More than 350 people killed in road accidents annually in Chittoor district: SP

The Hindu24-04-2025
Superintendent of Police (SP) V.N. Manikanta Chandolu on Thursday launched a 'Helmet Awareness Song' at the Gandhi Bomma Junction to promote mandatory wearing of helmets for two-wheeler riders and drastically prevent road accidents.
After the song launch, the SP flagged off a bike rally, split into three groups, which covered the vital junctions of Murakambattu, Reddygunta and Sambayya Kandriga.
Addressing a gathering of police personnel and the public, the SP stressed the need for intensifying such campaigns. Mr. Chandolu said that more than 350 people were killed in road accidents annually in Chittoor district. A majority of the accidents involved two-wheeler riders. In addition to the casualties, nearly 500 individuals were prone to critical injuries. 'When a person dies in a road accident, he is not the only sufferer, but his entire family will be subjected to loss,' the SP said.
Referring to the road accidents involving two-wheelers and driving without seatbelts countrywide, the SP said that the figure was over 1.6 lakh annually, though many incidents could have been avoided by wearing helmets.
The awareness song, which the police department had specially arranged for the youth and students, would be extensively played during the campaigns all over the district, and during the seminars and meetings in educational institutions. Banners will also be displayed at the accident-prone zones.
The SP congratulated the Traffic Inspector (Chittoor Division) Nithya Babu for enforcing strict measures to curb road accidents. Senior police officers from the sub-divisions of Chittoor, Palamaner, Kuppam and Nagari took part in the event.

Five cops injured in Ujjain after Muharram procession participants use horse to ram into barricades on prohibited route

Five policemen were injured in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Sunday when participants of the Muharram procession rammed the ceremonial horse into barricades to enter a prohibited route. An official said that a lathi charge was carried out to bring the situation under control near Khajurwadi Masjid under Jiwajiganj police station limits after some of those taking part in the procession clashed with police. 'The route had been finalised in advance, and organisers of the procession were clearly instructed not to take horses through prohibited paths. Despite this, those in the procession tried to force their way after getting the horse to ram into the barricades,' Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma said. 'We had to resort to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. They fled, leaving the horse behind,' he added. Jiwajiganj Station House Officer Vivek Kanodia said the following policemen were injured in the incident and received first aid at the district hospital: Assistant sub-inspector Khuman Singh Kelwa Head Constable Mukesh Munia Head Constable Anil Sisodia Head Constable Chandrapal Constable Shyam Singh SHO Kanodia said that the horse used to topple the barricade belongs to one Irfan alias Lalla from Begum Bagh. 'Sixteen persons, including the organiser, were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing public servants from discharging their duty.' Meanwhile, communal tension flared in Jattari town, about 40 km from Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh, on Sunday following reports that unidentified persons desecrated the tomb of a revered Sufi saint located at a graveyard in the town's main market area. As news of the incident spread, a crowd began to gather near the shrine of Hafiz Allah Mehar Shah, prompting senior police officials to rush to the scene and calm the situation. Authorities assured the public that the damage to the tomb and the surrounding metal railing would be repaired immediately and that CCTV cameras would be installed at the shrine complex to prevent future incidents.

Dharmasthala police book web reporter for fake news

The Dharmasthala police have suo motu registered a case against Sudharshan Byalalu, a reporter of Kannada online news portal Hosakannada, for allegedly publishing fake news regarding the recent visit of an advocates' team to the office of Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police K. Arun regarding the case of a person claiming to have been forced to bury many bodies of murder and rape victims within the Dharmasthala village jurisdiction a decade ago. The police stated that Mr. Byalalu's report regarding Mr. Arun's absence from his office when the advocates visited on June 27 contained false information and was also presented in an alarming way. The police said that when they inquired, Mr. Byalalu told them that he did not have any information about whether the team of advocates had a prior appointment with the SP. The reporter was also not aware of the reason why the SP was not in his office on June 27, the police added. As it was evident that Mr. Byalalu had reported a false story, the Dharmasthala police registered a case against him for offences punishable under Sections 352 and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Meanwhile, the Dhamasthala police on July 4 took permission from the court and registered a case after a person, who claimed to have buried bodies of several victims of rape and murder a decade ago, submitted a complaint to the SP on July 3. The complaint was registered under Section 211(a) (omission to give notice or information to a public servant by a person legally bound to give it) of the BNS. The police stated that the complainant had submitted two colour photocopies of the pictures of the skeleton and body parts, specifically informing them that he would produce the samples of the skeleton and body parts in court later.

Serial Killer On The Run For 24 Years Arrested. He Targeted Cab Drivers

New Delhi: A serial killer who targeted cab drivers and sold off their vehicles has landed in the police net after 24 years. The Delhi Police crime branch has arrested Ajay Lamba, who was wanted in four murder-cum-robbery cases. He was on the run for over two decades. Lamba and his accomplices would hire taxis and travel to Uttarakhand. They would then sedate the driver, choke him to death and dispose of the body in the hills. The cab would be smuggled across the border and sold in Nepal. "The accused, a notorious robber-cum-murderer, was involved in four brutal robbery-cum-murder cases targeting cab drivers across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during the year 2001. He would hire taxis with accomplices, murder the drivers, rob the vehicles, and dispose of the bodies in remote mountainous regions to avoid detection," Aditya Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said in a statement. Police suspect that Ajay Lamba and his gang members could be involved in more killings. Of the four victims, only one cab driver's body was recovered. Two of Lamba's gang members were arrested earlier. Police are now questioning him. Lamba, 48, is from Delhi and dropped out of school in Class 6. He later moved to Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and tied up with Dhirendra and Dilip Negi for the chilling murders of cab drivers. Lamba has several other cases against him, ranging from theft to illegal possession of arms, police have said. Police have said that a Crime Branch team had been tracking Lamba through manual and technical surveillance. Police have said he lived in Nepal from 2008 to 2018 and later shifted to Dehradun with his family. "In 2020, he allegedly became involved in the ganja supply chain from Odisha to other parts of India, including Delhi. He was recently arrested in a case registered under NDPS Act in 2021 in PS Sagarpur, Delhi and again in a jewellery shop dacoity case in Behrampur, Odisha in 2024. He was on bail in these cases. He never disclosed his involvement (in the 2001 murders) and absconding status to anyone," the police statement said.
