‘The game is open' – Ballkani boss insists Conference League tie with Shamrock Rovers remains in the balance
Ballkani boss Orges Shehi feels tomorrow's Conference League tie against Shamrock Rovers remains '50-50' despite his side holding a one-goal lead ahead of the second-leg. Just like they did against Celje 12 months ago, Stephen Bradley's Hoops must overturn a one-goal deficit on home soil on Thursday night if they are to progress to a Conference League play-off, which is likely to be against Portuguese outfit Santa Clara.

Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley says relax as Hoops look to overturn deficit
Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley has warned his players not to go gung-ho in the quest to overturn the deficit to Ballkani in the second leg of their UEFA Conference League third round qualifying clash at Tallaght Stadium. The Hoops are trailing to Sunday Adetunji's goal in the Fadil Vokkri Stadium last week and must score to have a chance of progressing. Bradley's men were far from their best in the clash in Kosovo and an improvement will be needed to reach a play-off round, likely with Portuguese side Santa Clara. Asked what the approach will be to overturning the 1-0 scoreline from six days ago, Bradley told RTÉ Sport: "It's just do what we do, it's perform to the levels that we know we can perform to. "We know we always create chances and score goals and we've just got to be nice and relaxed and understand what we do works. "We don't need to go chasing the game from the first minute, we have to respect them but when we get our moments we have to try to punish them. "Our focus is to try and win the game. "If that comes in 90 minutes, extra-time penalties, whatever way it comes it comes, you can't control that. "What we can control is our performance and if we look after our performance everything else will be fine." The Tallaght side have been near faultless in the Premier Division in recent months and cruised through their Conference second round clash with St Joseph's, leaving many predicting that they would have too much for Ballkani. However, Bradley feels Thursday's opponent are strong and will prove a difficult nut to crack, as evident last week. He likened them to Slovenian outfit Celje, a team the champions-elect disposed of last year in a Europa League qualifier in what was one of their best European performances under the former Arsenal player. Bradley said: "I said before the first game they remind me very much of Celje and I felt that again after we played them. I thought they were very, very similar. "Their wide players are good, the centre forward (Adetunji) is a handful. It was nothing that we didn't expect and nothing that we didn't see coming. We just got to make sure we're better in every department on Thursday. "We want to go as deep as possible in Europe. "We want to win the league. We want to win the FAI Cup. We've said that from day one, there's no shying away from that, that's why we're here. That's what this team and this club is about. Can we do it? Time will tell. "But if you want to go deep in Europe, we've got to make sure we win Thursday, obviously. We've got to make sure that we're at our levels." Graham Burke returns from injury in a boost for the home side, but the now fit Jack Byrne and Aaron McEneff will not be available after being omitted from the squad submitted to UEFA for these matches. He said he will look to his senior players as well as using some recent additions to the squad. "It is important to get that mix but I think the group as a whole is really experienced," Bradley stated. "I think if you look around the group we've got a lot of players that played a lot of games in Europe throughout the year so we've got a lot of experience.

Italian soccer player Fagioli apologizes to ex- teammates named in betting case
Celje's Juanjo Nieto is challenged by Fiorentina's Nicolo Fagioli, rear, during the Europa Conference League first-leg quarterfinal soccer match between Celje and Fiorentina in Celje, Slovenia, Thursday, April 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Igor Kupljenik) MILAN (AP) — Italian soccer player Nicolò Fagioli lashed out at the media on Monday for releasing new details about his struggles with betting on games and apologized to former teammates who have been investigated. Milan prosecutors placed 13 soccer players under investigation last week for illegal online betting, stemming from evidence given by Sandro Tonali and Fagioli in 2023. Both then served lengthy bans, ruling them out for most of last season, after agreeing on plea bargains that also included therapy for a gambling addiction. Advertisement Fagioli — a Juventus midfielder on loan at Fiorentina — was banned for seven months after admitting to betting on matches, while Newcastle's Tonali received a longer suspension of 10 months as his bets also included his team's games — at the time, AC Milan. The Gazzetta dello Sport and other outlets reported how Fagioli reached out to more than 30 people to help pay off a debt of 587,000 euros ($666,000), and used a Milan jewelry shop to help with the payoffs. 'I made mistakes and I paid for them,' Fagioli wrote on Instagram. 'And like anyone who makes a mistake and pays for it, I have every right to get back up. … I was 19 when all this happened and I was overcome by a gambling addiction. I regret it, but life gave me a second opportunity and I want to take advantage of it, having already been punished for everything I deserved to be punished for.' There is no evidence that the other players ever gambled on soccer matches but their names emerged from depositions given by Tonali and Fagioli and analysis of their devices. Advertisement The other players are being investigated for using illegal platforms for online poker and betting on other sports. As such they do not risk a ban, but instead a maximum fine of 250 euros ($280) from Italian authorities. Tonali and Fagioli have also been accused of promoting those sites among their teammates and other soccer players. 'I apologize to all of my teammates and friends who, because of my mistakes, are finding themselves involved or named,' Fagioli added. 'And I want to thank Fiorentina, Juventus, my friends and family, who never stopped supporting me during a tough time. Even if I definitely disappointed them.' ___ AP soccer:
