Carmarthenshire university graduate wins top award

Andrea Dick, a BA (Hons) Sports Coaching graduate from Solent University who lives in Carmarthenshire, was awarded the CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) Prize for Sport Coaching during the university's Department of Sport and Health graduation ceremony on July 11. Ms Dick was recognised for her commitment to professional practice, completion of CIMSPA modules, and significant contributions to the community throughout her studies. Adam Lewis, course leader in sport coaching at Solent University, said: "Andrea has found her calling coaching sport to children, representing the CIMSPA professional standards, and is a worthy winner. "I am proud of her, and all the graduating students this year. "Our practice-led ethos for the course means we expect and support all students to gain real-world experience, positively contributing to the community through sport coaching. "Our four shortlisted students have all achieved so much, and we were delighted to have such a difficult time deciding on a winner." Ms Dick completed more than 250 hours of volunteer work, including supporting the Saints Foundation, delivering sports activities in primary schools, and assisting with PE lessons. She said: "With continued support from all the staff at Solent, I have gained so much practical and hands-on experience, which has prepared me for the next step in my career. "My aim is to combine the skills and knowledge I've gained from both my degree and teacher training to promote physical education and wellbeing in schools, while continuing to stay connected to the wider sport and coaching industry." She is now set to begin a PGCE in primary school teaching. Other shortlisted nominees also made significant contributions in the Southampton community. Nathan Hamerton supported more than 200 sessions with Learning Through Sport, while Martin Rogers Kafuuma Wasswa Kazibwe coached at Planet Education. Ed Cameron gained experience at the National Tennis Centre and with the Women's Army football team.

Olympic medallist returns to Oxford Brookes University to speak about career

An Olympic medallist and former Oxford Brookes student has returned to the university to share how he has achieved a successful career. Dan Bigham, who won a silver medal in the track cycling team pursuit event at the Paris 2024 Games, spoke at The Inside Track, the university's annual employability event for sport and coaching sciences. It was held on March 3 at the Headington campus and was attended by students, alumni, industry professionals, and university staff. Mr Bigham, who is also an aerodynamicist and performance engineer, shared his journey from student to elite athlete and engineer. He said: "Your career isn't something that happens to you - it's something that you design. "To engineer your own success, say yes to uncomfortable opportunities, develop skills beyond your core discipline, actively seek feedback, and build your network strategically." The event also featured Andy McGill, higher technical education manager at the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity. Mr McGill highlighted the importance of professional status and recognition in the industry and discussed the evolving career pathways in sport and physical activity. The event provided a platform for discussions between students and industry professionals, with attendees exploring opportunities for placements, internships, and graduate roles. A networking session allowed students to connect with experts, seek advice, and take steps toward their careers.
