Luka Modrić makes fresh Champions League history in Madrid Derby
Real Madrid star Luka Modrić has on Wednesday evening secured for himself a fresh piece of football history. This comes owing to the Croatian's appearance in Real's latest outing. Los Blancos are of course currently locked in action, in the 2nd leg of a Champions League Last-16 showdown with city rivals Atlético. After shining off the bench in the tie's opener at the Santiago last week, the aforementioned Modrić was rewarded by way of a return to starting duties this evening, pushing Eduardo Camavinga into a substitute role. And, as a result of as much, the former Tottenham Hotspur man has etched his name yet further into the history books of European football. Vinícius Jr. targeted with racist chants from Atlético fans
Real Madrid star Vinícius Jr. was tonight on the receiving end of racial abuse on the part of sections of Atlético supporters. The latest edition of the Madrid Derby is of course currently being contested. In the 2nd leg of a Champions League Last-16 tie between the city rivals, Diego Simeone's Atlético have welcomed Real to the Wanda Metropolitano for a highly-anticipated clash. And, as things stand, it is the evening's hosts who boast the advantage, owing to a Conor Gallagher strike inside the opening 60 seconds. As alluded to above, though, ahead of kick-off in the derby, it was matters away from the pitch which grabbed the headlines. And, unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons. This comes after Real Madrid standout Vinícius Jr. was the target of digusting racist abuse from a group of Atlético fans. The individuals in question, as showcased in the footage below, came together outside the Metropolitano to belt out chants of: 'Ale, ale, ale, Vinicius chimpanzee!' ‘For the ones who know football' – Lamine Yamal sends message to Barcelona teammate after Benfica
Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has sent a message of appreciation the way of teammate Dani Olmo, on the back of the club's latest outing. Both Lamine and Olmo of course featured from the off on Tuesday night, as Barcelona welcomed Benfica to Catalunya's capital for a Champions League Last-16 clash. When all was said and done, the Blaugrana emerged on the right side of a 3-1 result, to book their spot in the competition's quarter-finals by way of a 4-1 aggregate triumph. And whilst it was the likes of Raphinha and Lamine who took the headlines post-match owing to respective standout performances, the latter was quick to highlight the efforts of another member of Hansi Flick's squad as being of a top level, too. Official: Barcelona announce squad to face Benfica
The squad of players called up by La Liga giants Barcelona for the club's upcoming meeting with Benfica has on Tuesday been unveiled online. Barcelona, of course, are primed to return to action later this evening. Turning attentions back towards matters on the continent, the Blaugrana will welcome the aforementioned Benfica to Catalunya's capital, for a Champions League Last-16 2nd-leg clash. Hansi Flick's troops boast a narrow advantage heading into the fixture, owing to a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Portugal last week. With qualification for the quarter-finals far from secured, though, Flick and his coaching staff have nevertheless opted to call upon a strong group of players. The only absentees of note come in the form of long-term sidelined pair Marc-André ter Stegen and Marc Bernal, along with Andreas Christensen. The rarely seen Ansu Fati, on the other hand, is called up. Key Benfica star ruled out of Barcelona clash through injury
La Liga giants Barcelona will not be forced to contend with the efforts of a leading member of the attacking ranks at Benfica, in the upcoming meeting between the sides. This comes amid confirmation that Ángel Di Maria has been ruled out of the matchup through injury. Barca and Benfica are of course primed to lock horns on the continent on Wednesday night. In the first of two Champions League Last-16 fixtures, the latter will act as hosts, in welcoming Hansi Flick's La Liga table-toppers to Lisbon for a highly-anticipated showdown.
