From Bekenu to the books: Porwosujarwati's legacy recognised in ‘Sarawak Women Book'

MIRI (Aug 2): Being featured in the 'Sarawak Women Book 2025 – Sarawak Women Creating Legacies' is something that local entrepreneur Porwosujarwati Suhaimi hails as 'a dream coming true'. The 12th edition of the book was launched in conjunction with the Women's Day 2025 celebration on Thursday by State Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah in Kuching. Porwosujarwati was among 27 outstanding women representing diverse professional backgrounds such as education, sports, public service and entrepreneurship. The 40-year-old entrepreneur runs a successful duck farming and vegetable cultivation venture under the brand 'Watiza Agrofarm', based at Jalan Kampung Opak in Bekenu, Sibuti near here. Watiza Agrofarm is among the notable Bumiputera-owned enterprises producing and distributing salted eggs that meet growing market demands in Bekenu and Miri. In addition to duck farming, Porwosujarwati's operations include cultivating a wide range of vegetables and herbs including chillies, eggplants, okras, cucumbers, pumpkins, baby corns, jackfruit, lemongrass, turmeric, galangal, and also taro. Among her key achievements this year was winning a business grant under the Rural Business Challenge (RBC) 2.0, where she was the sole recipient from Sarawak to be awarded the grant by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW). 'I would like to share this joy with everyone who has stood by me through the ups and downs,' said Porwosujarwati, hailing the award as 'a testament to what determination, hard work, and support could achieve'. 'This award proves that with effort, prayer, and support, nothing is impossible. Don't be afraid to dream big. Minister sees appointment of first woman chief judge of Sabah, Sarawak as ‘legacy'
KUCHING (July 30): The appointment of Sarawak-born Datuk Azizah Nawawi as the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak is creating a legacy and also a benchmark of excellence for others to follow. This was highlighted by the Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah in her congratulatory message yesterday. 'On behalf of the state government and the women of Sarawak, I would like to congratulate the new Chief Justice of High Court of Sabah and Sarawak, the first woman to hold the position. 'She makes us proud, and with such achievement, she is creating a legacy, a benchmark of excellence for others to follow,' said Fatimah, also Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Women chief. Azizah, born in Sibu on Jan 9, 1962. She graduated with a degree in law from the University of Otago, New Zealand. The 63-year-old Azizah took over the post from fellow Sibu native, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, who retired on July 24. On Monday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the instrument of appointment to Azizah during the ceremony held at Istana Negara, Kuala Lumpur. Also appointed was Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, 62, as the Chief Justice of Malaysia. Both Wan Ahmad Farid and Azizah were former Court of Appeal judges prior to their respective promotions. His Majesty also presented instruments of appointment to Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as the President of the Court of Appeal, followed by the appointment of eight Court of Appeal Judges and 14 High Court Judges. Wan Ahmad Farid has been appointed as the 17th Chief Justice of Malaysia, succeeding Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired on July 2. Abu Bakar, 63, meanwhile, is filling the vacancy of President of the Court of Appeal following the retirement of Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim on July 3.

Minister unhappy over Sarawak posting highest number of adolescent vape users

KUCHING (June 23): Sarawak has the highest vape users among youngsters aged 13 to 17 years in Malaysia, based on the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) undertaken in 2022, which recorded prevalence rate of 20.3 per cent, or 39,608 individuals. We're on top of the list, but not for a good reason. 'The prevalence rate of vape use among Sarawakianz aged 15 years and above has also shown an increase. The NHMS report showed an increase in the prevalence rate of vape use from 4.5 per cent in 2019 to 7.3 per cent in 2023,' she said at the state-level 'National Anti-Drugs Day 2025' at Detar Putra of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) on Saturday evening. In this regard, she said her ministry was ready to bring this issue up at the Sarawak Cabinet meeting in seeking direction on the next step of action. She also pointed out that there had been cases of illegal substance being added to vapes, with police statistics in 2023 reporting nine cases of illegal vape substances in Sarawak. 'We must do something to avoid this issue from becoming out of hand,' she stressed. On another matter, Fatimah said Sarawak recorded a total of 4,602 arrests involving various drug-related offences from January to April this year. 'What is worrying is the increase in relapse cases among drug addicts in Sarawak, where the number of recorded cases jumped by 120 per cent from 319 cases (last year) to 703 cases.' She added out of the 4,602 arrests, 2,804 involved youths – up from 1,392 youths' arrests recorded last year. 'This group (youths) are of the future of the state and the country. 'What's clear now is that prevention efforts must start earlier, at the school level with strong support from the teachers and parents,' she pointed out.
