New Jersey filmmakers putting a modern spin on old-school martial arts movies
New Jersey filmmaking duo's take on martial arts movies a blend of tradition and innovation New Jersey filmmaking duo's take on martial arts movies a blend of tradition and innovation New Jersey filmmaking duo's take on martial arts movies a blend of tradition and innovation In Cherry Hill, New Jersey, a filmmaking duo is taking a fresh look at old-school martial arts classics and proving you don't have to be in Hollywood to chase your dreams. Joey Min is the founder of Art School Dropouts, a short film production company that's quietly built a cult following on YouTube for the past decade. Alongside his creative partner Stephanie Pham, the two have blended their real-life martial arts backgrounds with a deep love for action cinema. "The old school '80s, '90s action Hong Kong action films with Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Samwell Hung – just to kind of be reminded that martial arts can be fun," said Pham, who's been practicing Taekwondo since she was 7. Their films are equal parts tribute and innovation, respecting the traditions of martial arts while infusing modern storytelling, gaming aesthetics, and humor. "What we were instilled in with martial arts and the movies that we watched growing up, I think it's the love that keeps it going," said Min. Their latest project, Player Agency, is a virtual reality-inspired action film that unfolds like a video game. With dynamic fight scenes, clever edits, and a hint of retro nostalgia, it's their most ambitious project yet. "In this world, we kind of focus on the realism of everything," said Min. "Sometimes that slapstick... let's you enjoy the action for what it is," said Min. For the last 10 years, Art School Dropouts has quietly produced dozens of short films, earning collaborations with big names, including action legend Michael Jai White, while maintaining complete creative control over their work. Their story is one of perseverance, creativity, and staying true to your voice, whether you're filming in a studio or a South Jersey backyard.

Baltimore city pools reopen with new schedule and operating hours
Six Baltimore City park pools will open on weekends only beginning Saturday, May 24, 2025, with new operating hours and a weekly closure schedule for maintenance. The pools opening Saturday include Druid Hill, Lake Clifton, Riverside, Patterson, Roosevelt, and Cherry Hill. They will operate on weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. During the season, park pools will close one day per week to allow for maintenance. Druid Hill, Lake Clifton and Riverside will close on Mondays, while Patterson, Roosevelt, and Cherry Hill will close on Tuesdays. Full operating hours for both neighborhood and park pools begin June 17, 2025. Neighborhood pools will operate Monday through Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Park pools will expand their schedule starting June 17, operating Monday through Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Weekend hours remain 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Baltimore city upgrades community pools Throughout 2024, the city made upgrades to multiple community pools. Patterson Park Pool reopened in May 2024 after being closed the previous summer for extensive renovations. The closure angered community members due to the sweltering heat in August 2023. The pool now features a brand-new mechanical system, piping, plumbing, drains, and pool liner. The mechanical room was also upgraded to prevent flooding. The Patterson Park reopening marked the first time in several years that all six park pools opened on schedule. Why the focus on maintenance? The city's Department of Recreation and Parks has prioritized extensive renovations and repairs to address aging infrastructure. Most city pools are over 50 years old. The department said that safety, not funding, was the main concern driving the upgrades and closures in 2023. Previous years saw community frustration over pool closures, prompting the city to develop a comprehensive plan to address pool needs citywide.

Bahama Breeze restaurant in the Cherry Hill Mall now the only one of the chain left in NJ
And then there was one. The Bahama Breeze chain has closed four restaurants across New Jersey, retaining just one eatery in the state at Cherry Hill Mall. The shutdowns affected island-themed restaurants in Toms River, Wayne, Woodbridge and Paramus, according to a notice filed with the state Department of Labor. The chain cut 325 jobs in the process. Mall news: The Bistro at Cherry Hill faces financial challenge at Cherry Hill Mall Bahama Breeze, which reported having 43 restaurants earlier this year, closed 15 locations overall. "We continually evaluate the performance of all our restaurants," said Kiara Buckner, a representative of the Darden restaurant group, which operates Bahama Breeze. "Closing a restaurant is a difficult choice because it impacts our team members and guests," she said. "However, we believe this is the right decision because it will allow Bahama Breeze to focus on its highest performing restaurants and strengthen the brand's overall performance." Darden has three other restaurants at the Cherry Hill Mall — Seasons 52, Eddie V's and The Capital Grille. The group also oversees the Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse and Yard House chains, among others. Jim Walsh is a senior reporter with the Courier-Post, Burlington County Times and The Daily Journal.
