More than 350 people killed in road accidents annually in Chittoor district: SP

Superintendent of Police (SP) V.N. Manikanta Chandolu on Thursday launched a 'Helmet Awareness Song' at the Gandhi Bomma Junction to promote mandatory wearing of helmets for two-wheeler riders and drastically prevent road accidents. After the song launch, the SP flagged off a bike rally, split into three groups, which covered the vital junctions of Murakambattu, Reddygunta and Sambayya Kandriga. Addressing a gathering of police personnel and the public, the SP stressed the need for intensifying such campaigns. Mr. Chandolu said that more than 350 people were killed in road accidents annually in Chittoor district. A majority of the accidents involved two-wheeler riders. In addition to the casualties, nearly 500 individuals were prone to critical injuries. 'When a person dies in a road accident, he is not the only sufferer, but his entire family will be subjected to loss,' the SP said. Referring to the road accidents involving two-wheelers and driving without seatbelts countrywide, the SP said that the figure was over 1.6 lakh annually, though many incidents could have been avoided by wearing helmets. The awareness song, which the police department had specially arranged for the youth and students, would be extensively played during the campaigns all over the district, and during the seminars and meetings in educational institutions. Banners will also be displayed at the accident-prone zones. The SP congratulated the Traffic Inspector (Chittoor Division) Nithya Babu for enforcing strict measures to curb road accidents. Senior police officers from the sub-divisions of Chittoor, Palamaner, Kuppam and Nagari took part in the event.
