Concacaf clears LAFC's Palencia after allegations of derogatory language

Concacaf has cleared Los Angeles FC defender Sergi Palencia of 'discriminatory action' against Colorado Rapids player Chidozie Awaziem after conducting its own internal investigation, the governing body announced on Tuesday. Palencia was alleged to have used derogatory language against Awaziem during a Concacaf Champions Cup match between the two teams last week.

'While the evidence confirms that the interaction between Palencia and Colorado Rapids player Chidozie Awaziem involved inappropriate language, it is clear to the Committee that the word reported by the Colorado Rapids in its official position to Concacaf was not used,' Concacaf's statement read.
Last Wednesday's opening-round encounter was stopped after Awaziem made the accusation late in the second half. After the match, head coaches from both teams acknowledged the incident, though neither side mentioned what, specifically, Palencia was alleged to have said.
'Concacaf will continue to urge teams, players, and fans to participate in our sport positively and with respect for the opposition,' Concacaf continued in its statement. 'There is no room for discrimination in our game. What's Wrong is Wrong.'
The Concacaf Champions Cup serves as the club championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Though last week's match was contested between two MLS teams, the investigation and its findings were handled by Concacaf, which administers the competition.
LAFC declined to comment on Concacaf's findings. The Colorado Rapids did not reply to a request for comment.
LAFC eliminated Colorado and advanced to the round of 16, with the club hosting the Columbus Crew in the first leg Tuesday night.
