REVIEW: The hidden waterside café on popular nature reserve

With summer around the corner, what better time to review my go-to lunch place, situated within a tranquil beauty spot. The Hide Coffee House is nestled along the waterside of Pennington Flash nature reserve is one of my favourites in the area and it's not difficult to see why. The Hide Coffee House opened in 2023 (Image: Leah Collins) The coffee house, which is a council-run venture, opened in 2023 as part of a £2.7 million makeover of facilities at the nature reserve, with accessible toilets installed along with upgrades to parking, including electric vehicle charging points. It's also dog-friendly, making it perfect for those out walking their pooch to pop in for a sit-down. As someone who lives for a sweet treat, The Hide Coffee House is a haven of delicious choices. The wildlife-themed venture combines a menu using local suppliers, which imbues it with an authentic feel. This is one of my favourite places to visit and I often opt to read a book by the water, with a sweet coffee in hand. The Hide Coffee House is surrounded by beautiful views of Pennington Flash. (Image: Leah Collins) The extensive food menu includes a range of breakfast barms, which include vegan options, a soup of the day, bagels, sourdough toast, pastries, pancakes, waffles and paninis. The coffee house is popular, especially with the weather warming up. (Image: Leah Collins) There's also Cheshire Farm ice cream, which is particularly popular in the warmer months. On my latest visit I was delighted at the options for cakes, cookies, brownies and pies. From a quick glance at the front counter, these included Victoria cronuts, rocky road, berry and yoghurt flapjacks, double chocolate fudge cake, apple and blackcurrant crumble jack and my own personal favourite, Biscoff millionaire slices. There were lots of options for sweet lovers. (Image: Leah Collins)READ MORE: Drinks-wise, there are numerous hot and cold options that cater to all age groups. The Mini Egg Easter hot chocolate did stand out to me, as well as the Baileys hot chocolate. There was an array of freshly made smoothies, milkshakes and of course, iced coffee flavours. The cafe offered seemingly endless sweat treats! (Image: Leah Collins) In the end, I opted for a lotus millionaire slice and a green smoothie in a bid to remain somewhat healthy. I was not disappointed, although I will say that the Biscoff slice was one for the ultra-sweet-tooths, so those who don't like too much sugar might be more suited to some of the other (endless!) options. The lotus millionaire slice was delightful. (Image: Leah Collins) As the weather is warming up, I would definitely recommend a visit to the Flash if you haven't already. It makes for a lovely family day out, a popular hangout with friends or even if you just want to amble there alone to relax, as I do. With Pennington Flash formally declared a National Nature Reserve in October 2022, James Winterbottom said that this has been a "key catalyst" for the council to push ahead with developments that will attract people to the Flash while preserving its natural beauty. The Hide Coffee House is open 9am to 4pm from November to March, and 9am to 7pm from April to October.

The ‘country house' pub in Greater Manchester with a beautiful beer garden

For over a week now Greater Manchester and many parts of the UK have basked in glorious spring weather. The sun hasn't stopped shining, there's hardly been a cloud in the sky and it's even been hotter than Spain. Although this weekend it looks like that could all change as the weather takes a turn, with temperatures returning to average for this time of year. It's likely the sun will disappear behind the clouds once more with forecasters even predicting showers for next week. READ MORE: It was a restaurant like no other, now a Manchester legend has been reborn READ MORE: The sunny Greater Manchester walk with a waterfall and hidden beer garden But there's still a time to make the most of the beautiful weather which should last until Sunday. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Worsley Old Hall (@worsleyoldhall) Since it's Friday there's not better way to do that than with a cold drink in a beer garden. We've got plenty to choose from, including canal-side pubs and city-centre sun traps. Yet tucked away in Worsley in Salford is a pub that's rather special, with a stunning beer garden. Worsley Old Hall is a self-described 'country house' pub, with gorgeous black and white timbering. Only a stone's throw away from RHS Bridgewater, this grade-II listed building has a cosy interior with nooks and crannies where you can enjoy a drink (or several). Yet when the sun's shining the huge garden at the back of the pub comes into its own. It's beautifully designed with generous seating options, and really does feel like a country house despite the fact it's minutes away from the M60. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Worsley Old Hall (@worsleyoldhall) It's a lovely spot to sit and enjoy a drink after work as the sun sets with views across the golf course. Or head there on a weekend after exploring nearby Worsley village or RHS Bridgewater. The pub has an excellent drinks selection, as well as a mouthwatering menu with light bites and hearty mains. Deserts include Cheshire Farm ice cream and an impressive range of local cheeses. The building itself dates from the 16th or early 17th century and was originally a timber-framed building, which has been rebuilt in brick. The house was remodelled in the 18th century. The hall has significant importance to Greater Manchester as it was here that It was in the hall that Francis Egerton, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, James Brindley and John Gilbert planned the Bridgewater Canal and supervised its building. Urgent recall warning for popular Biscoff-flavoured ice cream

Two popular ice creams are being recalled over fears they contain ingredients that are not listed on the label, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Cheshire Farm is recalling batches of its Caramelized Biscuit Ice Cream and Biscoff Ice Cream because they contain hazelnuts. The FSA, which published the alert, said the products are a 'possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to nuts.' The recall only impacts its one litre tubs and three different batch codes. One of these included the Caramelized Biscuit Ice Cream Pack with the code L24150, best before 29 November 2025. The other recall accounted for the Biscoff Ice Cream Pack with batch codes 23139 and L23261 with best before dates 19 November 2024 and 18 March 2025. According to the organisation, the farm contacted 'relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.' The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers to explain why the product was being recalled and tell them what to do if they have purchased the product. It's understood that despite including the name 'Biscoff' on the label, the ice creams are not affiliated with the Lotus Biscoff brand and do not contain Biscoff products. The FSA asked customers who had bought the products and have an allergy to nuts not to eat it. It said: 'Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. For more information, please contact Cheshire Farm at: info@ Allergy UK estimate that tree nut allergies affect two per cent of children and 0.5 per cent of adults in the UK. Those with existing peanut allergies have an increased likelihood of around 30-40 per cent of developing a tree nut allergy. While it's most common to develop a nut allergy before the age of five, it's also possible for older children and adults to develop allergic symptoms. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can vary; they can occur within minutes of contact or up to two hours later. While most allergic reactions are mild, for some people they can be more moderate or severe, with anaphylaxis being the most severe form of reaction, which can be life threatening. Cheshire Farm produces an 'extensive range of quality real dairy ice creams, fruit sorbets and vegan products' in more than 40 flavours with over 25 non-dairy options. The farm was founded in 1984 by Tom and Margaret Fell, when they moved to Drumlin Hall Farm with two sons, Graeme and Jonathan. More than 40 years later, they have gone on to make multi-award-winning ice cream. The Ice Cream Farm is a popular visitor attraction in Chester that holds the Guinness World Record for being the 'largest ice cream shop in the world'. The Independent has reached out to Cheshire Farm for comment.
