Cashmere Tech winger's magic marks milestone match
Cashmere Technical winger Lyle Matthysen celebrated his 250th appearance for the club in style, netting all four goals in a commanding 4-1 Chatham Cup win over Coastal Spirit on Sunday.
Now, the 26-year-old hopes the result can ignite a turnaround in Tech's Southern League campaign.
Currently sitting third on the ladder, Tech are six points adrift of league leaders Christchurch United and five behind Coastal Spirit in the race for the two National League qualification spots.
'It's what we need. (We) definitely need to start turning up and lifting our performances so we can book a top-two spot,' Matthysen said.
'Next week will be a tough game too (away at Dunedin City Royals) so we need to be firing.'
He became just the third player to reach 250 appearances for Cashmere Technical, joining Tom Schwarz and Danny Knight.
Matthysen said he never expected to reach the milestone when he debuted, but it eventually became a personal goal.
'As you get onto the first milestone of 50, 100, 200, things like that, you start thinking 'alright, I do want to push on and try and get up there with the older boys',' he said.
'I do love the club, been here for 10 or 11 years now, so I do want to strive on and do great things.'
Sunday's cup win also saw Coastal Spirit suffer an early setback, with defender Jack Hale sent off just eight minutes into the match. They were also without first-choice goalkeeper Ellis Hare-Reid due to a head knock.
Tech now progress to the third round of the knockout Chatham Cup, joining fellow Canterbury sides Ferrymead Bays and Christchurch United, who beat Selwyn United 4-1 and Nomads 2-0 respectively.
This weekend, United looks to keep their spot at the top of the Southern League when they play Wanaka on Saturday, knowing Coastal could overtake them with a win in their game against Universities.
Ferrymead Bays host Nomads on Saturday before Selwyn United travels to play Nelson Suburbs on Sunday.

Northern seal title with eight-goal rout
Northern clinched their first title in 49 years with a comprehensive victory against Old Boys Invercargill on Saturday. They beat Old Boys 8-1 at Logan Park turf to lift the ODT Men's Southern Premiership trophy — their first league championship since 1976 — with three games to spare. Northern have been completely dominant all year, winning all 13 games and scoring more than 50 goals in an impressive tally. Nick Treadwell's sixth-minute opener settled any nerves for Northern, and Sam Cosgrove's brace in the 36th and 42nd minute added breathing room. Old Boys conceded an own goal as well for Northern to hold a 4-0 lead at halftime and effectively ensure the title was heading back to the Gardens. Rory Hibbert, the competition's leading scorer, bagged a brace, scoring after 47 and 62 minutes to extend his season tally to 18 goals so far. Toby Orchiston scored in the 64th minute and Old Boys' Oliver Milne-Wahren scored the Invercargill side's goal in the 80th. Janci Gorman rounded out the scoring for Northern in the 83rd minute. University moved into second spot by beating Roslyn-Wakari 2-0, after Mosgiel lost 2-0 at home to Green Island. Tate Barron and Ryan Walker scored in each half for Green Island. The Dunedin City Royals jumped ahead of Queens Park and moved to fourth after beating the Invercargill team 1-0. George Barker scored from a penalty for the Royals in the 53rd minute, and Rodrigo Schmidt De Camargo placed his own penalty attempt for Queen's Park wide 20 minutes later. — In the Southern League, the Royals secured a point 1-1 draw with a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser against second-placed Christchurch United in atrocious conditions in Christchurch. Christchurch held the lead at halftime after Joel Stevens guided his effort home despite Jed Collings sliding in on a very waterlogged pitch in a valiant attempt to keep it out. The home side were reduced to 10 when Ben Stroud was given a red in the 80th minute for pulling back Brady Jacobs. They paid the price when Lewis Wall ghosted in behind the defence to get on the end of a long ball that Christchurch let bounce and Wall squeezed his shot past keeper Steven Van Dijk from the edge of the box. Wānaka also came up against atrocious conditions against Nomads United, losing 4-1 in Christchurch. They lost goalkeeper Josh Shackleton to injury after only 37 minutes, leaving substitute outfielder Elijah Gaeth taking over the gloves. Nomads broke the deadlock in the second half and were 2-0 up when Ryan Hamilton scored a bizarre own goal after 65 minutes. Ed Belingher pulled one back for Wanaka on 72 minutes, but Nomads scored another two goals in the last few minutes. Cashmere Tech beat Ferrymead Bays 3-0 to go top of the table, Universities of Canterbury had a 3-3 draw with Selwyn United, and Nelson Suburbs completed the round with a 2-0 win over Coastal Spirit. — Neville Watson

University still in hunt for title
Two second-half goals from Otago University have kept the title race alive — just — in the women's South Island league. They beat Coastal Spirit 2-0 at Logan Park on Saturday, moving to 31 points and remaining a comfortable second on the table behind the Dunedin City Royals, who have a perfect 39 after 13 games. Jemma McCormick and Georgina McEwan scored goals as University gained ascendancy in the second half. After a tight opening half with few chances, University changed their formation after the break. That yielded the first goal just two minutes into the second half, when McCormick scored from a well-rehearsed corner move. The game ebbed and flowed, Laney Whiston in particular having a strong defensive performance to keep Coastal at bay. It took until injury time for the students to guarantee their three points, when McEwan tapped the ball home in just her second appearance. Roslyn Wakari claimed their fourth win of the season, beating Halswell 5-0 in Christchurch. Amelie East-Giles opened the scoring on 40 minutes and got her second on 78 minutes, making it 4-0 after Zara Pratley and Harriet Park had also scored. Park finished off the win in injury time. Yesterday the Dunedin City Royals claimed a 2-0 win over Universities of Canterbury at Tahuna Park, Hannah Mackay-Wright and Amy Hislop scoring first-half goals. In the men's Southern League, the Dunedin City Royals continued their run of not being able to hold on to a lead, when they drew 2-2 with Ferrymead Bays at Logan Park. Bays had a goal disallowed after 15 minutes, before the Royals' Ben Campbell, playing an advanced midfield role, got on the end of a free kick to head home in the 27th minute. Tom Milton doubled the lead on 53 minutes, before Bays pulled one back three minutes later through a Jacob Killick penalty. Luke Pritchard equalised on 65 minutes, and things began looking ominous for the Royals when Connor Neil was sent off on 70 minutes. However, Anhel Toro Perez missed a 94th minute injury time penalty, which would have given Bays a comeback win. Wānaka claimed their fifth win of the season with an emphatic 6-1 victory in Selwyn. Conceding an early goal woke Wānaka, who scored three goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half. The first was to Michael Johnson who scored from the edge of the box. Johnson then turned provider — with a defence splitting pass for Anthony Sprowson to run on to. The pace of Sprowson was causing Selwyn problems and he benefited by scoring his second right on halftime. Ed Belingher rifled in the fourth on the hour mark when he was left unmarked in the penalty box and he smashed his shot into the far corner of the net. Sprowson claimed his hat-trick in the 69th minute — running into another through ball and skipper Jake Thompson finished off the scoring heading home from close range on 73 minutes. In the ODT Women's Southern Premiership Green Island reclaimed top spot from University with a 2-0 victory over the students, thanks to a goal in each half from Hannah Post and Charli Elliott. Dunedin City Royals Reserves are two points off the pace, following a 1-1 draw with Roslyn. Maggie Burgess' second half equaliser cancelled out Aimee Kay's first half opener for Roslyn. The Royals do have games in hand over Green Island and University however. Queens Park beat Northern 3-0. Northern continued their 100% winning streak in the ODT Men's Southern Premiership with a 6-1 victory over Dunedin City Royals. Nick Treadwell opened the scoring after only three minutes. Goals to Rory Hibbert and Jonas Gorman midway through the second half made the game safe. However when Kenny Nagata pulled one back for the Royals with eight minutes to go, it awakened Northern. Hibbert scored a further three goals in the last four minutes. Mosgiel remain second with a 2-0 win over Roslyn Wakari, University beat Northern Hearts 4-0 and Queens Park ran out 6-2 victors over Green Island. — Neville Watson
