Flight returns to runway at Charleston International Airport after mechanical issue

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — A plane that departed Charleston International Airport Sunday had to return to the runway after experiencing a mechanical issue, airport officials confirmed. American Airlines flight 2144, departing for Miami, Florida, returned to CHS shortly after its initial departure. Airline officials said the flight landed safely and returned to the gate under its own power. After returning, the plane was taken out of service to be inspected. 'Our team is working hard to get customers on their way to their final destination,' American Airlines said. 'We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans, and we apologize for the inconvenience.' The aircraft was an Airbus A319 carrying 127 passengers and five crew members. Celebrity chef Kardea Brown has grand-opening celebration for first restaurant

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)—Food Network star and beloved Charleston Chef Kardea Brown has officially opened her first restaurant, which is located in Charleston International Airport. Kardea Brown's Southern Kitchen, backed by hospitality company Delaware North, is now bringing the flavors of Gullah Geechee culture to travelers passing through the airport. Brown grew up on Wadmalaw Island among the Gullah community, learning how to cook from her single mother and grandmother. In her mother's kitchen, she honed her culinary talent, which has propelled her to success. 'There's a reason and there's a story behind every single item on this menu and so to be standing here in front of you all today at this grand opening of a restaurant that I've seen in my vision as a young child it's surreal,' she said at Thursday's ribbon cutting. The southern kitchen menu features a mix of Gullah and Lowcountry cuisine, such as the fried 'fush' plate, Lowcountry-style deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, Brown's famous mac and cheese, and more. 'At one point in life, I was selling pimento cheese out of the trunk of my car. There was a point in my life where I was homeless,' she recalled with tears in her eyes. 'So, to be here in front of you all with a restaurant in my namesake with my grandmother, my grand aunt, my father, and my family, everyone's here. It just it means the world to me.' In addition to her recent entrepreneurial endeavor, Brown hosts the Food Network show 'Delicious Miss Brown,' co-hosts 'Kids Baking Championship,' and is the author of a New York Times bestseller. The interior of Brown's southern kitchen is meant to reflect Charleston charm with bold colors and cultural pieces spotlighted. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. American Airlines expanding service between Charleston and New York City

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) — Travelers flying through Charleston International Airport will soon have more options to get to New York City. American Airlines will begin operating twice-daily service to New York's LaGuardia Airport on September 3, with plans to expand its service to three daily flights starting November 3. The route will use a combination of Embraer E170 and E175 aircraft, regional jets that can seat between 76 and 88 passengers, depending on the configuration. Charleston International Airport CEO Elliot Summey called the announcement a 'major win' for the city and the region as a whole. 'More flights to New York mean more options for our business and leisure travelers, and more connections for our local economy,' he said. 'We're thrilled to see American Airlines grow their commitment to Charleston and further solidify our airport's role as a vital transportation hub in the Southeast.' American Airlines is Charleston's largest carrier, operating 25 departures daily to seven destinations. 'Whether traveling to New York City for a trip or through one of our other gateways to more than 350 destinations around the world, we look forward to welcoming travelers on board our aircraft,' said Jordan Pack, the airline's director of domestic network planning. Tickets for the future service will be available starting May 5. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Plane at Reagan Airport carrying lawmakers bumps wings with another plane

Washington — Several members of Congress were on a plane that was sitting on the tarmac waiting to leave Washington on Thursday when it was clipped by another aircraft. American Airlines said no injuries were reported, and both aircraft returned to the gates at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The wingtip of a plane bound for Charleston International Airport in South Carolina struck another plane that was headed to JFK International Airport in New York, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the incident. Several House lawmakers posted about the incident, which occurred as members of Congress were leaving for a two-week recess after adopting a budget resolution that opens the door to implementing President Trump's agenda. "While waiting to take off on the runway at DCA just now, another plane struck our wing. Thankfully, everyone is safe," Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey said on X. Rep. Nick LaLota, a New York Republican, said his Democratic colleague Rep. Grace Meng of New York, was handing out grapes to other passengers. "Glad my colleagues and I are okay! We are safely waiting on the tarmac, but we may need more snacks," Meng wrote .
