Game 2 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional proved to be plenty more exciting than Friday's opener, with both UNC and Arizona combining for 18 runs.
The only issue: despite holding a late lead, North Carolina's usually-stellar pitching faltered. Arizona, acting as the home team for Game 2, turned a 2-run deficit into a 10-8 victory and kept its season alive.
Facing a 6-4 deficit entering the seventh inning, the Diamond Heels pushed across four runs to take an 8-6 lead. Right fielder Tyson Bass started the scoring party with a 2-strike, 2-out, 3-run home run to left field, then Jackson Van De Brake drew a bases-loaded walk.
Walker McDuffie, UNC's typically-reliable freshman closer, allowed four runs and took the loss Saturday afternoon. Wildcats (43-19) right fielder Brendan Summerhill started his team's rally, doubling into left field and closing North Carolina's lead to 8-7. Easton Breyfogle tied the game on a wild pitch, then Maddox Mihalakis mashed a 2-run single and gave Arizona the lead for good.
The Diamond Heels will need more from their hitters on Sunday, particularly the top of their lineup. 1-5 hitters Kane Kepley, Van De Brake, Luke Stevenson, Gavin Gallaher and Hunter Stokely hit a combined 3-for-19, though Van De Brake walked four times. If Alex Madera, Bass, Sam Angelo (2-for-5) and Carter French (4-hit afternoon) can also deliver strong afternoons at the plate, celebration will ensue at Boshamer Stadium.

Given how he pitched during the Chapel Hill Regional winner-take-all game against Oklahoma, I'm willing to bet Ryan Lynch starts for the Diamond Heels on Sunday. Lynch, combined with whoever North Carolina head coach Scott Forbes puts on the mound, cannot allow 10 runs to a hot Arizona squad.
Despite UNC scoring eight runs on Saturday, hitters like Stevenson and Stokely need to come alive again. The Wildcats are getting contributions from virtually everyone in their lineup.
North Carolina plays well enough to win Sunday, but hitting woes persist atop the lineup. Arizona escapes Boshamer Stadium and advances to the College World Series.
