Why Does Every Summer Need to Be the Summer ‘of' Something?
On March 26, 2021, Chet Hanks, the son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, turned his phone camera on himself to make a surprisingly influential declaration: It was the beginning of 'white boy summer.' Not a Donald Trump- or NASCAR-adjacent brand of whiteness, he clarified. His reference points were singers like Jon B. and Jack Harlow: He pictured hot months filled with tank tops, tattoos and attempts to get invited to the proverbial cookout. This did not materialize, but Hanks's phrase stuck; it is still used constantly. When Tom Hardy appeared at this year's Met Gala in what looked like a durag, one popular tweet called it a harbinger of 'six more weeks of white boy summer.' Hanks has to issue periodic statements defending the idea from use by supremacist groups. More than anything, the meme solidified a lasting cultural practice: Every summer, the internet must come to a consensus on what that summer is all about. Hanks was not the first to brand the season. For one thing, all modern efforts sit in the vast shadow of 1967's Summer of Love. For another, 'white boy summer' was preceded by 2019's 'Hot Girl Summer,' which was both a Megan Thee Stallion song and a catchphrase people used to justify everything from sleeping around to eating tinned fish. The years since have featured a summer themed around a 'Minions' movie (2022); the summer of 'Barbenheimer' (2023); and the blockbuster 'brat summer' of 2024, in which a Charli XCX album and its distinctive, apple-green cover so dominated internet discourse that the 'brat' theme was briefly taken up by Kamala Harris's presidential campaign. (As the young Democratic activist David Hogg told followers online, 'Nancy Pelosi has been informed of the meaning of Brat.') What about this year? In April, Charli XCX took the stage at the Coachella festival and proposed some fresh options, which flashed on screens behind her. Almost all involved film auteurs with 2025 releases: Ari Aster summer, David Cronenberg summer, the summers of Celine Song or Joachim Trier or Darren Aronofsky. These propositions did get some traction; Elle Fanning was later spotted in a 'Joachim Trier Summer' T-shirt. But unsettling work like Cronenberg's doesn't exactly have mass-market viral potential. As someone quipped on X: '[Gets arrested for opening an unlicensed gynecology practice] This was supposed to be the summer of Cronenberg :(' Since spring, I have encountered nominations for Vampire Weekend summer, slop summer, rat summer, creek girl summer and #bootsonlysummer, a fashion trend involving soccer cleats. A friend who left X for Bluesky noticed a lack of summer discourse on the newer platform and made a halfhearted attempt to start 'Bob Seger summer'; I was one of only nine likers. By June, the branding of summer 2025 still seemed as muddled as this April post on X: 'I have got to have a white lotus lorde Addison hot yoga all adventurous women do Kendall Roy sunrise on the reaping Joan Baez summer.' Chet Hanks is in on the joke — and this time, he's turning it into career momentum. The actor and musician, long known for courting controversy, is now drawing praise for his performance in 'Running Point,' the Mindy Kaling-produced Netflix comedy. Hanks, son of Hollywood royalty Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, plays Travis Bugg, a tattooed, attention-seeking basketball star and wannabe rapper who becomes a public relations headache for his team. It's a role that winks knowingly at Hanks' tabloid-fueled past. 'When I first got the audition, it said he's tatted up. He's a wannabe rapper, and he's just like a complete media liability,' Hanks told People in an interview published Thursday, July 10. 'I said, 'I have no idea how I'm going to pull this off. I'm going to have to really get in character, maybe do a full method, Daniel Day Lewis, because obviously I'm nothing like that.'' The actor, who years ago attempted to launch a real-life rap career as Chet Haze, insists the casting was a stretch — but his delivery suggests a knowing smile. 'Hopefully I did it justice,' he added. The role debuted in tandem with the success of 'Leaving Hollywood,' a single from his country duo Something Out West. The group recently released an EP by the same name. 'It doesn't surprise me,' Hanks said. 'That's how God works.' Sober for more than three years, Hanks credits his bandmate Drew Arthur — also in recovery — for helping keep him grounded. 'You don't want to let yourself down,' Hanks said. 'You don't want to let your buddy down.'

Chet Hanks is thankful to get to work on the "Forrest Gump"-themed music video for his band's new album with "the most easygoing dude ever" — his Oscar-winning dad. Chet Hanks, 34, who makes up half the country music duo Something Out West with musician Drew Arthur, spoke on TODAY June 24 about his father, Tom Hanks, appearing in the video for their song "You Better Run." "Oh, man, he's a real prima donna," Hanks joked to Jenna Bush Hager and guest co-host Niecy Nash-Betts about working with his father. "I'm just kidding. He's the most easygoing dude ever. Love you, Dad." Chet Hanks re-creates his father's title character in "Forrest Gump" in multiple scenes in the video for "You Better Run," which dropped in March. At the end of the clip, Tom Hanks pops up next to him on a bench. Arthur recalled the surreal feeling of being on the set with the two-time Oscar winner for the video. "It was funny because I had to do a scene before him, and he's just standing there. And I was like, 'Tom was waiting for me,'" Arthur said. Chet Hanks is the third of four children Tom Hanks shares with wife Rita Wilson, whom he married in 1988. Chet Hanks and Arthur performed their song "Leaving Hollywood" on TODAY from their new EP of the same title. The country music sound is a departure from Hanks' previous musical releases as a rapper. "I think it was necessary," Hanks said about changing genres. "Not that I don't love rap still because I do, but when I got sober I had to switch it up. There was too much association with my old (life)." Arthur is "almost 10 years sober" and said the duo have "been having each other's back" in maintaining their sobriety. Hanks has also gotten back into the family business, as he played Travis Bugg, the point guard for the fictional Los Angeles Waves, on the Netflix sports comedy hit "Running Point," starring Kate Hudson. Tom Hanks ' wild son Chet Hanks was seen without a shirt on in the Venice Beach neighborhood of Los Angeles on Wednesday. The 34-year-old reality TV star displayed his array of 70 large tattoos on his chest, back, arms and legs that take a while to dissect. There was a lot of new ink on his back: the inside of the cross was filled with shading that was not there last year. Other tattoos include the writing 'I Am Who I Am,' several crosses, the name Michalah, an image of baby Jesus with a halo, a genie lamp, sunbursts and clouds, among others. His head was shaved and he had a beard with diamonds in his ears and a black bracelet on his wrist as he wore black shorts over long underwear. The son of Rita Wilson was going for a run to stay in shape for his acting career. This comes just after he was romantically linked to Real Housewives Of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak, 47, as they got steamy on their show Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets. . Last year Chet said that meeting Kim was 'one of the best moments of my life.' Chet and Kim flirted outrageously with each other on an episode of The Surreal Life on MTV that aired in late July 2024. Kim is still in the midst of a contentious divorce from Kroy Biermann and is reportedly dating someone new. Chet has been doing well with his acting career. The actor has previously been through rehab for addiction and as he prepares to show the world that he is 'just a regular guy' on the new reality show Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets, he admitted that he only found life 'difficult' before he made the decision to live alcohol-free almost three years ago. He told People: 'I'm ready for people to see that I'm just a regular guy. That's why I signed up for Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets. It was honestly one of the best experiences of my life, and I'm not just saying that. I had a blast, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. 'There was a little drama, but not much! One hundred percent. None of this would be possible without sobriety. It's not difficult at all. What's difficult is when you're trying to manage your life and you're not sober, that's what's difficult. When you just commit and decide and you stick to it, it's not even something that you negotiate with. It's just a non-negotiable. And life becomes extremely easy.' In 1994, when her mother lost primary custody of her and her brother, Colin Hanks, 46, the siblings moved to Los Angeles to live with their father and his second wife, Rita Wilson, 68. Samantha, born Susan Dillingham, died in 2002 at the age of 49 following a battle with bone cancer. Tom legally separated from Samantha in 1985, and their seven-year marriage officially ended in divorce in 1987. E.A. has shared her story in her literary debut, 'The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road', which was released on Tuesday. 'When I say my parents, I really mean my dad and Rita, because they've been together since before I can really remember.' In excerpts published by People, it's clear E.A. uses her 352-page memoir to detail what she described as a chaotic childhood shaped by her mother's mental illness, which she suspects was undiagnosed bipolar disorder. The author said in her memoir: 'She pushed me, shook me, pulled at my hair and locked me in a closet once or twice. 'She told me there were men hiding in her closet who were waiting for us to go to sleep to come out and do horrible things.' E.A. added her childhood was defined by instability and hunger. She said: 'It was either feast or famine at home,' before detailing how she and Colin were sometimes left without food.
