Nomads 15; Dunedin CR 13; Wanaka 12; Universities 4; Selwyn Utd 1

PHOTO: CARL COZZONE/DUST MEDIA Cashmere Technical winger Lyle Matthysen celebrated his 250th appearance for the club in style, netting all four goals in a commanding 4-1 Chatham Cup win over Coastal Spirit on Sunday. Now, the 26-year-old hopes the result can ignite a turnaround in Tech's Southern League campaign. Currently sitting third on the ladder, Tech are six points adrift of league leaders Christchurch United and five behind Coastal Spirit in the race for the two National League qualification spots. 'It's what we need. (We) definitely need to start turning up and lifting our performances so we can book a top-two spot,' Matthysen said. 'Next week will be a tough game too (away at Dunedin City Royals) so we need to be firing.' He became just the third player to reach 250 appearances for Cashmere Technical, joining Tom Schwarz and Danny Knight. Matthysen said he never expected to reach the milestone when he debuted, but it eventually became a personal goal. 'As you get onto the first milestone of 50, 100, 200, things like that, you start thinking 'alright, I do want to push on and try and get up there with the older boys',' he said. 'I do love the club, been here for 10 or 11 years now, so I do want to strive on and do great things.' Sunday's cup win also saw Coastal Spirit suffer an early setback, with defender Jack Hale sent off just eight minutes into the match. They were also without first-choice goalkeeper Ellis Hare-Reid due to a head knock. Tech now progress to the third round of the knockout Chatham Cup, joining fellow Canterbury sides Ferrymead Bays and Christchurch United, who beat Selwyn United 4-1 and Nomads 2-0 respectively. This weekend, United looks to keep their spot at the top of the Southern League when they play Wanaka on Saturday, knowing Coastal could overtake them with a win in their game against Universities. Ferrymead Bays host Nomads on Saturday before Selwyn United travels to play Nelson Suburbs on Sunday. Southern League points Chch Utd 19; Coastal 18; Cash Tech 13; Nomads 13; Nelson 13; Ferrymead Bays 13; Dunedin 13; Wanaka 9; Universities 4; Selwyn 1
