Swelling Mithi disrupts Mumbai's local services, tracks submerged under 15 inches

The water of the Mithi river has swelled due to the incessant rains, leading to the suspension of railway services on the Central and the harbour railway lines. CR presents plan to set up 1650 CCTVs along railway tracks

Mumbai: The Central Railway (CR) recently came up with an elaborate plan to install 1,650 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras along railway lines, to keep surveillance on tracks, train-parking yards, encroachment zones and hotspots with high crime rates. This decision comes after the August 3 incident, where a long-distance train passenger fell from the train after being struck by the notorious 'fatka gang'. Mumbai, India - June 15, 2020: Commuters at Kurla railway station after Central Railways resume Local Train Service for Essential Staff, during Nationwide Lockdown in the wake of Coronavirus pandemic in Mumbai, India, on Monday, June 15, 2020. (Photo by Vijayanand Gupta/ HT PHOTO) (HT PHOTO) This will help the CR authorities in documenting evidence in cases of untoward incidents and accidents, curbing cases of passenger lootings, spotting members of the fatka gang, and identifying trespassing activities, said a source from CR. 'We will begin with installing the cameras at seven locations near Titwala, Ambivli, Shahad and Vashi stations that are hotspots of fatka-gang attacks. Subsequently, we will expand it in the coming months. In total, 1650 CCTVs will be installed,' said a CR official. There have been 12-15 incidents of fatka-gang attacks since January, of which 50% operate near these railway stations, he added. Fatka gang is a group of notorious robbers stationed near the railway tracks, targeting local and long-distance train passengers to snatch mobile phones and other valuables. They identify locations on rail lines that have a curve where trains slow down and attack the passengers' hands with sticks and stones, causing their phones to fall out of the train. The robbers would then pick up the fallen phone and run away. The name 'fatka' comes from a Marathi word, which means a hit. For their robbery pattern of hitting on the hand, it is named the 'fatka' gang. The railway police have also formed special teams to investigate crimes by such gangs. The other locations to have CCTV cameras installed include Kurla, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Bhiwandi, and Wadala rail stations. Though these CCTV cameras are not equipped with advanced technologies like facial recognition, like those installed at railway stations, they will play a crucial role in tracking movements near tracks, said another CR official.

Girl forgets documents at home, neighbours and rlys' timely help saves academic year

Nagpur: Compassionate railway officials turned saviour for an anxious student whose academic year was at risk and admission to a Mumbai college was almost impossible. It was due to these officials and a neighbour couple at Riddhi Wankhede's Chhatrapati square residence that her admission was secured on the last day — Wednesday — at Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) in Mumbai and her one crucial academic year was saved. Riddhi's BA LLB admission MNLU was almost jeopardised by a goof-up. On Wednesday, Riddhi got a slot for admission at MNLU. She boarded the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto express from Nagpur railway station on Tuesday with her mother, Pallavi, a junior college principal. It was on the train that the mother and daughter realised that the briefcase containing Riddhi's academic documents and credentials — crucial for admission — was missing from among their luggage and had forgotten it at home. The distressed duo then approached chief ticketing inspector Yogesh Deshmukh for help. Adding to their woes, the duo was unable to recall whether the suitcase was left behind on the platform or at home. They requested Deshmukh to confirm if there was any suitcase left behind on the platform. Upon enquiring, Deshmukh said there was no unclaimed luggage on the platform. He requested the mother and daughter to remember where they kept the briefcase last. The Wankhedes said about possibly having forgotten the suitcase just beside the locked residence door. Learning that the suitcase contained documents required on the last day of admission, Deshmukh suggested the Wankhedes ensure the suitcase was brought to the Nagpur railway station, from where he would try to get it ferried to Mumbai CST on a trailing train. The entire episode was shared with senior divisional commercial manager, Central Railways, Aman Mittal. It was Mittal who instructed Deshmukh to do the needful so that Riddhi's admission was not held up. In the meantime, Wankhede's neighbours, Naresh and Rupali Jhunghare, reached Nagpur station with the briefcase. Deshmukh contacted train superintendent Soumyajit Sarkar on the Howrah-Mumbai Duronto express, which was trailing the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto express. Sarkar was requested to collect the briefcase from Nagpur and bring it with him to Mumbai. On Wednesday, Howrah-Mumbai Duronto staff handed over the briefcase to the Wankhedes in the presence of Deshmukh. "It was a great gesture, and because of Indian Railways' staff, a law student could seamlessly get admission," said a joyful Pallavi, adding that the Jhunghares played the role of responsible neighbours.

Thane accident: Trains move at slower speed on Mumbra stretch after mishap claim commuters, CR cites different reason

THANE: Local and mail express trains crossing the Diva end stretch of Mumbra platforms 3 and 4 were moving at a comparatively slower speed than before since Tuesday morning, commuters pointed out. Interestingly, this is a day after railway activists and regular commuters blamed the trains on the fast tracks cruising at high speeds at the sharp curvature at the northern end of Mumbra platforms 3 and 4 for possibly being the cause of the freak Monday mishap where four passengers died and ten others suffered injuries. An initial probe by the railway police had revealed the bags dangling out of the coaches of passengers travelling on the footboard may have brushed against each other, causing the mishap. Mumbra commuter activist Rafique Sheikh said trains were moving at a slower speed at the spot compared to the previous day. The Central Railways, however, claimed a speed restriction was imposed, but it was not due to the Monday incident. 'There was some engineering work going on at a spot 1.5 km away from the spot,' said CR Chief PRO Swapnil Nila. Meanwhile, activists said they alerted the administration about three spots between Diva and Kalwa as potential danger spots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Diva-based activist Ananda Patil said he wrote to the railways three months back, highlighting how trains leaned dangerously to one side while crossing the stretches. 'There are three spots between Diva and Kalwa which pose threats, but to date, there is no corrective action except for a statement by the administration declaring the spot to be as per the standards,' said Patil. Nila also dismissed the possibility and defended that the curvature was as per the norms. Meanwhile, the local staff from Mumbra station who attended to the mishap victims were likely to be called in for questioning. The railway police, guided by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Railways, CSMT, also inspected the spot where the victims were found following the mishap to look for clues. 'We are likely to access the CCTV footage of the spot along with the train pilot and manager of the CSMT and Karjat locals,' informed a police official requesting anonymity.
