Tom Hanks's unhinged son jokes that playing a ‘media liability' in Netflix hit was a stretch
The actor and musician, long known for courting controversy, is now drawing praise for his performance in 'Running Point,' the Mindy Kaling-produced Netflix comedy.
Hanks, son of Hollywood royalty Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, plays Travis Bugg, a tattooed, attention-seeking basketball star and wannabe rapper who becomes a public relations headache for his team.
It's a role that winks knowingly at Hanks' tabloid-fueled past.
'When I first got the audition, it said he's tatted up. He's a wannabe rapper, and he's just like a complete media liability,' Hanks told People in an interview published Thursday, July 10. 'I said, 'I have no idea how I'm going to pull this off. I'm going to have to really get in character, maybe do a full method, Daniel Day Lewis, because obviously I'm nothing like that.''
The actor, who years ago attempted to launch a real-life rap career as Chet Haze, insists the casting was a stretch — but his delivery suggests a knowing smile.
'Hopefully I did it justice,' he added.
The role debuted in tandem with the success of 'Leaving Hollywood,' a single from his country duo Something Out West. The group recently released an EP by the same name.
'It doesn't surprise me,' Hanks said. 'That's how God works.'
Sober for more than three years, Hanks credits his bandmate Drew Arthur — also in recovery — for helping keep him grounded.
'You don't want to let yourself down,' Hanks said. 'You don't want to let your buddy down.'

Netflix's new crime thriller series looks like a mystery-laced revenge story — here's the first trailer
Netflix just dropped the first trailer for 'Two Graves,' a new Spanish crime thriller series directed by Goya Award-winning filmmaker Kike Maíllo. The story follows a grandmother's frantic search for her missing granddaughter and her friend, who vanished mysteriously two years earlier. What starts as a quest for answers quickly spirals into a relentless pursuit of revenge. 'Two Graves' is set to premiere on Netflix on August 29, and judging by the trailer, it looks pretty brutal. The trailer introduces Isabel (Kiti Mánver), the grandmother of one of the missing girls, who, with nothing left to lose, takes justice into her own hands and launches an off-the-books investigation. We also meet Rafael (Álvaro Morte), the father of the other girl who went missing alongside Isabel's granddaughter. In the trailer, Isabel confronts him directly, accusing him of knowing more than he's letting on. He simply responds with: 'I owe my daughter this revenge.' This is a clear signal that the story will shift from a slow-burn mystery into full-blown revenge thriller territory. The rest of the footage is pretty brutal at times. Quick flashes show Isabel smashing someone's knee with a hammer in a desperate attempt to extract information, and another scene depicts someone being crushed under the weight of a car. It's gritty, violent, and clear that neither character is holding back anymore. Along with the first trailer, we also got an official synopsis: 'Two years after the disappearance of Verónica and Marta, two 16-year-old friends, the investigation is declared closed due to lack of evidence and suspects. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'The grandmother of one of the two girls, Isabel, who has nothing to lose, decides to carry out an investigation beyond the law. Isabel will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth about what happened that night and what begins as the search for a culprit, soon becomes a story of revenge.' The rest of the cast includes Hovik Keuchkerian, Nadia Vilaplana, Joan Solé, Zoe Arnao, Nonna Cardoner, Carlos Scholz, and Salva Reina. 'Two Graves' was created by Agustín Martínez and helmed by director Kike Maíllo. With a track record of emotionally gripping and visually compelling movies, Maíllo's distinctive style will likely be instantly recognizable in this upcoming series. He first gained major recognition with 'Eva,' a sci-fi thriller that won him the Goya Award for Best New Director. His subsequent works, such as 'Toro' and 'A Perfect Enemy' show his versatility in crafting tension-filled narratives across genres. Martínez is a celebrated Spanish novelist and screenwriter, best known for crime dramas like 'Monteperdido.' When creating 'Two Graves,' he told Netflix: 'Two Graves is a revenge story led by a character rarely seen at the heart of fiction, someone who could only find her place on a platform like Netflix: a grandmother willing to do whatever it takes to seek justice for the loss of her granddaughter. 'A thriller full of emotion and unexpected twists, brought to life by Kiti Mánver, Álvaro Morte and Hovik Keuchkerian, characters I truly enjoyed writing.' Even though 'Two Graves' isn't officially labeled as a revenge thriller, the trailer definitely leans into that concept with its brutal scenes. Even the shot of Isabel casually wiping blood off her piano made me chuckle (in a good way). But what makes the series stand out isn't some lone, haunted antihero like John Wick. Instead, we get a grandmother and a father, both fiercely determined to seek justice… the bloody way. It's a refreshing twist to say the least. 'Two Graves' looks like it could be a gripping ride packed into just three episodes. If stories about grief turning into a violent reckoning are your kind of thrill, this crime thriller series belongs on your watchlist. You can stream 'Two Graves' on Netflix starting August 29. Elle Fanning Said Fan Commentary Influenced Her Hunger Games Casting
When it was revealed this year that Elle Fanning would be playing Effie Trinket in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the announcement was both incredibly exciting and not all that surprising. Sunrise on the Reaping is the second prequel book in Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games novel series, and is set 24 years before the events of the first book in the original trilogy. The book — which hit shelves in March 2025 — and its accompanying movie adaptation were announced back in June 2024, and fans had already locked in their ideal castings for the prequel's younger versions of beloved characters like Haymitch Abernathy, Plutarch Heavensbee, Caesar Flickerman, and, of course, Effie Trinket. For context, Effie features heavily in the original Hunger Games trilogy as the escort and advisor to the District 12 tributes. And in Sunrise on the Reaping, a younger Effie is a stylist for Haymitch, who is preparing to participate in the 50th Hunger Games as the District 12 tribute. If you're familiar with the Hunger Games, you'll know that Effie — who was portrayed in the OG movies by Elizabeth Banks — is quite the fashionista. So, when it came to casting a younger Effie for Sunrise on the Reaping, minds went straight to Elle, who fans think has always been 'giving Effie Trinket energy.' 'y'all have any idea that this fandom has been making young effie edits with elle fanning for YEARS??? and until months ago this was an impossible dream???' one X post in response to the announcement read.'Casting director deserves an Oscar alone for what he's done here,' added another fan, while someone else wrote: 'OH MY GOD ITS HAPPENING THE PROPHECY WE MADE IT GUYSSZBDJCJFNDJDJFN.''Elle fanning as Effie Trinket was the most accurate and universally accepted casting that has ever happened in recent years,' echoed someone else. And now, Elle has weighed in on the discourse surrounding her casting, revealing that the online campaigning from fans definitely influenced her landing the job. During a new interview with Josh Horowitz for MTV, Elle was asked about her 'perfect casting' in the upcoming project, to which she said: 'It was funny, because I think fans made this happen in a way. The studio said they were getting kind of hounded online, like, 'Elle needs to play Effie'...So they called.' And it's not just the fans who are pleased with Elle's casting; Elizabeth Banks is very much on board too. When Elle was announced as Effie, Elizabeth contacted her directly with celebratory flowers and told People: 'I'm super excited. I texted the producers as well, and I think she's perfect.' Speaking with MTV, Elle expressed how thrilled she is to be following in Elizabeth's footsteps. 'I'm a huge fan, and Effie has always been my favorite character,' she said. 'I think Elizabeth Banks is— she brought so much, even beyond the books, like, layers to that character. I love her, and I have [gotten] to talk to Elizabeth. We've texted, and she sent me flowers and said, 'May the odds be ever in your favor.'' The movie is due to begin shooting this summer and is currently set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. Giving some behind-the-scenes insight, Elle said: 'I haven't started filming yet, but we're thinking [about it] and hopefully making the fans happy.' As you may have seen, Elle's participation in Sunrise on the Reaping isn't the only fan-casting for the movie that became a reality. You can read a breakdown of who's playing who in the upcoming movie adaptation here.

Lena Dunham Is Happy for Netflix Rom-Com ‘Good Sex' to Skip Theatrical Release: ‘I Don't Think This Will Live or Die By That'
Lena Dunham isn't just making a comeback with her Megan Stalter-starring Netflix romantic comedy series 'Too Much' — she also has a movie she wrote and is directing set to premiere on the platform, and starring Oscar-winner Natalie Portman. In fact, it would appear that Netflix really wanted 'Good Sex,' also a rom-com which co-stars genre stalwart Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, and Rashida Jones. After all, the streamer paid a reported $55 million for it. Dunham, though, isn't precious about the movie forgoing a theatrical release to go straight to the platform. To her, that's someone else's battle. More from IndieWire 'Eddington' Review: Ari Aster's Bleak and Brilliant Look at Post-COVID America Feels Like the First Truly Modern Western 'A Little Prayer' Trailer: David Strathairn Warns Jane Levy About Infidelity in Critically Acclaimed Sundance Family Drama 'I really just want people to sit on a couch with their moms and their besties and lean in,' she said in an interview with Variety. 'I love watching other filmmakers fight for the theatrical-release element — but I don't think this will live or die by that.' 'Good Sex' went into production this month, so a release date is still very much pending. Tucker Pillsbury, known to the music scene as rapper Role Model, will make his film debut in the movie. 'He had this humor and essence that really felt like rom-com gold,' Dunham said, describing finding him on her shadow TikTok account. 'He's giving early Brad Pitt, like when you saw him in 'Thelma & Louise.'' In a nod to her late friend and romcom queen writer/director Nora Ephron, Dunham was excited to get Ryan on board. She pitched the movie to Ryan when they both attended Taylor Swift's London stop on the Eras tour. 'I decided, it's now or never, and I'm going to shoot my shot. She couldn't be a lovelier person,' Dunham related. 'Shout-out Taylor — thank you for that. She brings everyone together; she makes the world go round.' Ryan has been slowly raising her profile once again, after a fairly stagnant period without much mainstream action. In February, she appeared in a much-discussed Hellmann's Mayo Super Bowl commercial with Billy Crystal that lampooned undoubtedly her most famous movie moment from 'When Harry Met Sally.' Two years ago, Ryan made her own stab at writing/directing a romantic comedy with the small-scale theatrical release 'What Happens Later' alongside David Duchovny.
