Minister unhappy over Sarawak posting highest number of adolescent vape users
KUCHING (June 23): Sarawak has the highest vape users among youngsters aged 13 to 17 years in Malaysia, based on the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) undertaken in 2022, which recorded prevalence rate of 20.3 per cent, or 39,608 individuals.
To Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, this is not something to be proud of.
'This is not good. We're on top of the list, but not for a good reason.
'The prevalence rate of vape use among Sarawakianz aged 15 years and above has also shown an increase. The NHMS report showed an increase in the prevalence rate of vape use from 4.5 per cent in 2019 to 7.3 per cent in 2023,' she said at the state-level 'National Anti-Drugs Day 2025' at Detar Putra of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) on Saturday evening.
In this regard, she said her ministry was ready to bring this issue up at the Sarawak Cabinet meeting in seeking direction on the next step of action.
She also pointed out that there had been cases of illegal substance being added to vapes, with police statistics in 2023 reporting nine cases of illegal vape substances in Sarawak.
'We must do something to avoid this issue from becoming out of hand,' she stressed.
On another matter, Fatimah said Sarawak recorded a total of 4,602 arrests involving various drug-related offences from January to April this year.
'What is worrying is the increase in relapse cases among drug addicts in Sarawak, where the number of recorded cases jumped by 120 per cent from 319 cases (last year) to 703 cases.'
She added out of the 4,602 arrests, 2,804 involved youths – up from 1,392 youths' arrests recorded last year.
'This group (youths) are of the future of the state and the country.
'What's clear now is that prevention efforts must start earlier, at the school level with strong support from the teachers and parents,' she pointed out.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government should consider providing free healthy meals to children up to the age of three to combat malnutrition and stunting, says an opposition Member of Parliament. Citing the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2024, Datuk Dr Alias Razak (PN-Kuala Nerus) said that 16.1 per cent of Malaysian children under five suffered from stunting, while over 16 per cent of schoolchildren were obese. He added that nearly 95 per cent of children did not consume sufficient fruits and vegetables, according to the survey. "This suggests the issue is not a lack of food, but rather an unbalanced diet. It may also be linked to the rising cost of living, which is not matched by income levels," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Alias said that when household income is limited, the cheapest food is naturally chosen, regardless of its nutritional value. This situation is exacerbated by the sales and service tax (SST) on imported fruits, making healthy options more expensive than unhealthy snacks high in sugar, salt, and fat, he added. Following this, he urged the government to consider providing healthy food assistance to all children from birth to three years old, or within the critical first 1,000 days, to prevent malnutrition and provide vital support. "As an effective intervention to address this issue, is the government considering providing healthy food assistance? The cost of treating complications from malnutrition and stunting is far greater than supplying free healthy meals," he said. Alias also cited a study indicating that providing free prepared meals at RM150 per child during the first 1,000 days would cost RM2.418 billion annually, compared to RM34.09 billion per year spent treating stunting and its complications.

New strategy needed to fight drug abuse in Malaysia says Ahmad Zahid
PUTRAJAYA: A new and unconventional strategy is essential to address the growing drug abuse crisis in Malaysia, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He emphasised the urgent need for a revised approach due to the alarming rise in synthetic drug use and social media-driven distribution. 'The government has invested over RM50 billion in prevention, enforcement, and treatment, yet drug abuse continues to escalate,' he said. 'We must acknowledge this failure and unite to minimise drug abuse as much as possible,' he added during his speech at the 46th general assembly of the Malaysian Anti-Drug Association (Pemadam). Ahmad Zahid highlighted a National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) report revealing that 68 percent of drug abusers are young adults aged 19 to 39, including professionals. 'This trend threatens national productivity and the future workforce critical for economic growth,' he warned. He urged enforcement agencies and Pemadam to adopt interactive communication methods rather than traditional awareness campaigns. 'Instead of just lecturing, we must listen and empathise with the youth,' he said. 'Digital engagement is key—old methods like brochures and talks are no longer sufficient,' he stressed. The Deputy PM proposed establishing digital communication teams in every state to enhance outreach efforts. He also recommended developing an integrated information portal and a smart application for better accessibility. Fatimah: Ministry to expand outreach programme to 13 more zones following successful pilot in Sibu
Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah SIBU (Aug 11): The Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development will expand its outreach programme to another 13 zones across Sarawak in an effort to ensure is left behind, said minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah. She said this would bridge the gap between government departments and the community, bringing services directly to the people. 'Outreach programmes organised by the Sarawak government are effective in delivering essential services, although there is still room for improvement. 'We will tailor each programme according to the people's needs. We have a very people-centred and caring government. Our focus is to develop Sarawak and make our people prosperous,' she said after closing a pilot two-day outreach programme at the Sibu Islamic Complex yesterday. She added that increased state revenue has been channelled back to the people through various programmes, including those under her ministry Fatimah noted that the event here had not only gathered feedback from participating agencies but also from the public to help improve service delivery. 'In fact, we received 300 applications for the Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) and 50 applications for the Senior Citizen Health Benefit (SCHB) through the programme. 'This shows how valuable it (outreach programme) is, as people do not have to travel to Welfare Department offices to apply,' she said. Successful applicants, she added, were able to receive their KGC cards on the spot. The Sibu programme catered to residents from eight state constituencies in the central zone, namely Nangka, Machan, Ngemah, Pelawan, Bukit Assek, Tamin, Dudong, and Bawang Assan, under the theme 'Kamek Prihatin, Kitak Penting' (We Care, You Matter). The event involved multiple agencies, including the Welfare Department, National Registration Department, National Population and Family Development Board, Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission, Fire and Rescue Department, Social Security Organisation, and Sarawak Women and Family Department. The initiative aims to ensure the state government's plans, policies, and programmes reach grassroots leaders, women's representatives, community heads, and residents, at longhouses, settlements and villages. During the event, Fatimah presented KGC cards, compassionate assistance benefits, disability cards, and aid for victims of the recent Kampung Hilir fire. Present were Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, who is Nangka assemblyman; Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, who is Pelawan assemblyman; Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong; and Lingga assemblywoman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor.
