City inter-school fest spotlights young talent

Kolkata: Students from over 20 schools showcased their talent as they participated in the inter-school fest, Kalakosh, held by South Point High School. Among the events were essay competition Perceptum, chess contest Chessmate, music competition Saaz-Sargam and debate contest Cerebrate. This year, 127 students from 23 schools participated in Perceptum, held in three languages. Oishani Dutta from Vivekananda Mission School won the Bengali category, while Akshay Agarwal of South Point won the Hindi one. Debadrita Bhaduri of Garden High secured the top position in English essay category I (IX-X) and Mahika Hemani of MP Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School in category II (XI-XII). Chessmate, held over two days, had 172 students from 43 teams vying against each other. At the end of nine rounds under the FIDE Swiss League System, Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir walked away with the top prize in the boys' category and Sudhir Memorial Institute in the girls' category. The event had Swati Gautam and Shankar Ramalingam as judges. Among the six finalists, Shri Shikshayatan won the contest. Quiz master Charanpreet Singh conducted Q-Point, which had 20 participating schools. Eight qualified for the final round and DPS Newtown won. Six out of eight teams made it to the finals of Saaz Sargam. The judges, including ghatam exponent Somnath Roy and sarod maestro Debojyoti Bose, declared DPS Ruby Park the winner. Composer Kalyan Sen Barat and singer Chandrabali Rudra Dutta judged Satrangi, the singing competition. Ten schools took part in Masquerade, one-act play competition, which was judged by theatre personalities Asit Basu, Sohag Sen and Ishita Mukhopadhyay. M P Birla Foundation clinched the trophy.
