Watford hope for Chakvetadze return in September
Watford hope Georgia international Giorgi Chakvetadze will finally return to action next month following a frustrating injury lay-off. The Hornets playmaker has not been available since April because of what the club describe as a "complex" bone issue in his foot, the result of "overload and repetitive impacts". Chakvetadze first joined Watford on loan from KAA Gent in the summer of 2023 before making the move permanent and has established himself as one of the best players in the Championship. The club stated the 25-year-old reported early for pre-season training but the injury is in a "slow-healing area". Watford group dynamic will help youngsters - Selvik A statement continued: "A scan in June showed the issue was still present but less severe, so he was phased progressively back into the main group last month and was scheduled to play some part in the friendly win against Deportivo. "However, Chakvetadze reported pain after five sessions and, as a precaution, was re-scanned. "After consultation with industry-leading foot experts, a period of non-impact and work on strength and conditioning only has been advised for six weeks, two of which will be during the first international break." He will have another scan at the end of that period with a view to re-joining the first-team squad if it is all-clear. Chakvetadze has made 78 appearances for Watford - who began the new season with a 1-0 defeat by Charlton Athletic - and has scored three goals. Key Hornets duo near returns
Watford boss Paulo Pezzolano hopes Kwadwo Baah and Giorgi Chakvetadze are nearing a return to action after injury. Baah, 22, came off with a hamstring injury against Preston in January and after missing 10 matches, played a total of just 46 minutes across two games before suffering a recurrence of the injury after starting brightly at Bristol City in April and sat out the final six matches of the campaign. Advertisement He has been given a bespoke fitness programme this summer, joining the main group and doing extra individual sessions and is in line to feature in the pre-season friendly at Leyton Orient on 26 July. Georgian midfielder Chakvetadze, 25, also limped off in the game at Ashton Gate with a foot injury, having played 39 of Watford's first 40 Championship matches. A club statement said he was 'making daily progress' and could feature in the friendly at Brisbane Road or the final warm-up match at home to Deportivo La Coruna four days later. "Both players have been working on their recovery for some time," said Pezzolano. Advertisement "Baah will be able to return to full training with the squad this week, and Chakvetadze is another asset to the club. We look forward to him being fully recovered before he can return to action."

'Chakvetadze among division's best despite lack of goals'
It's that time of the year when divisional teams of the season are named and from Watford, Giorgi Chakvetadze is likely to be the only player in contention for a place in that XI. There have been other solid performers in the Hornets squad, and a few more may have had a chance if they had been playing all season. But Chakvetadze has consistently delivered across the season. He's been a constant threat and the amount of poor games he's had you could probably count on one hand. He is top in the Championship stats for distance carrying by a huge stretch and the same goes for distance progression, both of which he's led from start to finish. Many of these runs have ended with chances (he's second in this particular metric with 73; Middlesbrough's Finn Azaz leads on 77).The stats are very impressive and tell us that with the ball at his feet Chakvetadze is the best in the division at breaking lines and getting into the final Cleverley has compared him to Manchester City's Jack Grealish. I actually think he's a better ball-carrier than Grealish who offers superior technique in many other skill-sets. Grealish's team-mate Savinho is maybe a better comparison. To take himself to the next level, though, Chakvetadze has to add the final piece of the jigsaw - goals and does create a lot of chances and you wonder if he was in a better side with superior forwards would his assists total be higher? That could be argued, but what can't and what he needs to work on, which he and his coaches will know, is the goals column. Two in 38 isn't enough for someone of his undoubted talent. Technique in striking a ball under pressure can be questioned but Cleverley feels it's more about mindset - and that is something they are working on. Chakvetadze, I'm sure, will become a Premier League player but those clubs that are likely to be watching him now will have reservations about these goal stats and they could decide which level of team he plays for at the next level. That said, in an odd season where there haven't been many outstanding attacking players (defenders Maxime Esteve and CJ Egan-Riley plus midfielders Vinicius Souza, Ao Tanaka and Josh Brownhill will be bang in contention for player of the season), Chakvetadze could still make that Championship best XI.
