Caste enumeration to aid inclusion; no politics involved, says Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday (May 25) that caste enumeration is a step towards his government's model to bring the marginalised and those left behind in the mainstream of development. Addressing a day-long National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Chief Ministers' Conclave, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the national capital, he said the success of Operation Sindoor was also a reaffirmation of the achievements the country has made in its push towards self-reliance. 'Participated in the NDA Chief Ministers' Conclave in Delhi. We had extensive deliberations about various issues. Various states showcased their best practices in diverse areas including water conservation, grievance redressal, strengthening administrative frameworks, education, women empowerment, sports and more. It was wonderful to hear these experiences,' the prime minister posted on X. 'I emphasised the need to add momentum to our development trajectories and ensure the benefits of a double-engine government reach the people in an effective manner. Spoke about building stronger synergies in key areas be it cleanliness, sanitation, healthcare, youth empowerment, agriculture, technology and more,' he further added. Earlier, a resolution, praising the valour of the armed forces and the brave leadership of the Prime Minister, was passed during the meeting. The resolution, proposed by Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, said Operation Sindoor has boosted the self-confidence of Indians. The resolution said the prime minister has always supported the armed forces and that Operation Sindoor has given a befitting reply to terrorists and their sponsors. Tributes were also paid to the innocent people killed in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in the meeting. Over 20 chief ministers and 18 deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states gathered in New Delhi to attend the programme. Several chief ministers made presentations on the signature schemes of their states. After the meeting, Union Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda, addressing a press conference, said Operation Sindoor was highly praised by several leaders during the programme. 'Today, our National Democratic Alliance's CM conclave was held under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Our 20 CMs and 18 Deputy CMs were present in this meeting. Two resolutions were passed. The first resolution was on Operation Sindoor, which was carried out under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and the work of our army was highly praised, and the bravery shown by the army was highly appreciated,' JP Nadda added. The resolution on caste census was also passed in the conclave, with the leaders praising the decision of PM Modi to conduct the caste enumeration exercise, while also affirming that this was not done due to 'caste politics' but to ensure that the deprived, oppressed and exploited are brought to the mainstream. 'Today, a resolution was also passed in the meeting on the caste census. And everyone has given their consent to this, as well as praised this decision of (PM) Modi and congratulated him. We have made it clear that we do not do caste politics, but want to bring the deprived, oppressed and exploited, who have been left out, into the mainstream. This is the need of the society,' Nadda told media persons. The leaders also discussed the Chhattisgarh government's development model and innovative initiatives. The day-long NDA CMs and Dy CMs conclave, chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi, was a brainstorming session on good governance issues. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were among the senior leaders present at the meeting that served as a platform for discussing good governance practices and innovative state-level initiatives. The meeting that was organised weeks after India carried out strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir under 'Operation Sindoor' is being seen as a coordinated attempt to reinforce the Modi government's stance on national security. - The Statesman/ANN

Leaders resolved to mark the anniversary in remembrance of the Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a period that exposed citizens to widespread political turmoil and suppression of civil liberties. The government of India announced last year, 2024, that June 25 will be remembered annually as 'Constitution Murder Day' in remembrance of the Emergency, which stands as a stark chapter in the nation's history. Declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Emergency saw the suspension of fundamental rights and the imposition of strict censorship, aiming to quell political dissent and maintain order. At NDA meet, PM Modi warns leaders against 'speaking out of turn' amid recent row on Operation Sindoor remarks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi during National Democratic Alliance Chief Ministers' Conclave, in New Delhi. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: At the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) meeting on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged leaders to refrain from speaking out of turn, as the BJP faces backlash over off-the-cuff remarks made by two party members in the wake of Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terrorist attack, news agency PTI reported citing sources. The BJP found itself stuck in a political quagmire after Madhya Pradesh MP Vijay Shah, in a public meeting, said: "Modi ji sent their own sister (Col Sophia Qureshi) to take revenge". The minister was referring to India's offensive against Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack. Later on Friday, the minister, who is facing an SC-ordered inquiry for his comments on Col Sofiya Qureshi, issued a video apology, calling his remarks a 'linguistic mistake'. Five days before the May 28 SC hearing, when the SIT probe is to be submitted, Shah released a 45-second video on X saying he did not intend to 'offend any community', and has "sincerely apologised to the entire Indian Army , sister Colonel Sofiya and all the countrymen". This time, the apology was with folded hands and without the phrase: 'if anyone is hurt'. On Monday, SC had dismissed his first apology as 'crocodile tears'. The MP minister has not been seen in public since his May 11 remarks triggered nationwide outrage. While the party remained mum on the issue, another loose comment from Rajya Sabha MP Ram Chander Jangra replenished the opposition's political ammunition to train guns at the BJP. Ram Chander Jangra, who is an Upper House MP from Haryana, speaking at an event, said the women lacked the courage and spirit of warrior women, "and that is why the death toll was high". He further claimed that the victims died "with folded hands" and suggested that if they had received training under central government schemes, they might have been able to resist the attackers and reduce the number of casualties.

Congress opposed Mandal, backed faith-based quota: NDA meet resolution on caste census

With the government announcing that the next census would also include caste enumeration, a resolution passed at the meeting of NDA Chief Ministers and deputy Chief Ministers Sunday condemned the Opposition's 'cheap politics' and targeted the Congress over the issue, while highlighting the efforts to empower deprived sections over the past 11 years. Trying to claim the social justice plank, the resolution stated that 'the Prime Minister's name will be etched in golden letters for fulfilling the vision of stalwarts like Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, Loknayak JP (Jayprakash Nayaran) and Karpoori Thakur'. The resolutions underlined various achievements of PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government such as lifting 15 crore people out of poverty and efforts 'to boost the dignity of those previously denied the same in the name of caste discrimination'. The resolution on caste census, moved by Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and seconded by Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, congratulated PM Modi for the move. Addressing the Chief Ministers, the PM said the caste census would do justice to the marginalised in every community. Targeting the Opposition, the resolution stated, 'We are dismayed by the cheap politics of the Opposition on this issue. They had the opportunity to govern the nation for several decades yet they did not do anything on this issue.' The resolution accused the Congress of 'defeating Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar twice (and) denying him a Bharat Ratna… delaying the implementation of the Mandal Commission (and) subsequently opposing it tooth and nail… opposing the OBC Commission (and) advocating faith-based reservations which are against the spirit of Dr Ambedkar's Constitution'. During the last Census (in 2011), it added that the Congress 'had deliberately avoided a scientifically conducted enumeration of castes'. 'Later, whatever the exercise that was conducted beyond the Census of India Act was also flawed and wrapped in needless secrecy,' it said and slammed the Congress for using the issue only for 'political manipulation'. In a post on X, PM Narendra Modi said, 'We had extensive deliberations about various issues. Various states showcased their best practices in diverse areas including water conservation, grievance redressal, strengthening administrative frameworks, education, women empowerment, sports and more. It was wonderful to hear these experiences.' Participated in the NDA Chief Ministers' Conclave in Delhi. We had extensive deliberations about various issues. Various states showcased their best practices in diverse areas including water conservation, grievance redressal, strengthening administrative frameworks, education,… — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) May 25, 2025 During the media briefing, BJP president J P Nadda said that the caste census issue has been on top of NDA's list of priorities from the beginning. '…Our government in Bihar, Nitish Kumar ji's government in Bihar, which was the first to bring the proposal for it, a resolution related to the caste census was also passed,' he said. Days after the April 30 surprise announcement by the government to conduct the caste census with the decennial census, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had said in Bihar's Darbhanga that the decision came only because of pressure from a 'vast majority of the population'. Gandhi had referred to the Telangana model as the 'correct manner' in which the caste census should be conducted, and alleged that despite laws providing for implementation of quotas in private institutions, neither the Modi government nor the Bihar government has done it. Nadda also said the campaign against Maoists was discussed and Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai detailed the steps taken to ensure success. Given an opportunity to share the best model practices for the other states to follow, Sai presented the Bastar Model — the development and the innovative initiatives in the state for delivering good governance. During the presentation, he also outlined the success of the Bastar Olympics. Chhattisgarh Home Minister Vijay Sharma, Nadda said, spoke about the rehabilitation of Maoist-affected areas and government schemes aimed at bringing them into mainstream. Then Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke about the strategy behind the campaign to eliminate Naxalism by 2026. Nadda said that best practices related to the implementation of Har Ghar Surya Yojana in Gujarat under the leadership of CM Bhupendra Patel were discussed. Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma gave a presentation on 'CM Connect' programme, in line with PM Modi's vision of a 'responsive, responsible and accountable' governance. This, Nadda said, was acknowledged as a model for other NDA CMs to be considered in their respective jurisdictions. Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath presented a booklet on the success of Kumbh Mela. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami gave a presentation on the implementation of the UCC in his state, Nadda said. (With inputs from Liz Mathew)

NDA conclave: PM Modi praises 'wonderful' deliberations on good governance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commended all participants of the NDA Chief Ministers' Conclave for sharing best practices and motivating other states to contribute to Viksit Bharat @2047. After the meeting, attended by about 20 chief ministers and 18 deputy chief ministers, PM Modi posted a message on the social media platform X: 'Participated in the NDA Chief Ministers' Conclave in Delhi. We had extensive deliberations about various issues.' 'Various states showcased their best practices in diverse areas, including water conservation, grievance redressal, strengthening administrative frameworks, education, women empowerment, sports and more. It was wonderful to hear these experiences,' he said. During the meeting, the leaders listened to PM Modi's Mann Ki Baat address, the first after Operation Sindoor. In the monthly radio address, PM Modi hailed the Armed Forces and said the operation was a reflection of a transforming India, united in the fight against terrorism and recognising the power of being self-reliant, sources said. The leaders paid tributes to the 26 people who were brutally killed by terrorists on April 22 in Kashmir's Pahalgam. Following this terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor to avenge the deaths. Nine terror bases in Pakistan and PoK were demolished in precision attacks by the India Armed Forces. A resolution was also passed praising the armed forces and their performance during Operation Sindoor and hailing PM Modi's leadership in the backdrop of the first anniversary of his government in its third term. The NDA conclave also adopted a proposal on the caste census. Sources said BJP President J.P. Nadda reminded the NDA leaders that the alliance stands for social justice for the marginalised and does not believe in indulging in politics over caste enumeration. A significant part of deliberations at this conclave is devoted to best practices by different NDA state governments. Several chief ministers made presentations on the signature schemes of their states. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also attended the conclave and said in a message on X, 'Today in New Delhi, along with all the fellow Chief Ministers, I got the opportunity to listen to the programme of honourable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiji @MannKiBaat.'
