Nantes 'finalizing' deal for Colorado's Chidozie Awaziem 🇳🇬
A busy summer appears to be on tap for the Colorado Rapids after reports that defender Chidozie Awaziem is nearing a return to Europe. Per MLS insider Tom Bogert (citing L'Equipe), Nantes is finalizing a move for the 28-year-old Nigerian center-back, who is adamant about securing a move back across the pond due to family concerns. Awaziem last appeared across the pond as recently as 2024 with Portuguese outfit Boavista, but he also did a previous loan stint with Nantes during the 2017-18 campaign. After his move to MLS, first with Cincinnati, Awaziem signed a one-year deal with the Rapids in December of last year and went on to make 20 appearances across the current 2025 MLS season. 📸 Editorial Photo Credit: © Joe Nicholson | 2025 Jul 16 - Imagn Images

Chidozie Awaziem set for Nantes return
Chidozie Awaziem (28) is set to return to FC Nantes, according to L'Equipe. The Nigerian central defender will reportedly sign a three-year contract. Awaziem came through the FC Porto academy but failed to establish himself in the first team, making just 15 appearances for the Portuguese side. During his time at Porto, he was loaned to Nantes for the 2017–18 season, where he made 23 appearances for Les Canaris. Further loan spells followed in Turkey (Çaykur Rizespor) and Spain (CD Leganés), before he moved permanently to Boavista F.C. in September 2020. Advertisement After just one season at the Portuguese club, Awaziem went out on loan again – first to Alanyaspor in September 2021, then to Hajduk Split for the 2022–23 campaign. He returned to Boavista for the 2023–24 season, followed by short stints with FC Cincinnati and Colorado Rapids in the MLS. Having yet to settle permanently at any club in his career, Awaziem will be hoping to make a more permanent home at the Stade de la Beaujoire. GFFN | Ed Marsh

Concacaf clears LAFC's Palencia after allegations of derogatory language
Concacaf has cleared Los Angeles FC defender Sergi Palencia of 'discriminatory action' against Colorado Rapids player Chidozie Awaziem after conducting its own internal investigation, the governing body announced on Tuesday. Palencia was alleged to have used derogatory language against Awaziem during a Concacaf Champions Cup match between the two teams last week. Advertisement 'While the evidence confirms that the interaction between Palencia and Colorado Rapids player Chidozie Awaziem involved inappropriate language, it is clear to the Committee that the word reported by the Colorado Rapids in its official position to Concacaf was not used,' Concacaf's statement read. Last Wednesday's opening-round encounter was stopped after Awaziem made the accusation late in the second half. After the match, head coaches from both teams acknowledged the incident, though neither side mentioned what, specifically, Palencia was alleged to have said. 'Concacaf will continue to urge teams, players, and fans to participate in our sport positively and with respect for the opposition,' Concacaf continued in its statement. 'There is no room for discrimination in our game. What's Wrong is Wrong.' The Concacaf Champions Cup serves as the club championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Though last week's match was contested between two MLS teams, the investigation and its findings were handled by Concacaf, which administers the competition. LAFC declined to comment on Concacaf's findings. The Colorado Rapids did not reply to a request for comment. LAFC eliminated Colorado and advanced to the round of 16, with the club hosting the Columbus Crew in the first leg Tuesday night.

Concacaf investigating alleged hate speech incident in LAFC-Colorado
There was a scene during Tuesday night's Concacaf Champions Cup encounter between LAFC and the Colorado Rapids that felt eerily familiar, one soccer fans across the world have unfortunately become accustomed to witnessing in recent years. As the match entered its final minutes, Colorado defender Chidozie Awaziem began pleading with referee Pierre-Luc Lauziere. Play was stopped. Awaziem, along with match officials, spoke with both managers, and with captains from both teams. After a delay of several minutes, it seemed clear enough what was going on. Advertisement Awaziem's interactions closely mirrored MLS's official protocol for incidents of hate speech, which dictate the actions of its match officials during such moments. Eventually, game action resumed. Soon after, when the final whistle blew, Awaziem — who is Nigerian — once again began protesting, this time directly to LAFC defender Sergi Palencia, who hails from Spain. Fears of a potential incident of hate speech were confirmed after the match by Rapids head coach Chris Armas. 'There was an incident that happened on the field,' Armas said. 'Our player, Chidoze Awaziem, was pretty clear and upset at a derogatory term that he (Palencia) said. He (Awaziem) was clear about what was said. Our club, myself, we're fully behind our player to support him with an investigation into what exactly what went down. He was pretty upset.' GO DEEPER MLS and its referees are getting a taste of Messi's fiery side LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo also confirmed the incident. 'One of Colorado's players had heard something, a word, that bothered him,' Cherundolo told the media in attendance. 'He thought that it was directed towards him. I don't know what directly what was said. I was on the sideline. I'm sure the referees will write a report and then we'll figure it out from there. If players hear something and they can't play, we want to support the players. We'll let the referees and Concacaf figure that out.' Concacaf has started an investigation to the incident and issued the following statement The Athletic on Wednesday afternoon: 'Concacaf has initiated an investigation into a reported incident between players Chidozie Awaziem of Colorado Rapids and Sergi Palencia of Los Angeles FC during last night's Concacaf Champions Cup match. The investigation will involve a thorough review of the match officials' reports, available match footage, and the respective positions of both clubs.' Advertisement What Palencia is alleged to have said is not clear, and neither head coach was asked about it after the match. LAFC, the Colorado Rapids and MLS did not respond to The Athletic's request for comment on Wednesday. LAFC won the match, 1-0, and advanced to a round-of-16 date with the Columbus Crew on the away-goals tiebreaker following a 2-2 aggregate draw. GO DEEPER Messi, Miami eliminate Sporting KC from Concacaf Champions Cup MLS, like many other leagues across the world, has a history of incidents of racist hate speech. In 2023, D.C. United forward Taxi Fountas was forced out of MLS after repeated allegations of racial abuse, the most recent of which involved his own teammate. Earlier that year, New York Red Bulls player Dante Vanzeir was suspended for six games and fined by the league for using a racial slur during a game against the San Jose Earthquakes. In 2021, Portland Timbers player Diego Chará accused a Minnesota United player of using a slur, though that allegation could not be conclusively proven. The league has also grappled with the use of homophobic language. Cucho Hernández, Sebastian Lletget and Santiago Sosa have all been suspended in recent years for violations of the league's policy against discriminatory language.
