NFL running back returning from a broken neck is ruthlessly cut by his team

Despite just recently coming back to training camp after fully recovering from a neck injury that ended his previous season, one running back found himself on the chopping block. The Cincinnati Bengals have cut running back Zack Moss on Wednesday, according to an announcement from the team. Moss, 27, was previously on the non-football injury list pertaining to a neck injury that cut his season short in 2024. Last season, Moss signed a two-year contract worth $8million. He then re-structured his deal for a contract worth $1.7m in 2025. Cutting him leads to the Bengals eating a $1.88m dead cap penalty, but will net Cincinnati $1.2m in cap savings. Moss' return from injury coincided with an already-packed running back room at Paycor Stadium. Moss didn't get surgery on his neck and healed naturally. He'll now be looking for a new team. Moss' absence led to the rise of Chase Brown, a 2024 draft pick, as one of the best young running backs in the NFL. Add to that the selection of Texas Tech rusher Tahj Brooks in the sixth round of this year's draft and the re-signing of Samaje Perine, and the Bengals seemed chock full of running back options. According to The Athletic, Moss discussed retirement with Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. However, with three young children, Moss hoped to earn more NFL money before eventually calling it quits. The 27-year-old began losing feeling in his arm in Week 8 last season before CT scans unveiled that he'd broken his neck in three places on his C6 vertebrae. Moss opted to not undergo surgery, instead confining himself to bedrest and minimal head movement. Now, he'll have to hope for a new team to take the risk of picking him up as he'll hope to improve his conditioning for 2025.

Chase Brown seized the No. 1 running back role for Cincinnati last season, racking up 1,350 yards from scrimmage with 11 touchdowns in 16 games (10 starts). A third-round pick by Buffalo in 2020, Moss has rushed for 2,318 yards and 16 touchdowns and caught 98 passes for 710 yards and five TDs in 61 career games (17 starts) with the Bills (2020-22), Indianapolis Colts (2022-23) and Bengals. Fantasy Football: Bengals RB Chase Brown could provide Round 1 value

At the beginning of last season, the Cincinnati Bengals had RB Zack Moss atop the depth chart. As a result, he was a trendy sleeper pick in fantasy football. But as the season progressed and Moss struggled with consistency and injuries, it didn't take long for Chase Brown to engrain himself as the RB1 for the Bengals. It was in Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers that Brown broke out, rushing for 80 yards on 15 carries and two TDs while adding two receptions for 12 yards. Brown would run away with the starting role and become fantasy football gold, helping managers win championships. He would finish 2024 as the RB11 overall in fantasy, rushing for 990 yards and seven TDs with 54 receptions and an additional 360 yards and four receiving TDs. Yahoo fantasy football analysts Matt Harmon and Justin Boone discussed Brown's current position in drafts going into 2025, currently going on average around pick 28. With an ADP in the early third round, both Harmon and Boone agree that Brown's going way too low in drafts. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Boone isn't concerned about the defensive side of things with Cincinnati trying to get guys signed. He believes the team can be better and that Brown can handle a big workload again, similar to what he did most of last season, consistently getting around 15-25 touches every week. Boone also notes the lack of competition for touches in the backfield from Moss and rookie RB Tahj Brooks. If everything works out for the Bengals and Brown remains healthy, he could provide Round 1 value to fantasy managers who are lucky enough to snag him in the late-second or early-third rounds in drafts.

Is Chase Brown a 'must draft' fantasy first rounder?

Yahoo Sports fantasy analysts Matt Harmon and Justin Boone discuss the Bengals running back's performance last season and why he could be a sneaky first round value who is going much later in early drafts. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Chase Brown here in the 3rd round. This is a guy that I'm targeting basically in every draft. Last year from week 4 on, he was a top 7 fantasy back and top 7 fantasy points per game in half PPR leagues. I don't see any reason why he can't do that again. Hopefully, the Bengals can get the contract situation sorted out with some of those defensive guys that are unhappy. Let's get those guys in there. I think this team could be better. I think he could get more scoring opportunity. I'm not that worried there about any of the other options in that backfield. Zach Moss coming back from injury, Taj Brooks, the rookie. I think they're just going to be complimentary pieces. I don't think they're coming for the top role by any means. And Chase Brown proved last year he can handle big workloads and he could put up good fantasy points. I think this guy might be like a round one value that people are getting in the 3rd round right now. I highly recommend everybody should be out there trying to get him. I think that, uh, Chase Brown is where the tear drops off to like another group at running back, cause I kind of hesitated between, I took Lamar Jackson at the top of the 3rd round, and Brown was maybe like my last tier of running backs where I do think there's a drop off to the Kenneth Walker, Bruce Hall, Kron Williams, like that James Cook, that group of guys. That was where running backs sort of dropped off to me, and I really will come back to elite quarterbacks cause I decided to go with Lamar Jackson there instead of Chase Brown, but I do think that's kind of the guy, the last one I see in this group of like, all right, like locked in running back one status. Cincinnati Bengals rookie RB gets compared to NFL Hall Of Famer

The Cincinnati Bengals added to their backfield this offseason by selecting Tahj Brooks out of Texas Tech in the sixth round of this year's draft. Brooks, who totaled 1,704 scrimmage yards last season and a career-high 18 touchdowns from scrimmage. Brooks joins a running back room that is led by third-year back Chase Brown who had a breakout season in 2024, along with veterans Zack Moss and Samaje Perine, who is in his third stint with Cincinnati. With three experienced backs ahead of him, it may be tough for Brooks to get playing time in his rookie season, but he's got plenty of potential to breakthrough. Advertisement Brooks' college coach at Texas Tech, Joey McGuire, gave his former Red Raider running back high praise, saying the Bengals rookie reminds him of NFL Hall Of Famer and Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl champion, Emmitt Smith. "His ability to make people miss, his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield… He really reminds me of Emmitt Smith." ( It would be quite the find for Cincinnati if Brooks shows any resemblance of Smith, who three Super Bowls, one Super Bowl MVP, and one NFL MVP while gaining the most rushing yards in NFL history in his career with 18,355 yards. Brooks will have to climb the depth chart to earn an opportunity to showcase his skillset, but his former coach sees plenty of tatlent and potential in him.
