Q: After a decade break between Vengo and Vida, you appear to be entering a very productive period of new music releases. Are we hearing material written in the 2014 to 2024 period, or is it all new for Serpiente de Madera? A: It has been a long time between albums. But everything from Vida onward has been new material that I've been writing specifically for each release. I don't release older material. Q: The title of the new EP reflects the Chinese horoscope Year of the Yin Wood Snake, which is often associated with commercial opportunities. But the music seems more engaged in exploring spiritual development. Thoughts? A: Totally. The snake is all about adapting and mutating into new skin and identity, reflecting what's going on around us. Wood is more about balance and calm, things like family and friends. Perhaps because of where I am in life, that is something I am thinking of and why I identified with the Chinese horoscope for the new EP. Do you see that as a vital part of your art, especially given world affairs in 2025? A: Everything in life is political. So I think that music can make a difference, more now with what is going on in the world today with art. I think it's very important to keep the political content around what we do and in all the relationships we have with other human beings in mind and that's what I do in my life how I adapt myself in the world. Q: What led to you deciding to work with Hordatoj for the new EP after taking a break from working with him? A: The two of us are great friends and very close and decided to make the EP because of those reasons. As our past history on 1977 proved, his beats and boom-bap against my lyrics comes very naturally. Q: This is your Chan Centre debut. Are you excited about coming to Vancouver? A: I actually played Vancouver before at a different event. It was a very long time ago, when one of my cousins lived there, and I remember it being very beautiful. I'm excited and anxious in a good way, to be returning to Canada. It's a country that has always interested me. sderdeyn@ Read More News Vancouver Canucks Food Federal Election Vancouver Whitecaps
