Superfan ‘ChiefsAholic' sentenced to prison in Oklahoma for robberies
After receiving a federal prison sentence last year, Kansas City Chiefs superfan Xaviar Babudar, known for his costumed persona 'ChiefsAholic,' was sentenced Monday to additional prison time to be served in Oklahoma, following convictions for a multi-state bank and credit union robbery spree. Babudar was sentenced to 32 years in prison in Tulsa County, after being found guilty of one count of robbery with a firearm, one count of assault while masked or disguised, and one count of removing an electronic monitoring device. Last September, Babudar was sentenced to over 17 years in federal prison in U.S. District Court in Kansas City after pleading guilty to three charges in connection with a string of robberies or attempted robberies of nearly a dozen banks and credit unions across seven states in 2022 and 2023. They include a count of money laundering, a count of transporting stolen property across state lines, and a count of bank robbery. In Oklahoma, Tulsa County District Judge Michelle Keely County issued Babudar's 32-year sentence to run concurrently with his federal sentence, according to a news release from Tulsa County District Attorney Stephen Kunzweiler. The infamous superfan will spend 17 and a half years in federal prison, and then be transferred to Oklahoma to serve his remaining 14 and a half years. 'The violence that Babudar exhibited to the employees of the Tulsa Teacher Credit Union was abhorrent,' Kunzweiler said in the release. 'He is a serial robber who traumatized these victims and numerous other victims across this country.' Babudar, famous for his Chiefs-themed wolf costume reminiscent of the team's mascot K.C. Wolf, became a high-profile figure on social media and was a regular presence at Chiefs games from 2018 through 2021, prior to his arrest on the robbery charges. On December 16, 2022, Babudar robbed the Tulsa Teachers Credit Union in Bixby wearing a mask and armed with a gun, according to the release. He used his firearm, later determined to be a BB gun, to demand that bank employees retrieve money from the safe. Babudar left once he had the money, but was quickly apprehended by Bixby police, the release says. Less than two months after his arrest, Babudar's bond was lowered. He bonded out of jail on Feb. 8, 2023, and was ordered to wear an ankle monitor. Reports show Babudar removed his ankle monitor on March 25, 2023, the release says. Babudar did not appear for a March 27 court date and was apprehended by federal authorities in July 2023 in California. Federal prosecutors have said Babudar stole nearly $850,000 from banks and credit unions during a 16-month stretch, and in many of the robberies, brandished what appeared to be a gun. As part of his plea in his federal case, Babudar admitted to robberies or attempted robberies in Clive, Iowa; Bixby, Oklahoma; Omaha, Nebraska; West Des Moines, Iowa; Nashville, Tennessee; Savage, Minnesota; Apple Valley, Minnesota; Papillion, Nebraska; Sparks, Nevada, and Eldorado Hills, California. The Star's Robert Cronkleton and Nathan Pilling contributed reporting to this story.

Super Bowl season bringing business to local bakeries
Much like the Super Bowl game this Sunday, local bakeries are hoping for a sellout on desserts as fans look to celebrate this weekend. Whipping up Chiefs-themed desserts ahead of this Sunday's Big game has become a common theme for Country Cookie and Love & Frosting Bakeshop in St. Joseph. 'We've been very beneficial over the last five years,' said Jackie Beers, store manager at Country Cookie. 'They've continued to press this far so we're a little nervous about it if a Super Bowl doesn't ever happen for them.' While Super Bowl season continues to bring success to the local bakery, it finds itself running out of treats before the season even begins. 'We actually start our spirit for the Chiefs clear back in August when training camp starts,' Beers said. 'So, we always make it a big deal to have Chief-themed items because we get so many people from out of state that come in town just for the pre-season.' The Chiefs-colored sprinkle cookies are the most popular themed item, but they offer a variety of other decorated cookies and cakes, including football-decorated cookies, cookies adorned with Travis Kelce's jersey, and even Taylor Swift-inspired cookies reading 'in our champion era.' 'It's just something cute and fun to have at all the game day celebrations,' Beers said. 'Kind of a hometown pride thing.' Business is swinging right in for love and frosting bakeshop as well. 'Every year, we kind of learn what our customers are really wanting, which is more of the custom decorated chiefs-themed items,' said Niki Longers, owner of Love & Frosting Bakeshop. Longers says they're expecting an influx of orders this year, so the business is staying prepared with not only Kansas City Chief sweets but also snacks for those who prefer a salty taste—their game day 'snack mix.' While businesses are staying prepared, they're expecting to sell a high number of treats on Saturday just before Super Bowl Sunday, so fans should plan to buy their treats soon.

Kansas City restaurants dish up tastes of victory as Chiefs continue title run
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs-themed goodies are on the menu at restaurants around the Kansas City area, and one of them believes it might have an eye into the franchise's football future. Restaurants like McClain's Bakery in Waldo are feeling Chiefs spirit just like everyone else. McClain's cakes, and the popular family cookie box, have a Chiefs theme right now, and customers want their goodies dressed in red and gold. Toxic chemicals found in Henry County soil, Evergy accused in lawsuit 'From a business standpoint, this is an extremely exciting time of the year,' Cassidy Garr, McClain's spokesperson, said. 'Playoffs and the Chiefs have become their own holiday for businesses like ours.' The Chiefs seek a three-peat as Super Bowl champs, and that's inspired Joe Zwillenberg and his staff at The Westport Flea Market to offer their popular cheeseburgers at only $3 apiece. The Flea Market started the special in 2014 when the Kansas City Royals returned to the postseason for the first time in decades. 'It just seems to be good luck. This is the third year in a row we've been doing this. The place is going to get busy. Everybody's going to be in a good mood. For two weeks, we're going to be giving the best burger in Kansas City for three bucks,' Zwillenberg said. And on Westport Road, well-dressed donuts come with a unique T-shirt offer from Donutology. The shirt is designed by Charlie Hustle, and if the Chiefs win it all, the shirt entitles the wearer to a free dozen donuts once per week. 'It's fun because donuts are about community. All of these business operators agree this is a golden era in Kansas City, and businesses who take advantage of it have a means of filling the post-holiday season doldrums — while cheering on the Chiefs.
