Healthy relationships: How to help our kids set and respect boundaries

Every client at Centre Safe is so different in terms of their journeys, as are all our dedicated staff members. What is one thing we all have in common? The answer is a need to set and respect boundaries. When we can learn how to set boundaries for ourselves and boundaries we expect others to follow, that is where real empowerment can come into play. My husband and I have two sons who at some point will become grown individuals making their way in the world. If we don't teach our children about how to set boundaries for themselves and respect the boundaries of others, how can we expect them to be contributing members of society who care about themselves and others? We try to model what boundaries look like and respect the boundaries others set, including our kids. By setting limits and learning how to stick to them, kids develop self-respect and a sense of control over their lives. They also learn how to respect the boundaries of others. Here are simple ways to help your child set boundaries. Boundaries are the limits we set for ourselves and others to feel safe and respected. They help us to know what is and is not acceptable in our relationships. For children, boundaries are especially important because they are still learning about themselves and the world around them. By setting boundaries, parents and caregivers can help kids feel safe and secure, while also teaching them about respect for others. Boundaries also give kids a sense of control over their lives, which can be especially helpful during times of stress or change. When children understand boundaries and feel comfortable enforcing them, they are more likely to grow into happy, healthy adults. Physical boundaries Physical boundaries are the limits we set on physical contact with others. They help us to feel comfortable and safe, and to show respect for other people. Boundaries can be different for each person and can change depending on the situation. For example, you might feel comfortable hugging a friend, but not a stranger. Or you might be OK with someone touching your arm, but not your hair. It's important to listen to our thoughts and feelings when setting boundaries, and to communicate them clearly to others. When we respect our own boundaries, it helps others to do the same. Emotional boundaries Kids need to understand that it's not OK to hurt other people's feelings on purpose. They also need to learn how to cope with their own emotions in a healthy way. Setting emotional boundaries with kids can help them to develop a strong sense of self-esteem and self-awareness. When kids know what their emotional boundaries are, they're more likely to feel comfortable and confident in themselves. Emotional boundaries can be different for every child, but there are some general guidelines that can help you to set them. First, it's important to allow your child to express their emotions freely. This means giving them the space to feel anger, sadness, or any other emotion without judgment or criticism. Second, it's important to respect your child's privacy. This means keeping their confidence and respecting their right to have their own thoughts and feelings. Finally, it's important to encourage healthy communication. This means teaching your child how to express their emotions in a constructive way and listening to them when they need to talk. By setting these emotional boundaries, you can help your child to develop into a well-rounded individual. Centre Safe celebrates 50th anniversary with luncheon at Nittany Lion Inn

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — An organization in Centre County is celebrating 50 years of service to the community. Centre Safe, formerly the Centre County Women's Resource Center, held a luncheon at the Nittany Lion Inn to celebrate the special milestone as well as look into the future. What began in 1975 with a small group of women has grown to have three locations providing services to many in the area. The goal of Centre Safe is safety, equality and respect for all individuals and a community free of relationship and sexual violence. During the luncheon, which was the first since the COVID-19 Pandemic, awards were handed out to many individuals, as well as a ribbon cutting. 'Really, people believing, believing victims and survivors, and believing in the work we do, we always say there's a bubble here in Happy Valley, but there's a lot that happens inside that bubble from all the corners of Centre County. People are affected and people need help, and CentrSafe is here to help,' Executive Director Jennifer Pencek said. During the luncheon, the organization also launched its $2.5 million dollar, 50th anniversary fund. The goal is to raise enough money to complete much-needed projects, but also to fund Centre Safe for another 50 years. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Centre County names April Sexual Assault Awareness Month

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) – April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Centre County, with officials recognizing the need to spread information about the topic. Centre County's commissioners proclaimed April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month throughout the county. They invited Director of Centre Safe, a domestic and sexual violence outreach center, Jennifer Pencek to explain the importance of the proclamation. 'We very much appreciate the support,' Pencek said. Concerns raised over Nittany Mall casino impact study as project moves forward She said that 81% of women and 43% of men have reported experiencing a form of sexual harassment or assault. It is part of the reason Centre Safe is emphasizing its new campaign 'Together We Act, United We Change.' It highlights the importance of everyone in a community standing against assault. Pencek says Centre Safe is supported by local, state and federal grants, but the support from the community is still a big reason why they can continue to offer services. 'We always give tremendous thanks to Centre County, not just officials, but to people who live all over because they're the people who we try to help, but they're also the people that make a difference too,' Pencek added. April is not just Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The commissioners also proclaimed it Child Abuse Prevention Month as well. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
