Female prison officer faces jail after 'inappropriate' relationships with inmates and sneaking in mobile phone
A female prison officer faces jail after admitting inappropriate relationships with inmates - including a violent thug jailed for his role in a 'sickening' brawl. Charlotte Winstanley, 27, was working at HMP Lindholme, near Doncaster, when she struck up improper relationships and smuggled banned items inside. Winstanley appeared before Doncaster Magistrates' Court where she indicated guilty pleas to a charge of misconduct in a public office between August 1 and November 17, 2022. The charge stated she 'misconducted' herself by 'entering into inappropriate relationships with inmates and conveyed contraband for inmates'. Winstanley also admitted conspiring with one of the inmates at the category C prison to sneak in mobile phone SD cards in October 2022. That prisoner was named in court papers as Jabhari Blair, 29, who was jailed for more than 12 years in 2014 for his role in a violent mass brawl in Bradford, West Yorks, in which people were stabbed, kicked, punched and stamped on. Winstanley, of Stainforth, South Yorks, also indicated guilty pleas to bringing a mobile phone into HMP Lindholme and also taking a photograph inside HMP Ranby, in Retford, Notts, in April 2023. The case was sent to Sheffield Crown Court where Winstanley will appear next month for a plea and trial preparation hearing. Ordering a pre-sentence report, district judge Leo Pyle told her: 'I have to send all of the allegations against you to the Sheffield Crown Court for what is called a plea and trial preparation hearing. 'Given the indication you ultimately will be pleaded guilty. When the indictment is put to you in relation to all the charges, I am going to order that the probation service prepare a report about you. 'It is very important that the judge comes to pass sentence there is as much information about you as possible.' Blair, now incarcerated at HMP Lowdham Grange, near Nottingham, also appeared before Doncaster magistrates' court by video-link. He indicated no pleas to charges of illicitly possessing an iPhone and USB stick while at HMP Lindholme, and conspiring with Winstanley to convey SD cards into the prison. Blair, formerly of Rookwood Vale, Leeds, is due for parole in December. He was aged 18 when he stabbed a man during a mass brawl described by the sentencing judge as 'disgusting and sickening' public disorder. After being remanded into custody by Judge Pyle, the serving prisoner replied: 'No worries. Enjoy your day, yeah?' The former prison officer also indicated guilty pleas to bringing a mobile phone into HMP Lindholme (pictured) and also taking a photograph inside HMP Ranby, in Retford, Notts, in April 2023 Both Winstanley and Blair will appear at Sheffield Crown Court on September 11. At least 30 female prison guard have been given the sack in the past three years for forming improper relationships with prisoners. That compares to just nine women who lost their jobs for the same offence between 2017 and 2019. Morgan Farr Varney, 24, was jailed in May for ten months over an illicit relationship with a prisoner at HMP Lindholme. She was caught slipping into a cupboard with Jordan Stones, 30, a crack cocaine dealer serving a five-a-half year sentence. Interviewed by police, Farr Varney, also from Stainforth, admitted she had 'proper fallen in love' with him and admitted she had 'f****ed her life up'. Stones was handed an extra six weeks' jail time after being caught with an illicit mobile phone to stay in touch with the shamed guard.
