City inter-school fest spotlights young talent

Kolkata: Students from over 20 schools showcased their talent as they participated in the inter-school fest, Kalakosh, held by South Point High School. Among the events were essay competition Perceptum, chess contest Chessmate, music competition Saaz-Sargam and debate contest Cerebrate.
This year, 127 students from 23 schools participated in Perceptum, held in three languages. Oishani Dutta from Vivekananda Mission School won the Bengali category, while Akshay Agarwal of South Point won the Hindi one. Debadrita Bhaduri of Garden High secured the top position in English essay category I (IX-X) and Mahika Hemani of MP Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School in category II (XI-XII).
Chessmate, held over two days, had 172 students from 43 teams vying against each other.
At the end of nine rounds under the FIDE Swiss League System, Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir walked away with the top prize in the boys' category and Sudhir Memorial Institute in the girls' category.

Debater Pradeep Gooptu moderated Cerebrate, in which 22 teams took part. The event had Swati Gautam and Shankar Ramalingam as judges. Among the six finalists, Shri Shikshayatan won the contest.
Quiz master Charanpreet Singh conducted Q-Point, which had 20 participating schools. Eight qualified for the final round and DPS Newtown won. Six out of eight teams made it to the finals of Saaz Sargam. The judges, including ghatam exponent Somnath Roy and sarod maestro Debojyoti Bose, declared DPS Ruby Park the winner. Composer Kalyan Sen Barat and singer Chandrabali Rudra Dutta judged Satrangi, the singing competition.
Ten schools took part in Masquerade, one-act play competition, which was judged by theatre personalities Asit Basu, Sohag Sen and Ishita Mukhopadhyay. M P Birla Foundation clinched the trophy.

New Delhi: Actor-producer Dheeraj Kumar died at the Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai on July 15. He was 80. He was suffering from Pneumonia. His last rites were performed at the Pawan Hans cremation ground today. What's Happening Deepak Parashar, Raza Murad, Surendra Pal paid their last respects to Dheeraj Kumar. After his death, His family said in a statement on Tuesday, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dheeraj Kumar, a renowned actor, producer, and director, who left us due to cardiac arrest. He was under treatment at Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri West and was on ventilator support. The industry mourns the loss of a talented professional who contributed significantly to the world of entertainment. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace." Later in the evening, Dheeraj Kumar's company Creative Eye LTD issued a statement in the memory of the actor-producer. "Dheerajji treated everyone with equal warmth and respect-regardless of stature-offering a smile, a kind word, or help whenever needed. He was always laughing, always giving, and always present-for his family, friends, and the industry at large. "A true gentleman, he was a father figure, friend, and guide to many. He will be remembered not just as an actor, but as a mentor, a gentle soul, and a true gentleman. We thank everyone for their prayers and support during this time," the media company said in the statement. Dheeraj Kumar's Achievements Dheeraj Kumar worked in Hindi films like Roti Kapda Aur Makan, Sargam, Kranti and many more. He entered the entertainment industry in 1965. He was one of the finalists of a talent show along with Subhash Ghai and Rajesh Khanna. Rajesh Khanna was the eventual winner. He acted in 21 Punjabi films from 1970 to 1984. He started a production company, Creative Eye and is its chairman and managing director. In the film Swami, the song Ka Karoon Sajani, Aaye Na Balam was picturised on him. He has also worked in other films such as Heera Panna and Raaton Ka Raja. Dheeraj Kumar recently attended the prayer meet of veteran actor Manoj Kumar, his Kranti co-star who died on April 4, 2025. Veteran actor-producer Dheeraj Kumar passes away at 79 due to pneumonia

Renowned actor, producer, and television pioneer Dheeraj Kumar died on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, at the age of 79 due to complications from acute pneumonia. The veteran personality was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai, where he had been placed under intensive care and ventilator support in his final days. Tomorrow at 6 am, his mortal remains will be taken home from the hospital and held until 10 am as a sign of respect. At 11 am, the last ceremonies will be held at the Pawan Hans cremation site in Vile Parle West. His contributions to television and Hindi and Punjabi films were well-known. Dheeraj Kumar dies of pneumonia Kumar's close associate and family friend Ajay Shukla informed PTI, "He passed away this morning at 11:00 am due to pneumonia at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He was unwell and was admitted to the hospital on Saturday as he was having fever, cold and cough. He was admitted to the ICU due to his age". Shukla added that Kumar's last rites will be conducted at Pawan Hans Crematorium on Wednesday. Kumar's family confirmed the news of his death in a statement. 'With heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of veteran actor, producer and director and beloved human being Dheeraj Kumar on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, around 12 noon, surrounded by family...' The family stated, "He was always laughing, always giving, and always present for his family, friends, and the industry at large. A true gentleman, he was a father figure, friend, and guide to many. He will be remembered not just as an actor but as a mentor, a gentle soul, and a true gentleman. We thank everyone for their prayers and support during this time". Who was Dheeraj Kumar? Dheeraj Kumar worked in the television and film industry for more than 50 years. He started his career in the entertainment industry as a finalist in a 1965 talent competition that also included filmmaker Subhash Ghai and superstar Rajesh Khanna. After starring in the lead role in the 1970 movie Raaton Ka Raja, he went on to appear in a number of Hindi and Punjabi productions. He also played a minor role in films like Sargam (1979), Kranti (1981), and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974). Between 1970 and 1984, Kumar appeared in more than 20 films and was a well-known figure in Punjabi cinema. He established the production company Creative Eye Limited in 1986, which later had a big impact on Indian television. Popular mythological and family dramas such as Om Namah Shivay, which aired on Doordarshan National from 1997 to 2001, Shree Ganesh, Rishton Ke Bhanwar Mein Uljhi Niyati, Adalat, and Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann were made by the firm under his direction.
