Joanna Gaines Shares Sentimental Video of Her Family Before 2 of Her Kids Head to College
Joanna Gaines is just like Us moms who are sending their kids off to college. The Magnolia Network star and cofounder posted a sentimental video via Instagram on Saturday, August 9, as her family enjoyed their 'last dinner' before her son Drake, 20, goes back to school and her daughter Ella, 18, heads out for her freshman year. Joanna, 47, shares five children with husband Chip Gaines, including sons Duke, 17, and Crew, 7, and daughter Emmie, 15. 'Gulp,' Joanna wrote alongside the reel. 'Last dinner together before our oldest heads back to college and our second is about to leave home for her freshman year. Thankful for the group hug and all the puppies to help me work through my wide range of emotions.' Chip and Joanna Gaines' Family Album Through the Years She added, 'And also Crew's motor bike, it made me feel like a kid again ☺️ I love you kids so much.' In the video, set to the touching lyrics of Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide,' the Gaineses enjoyed each other's company at their farm. Joanna and Chip, 50, could be seen making homemade pizzas in a brick oven before the family sat down at the dinner table. They then shared a group hug with their mom outside in the yard, dogs included, before Joanna hopped on a kids' motor bike for a joy ride. In November 2023, Joanna and Chip opened up about what it was like to send their firstborn child off to school when they still had a preschooler at home. "I think the greatest gift of having a kid go off to college and having a 5-year-old toddler, is kind of that perspective of it's not here forever. Don't take it for granted, and cherish these moments,' Joanna told People at the time. Chip added, 'Something about Drakey going off to college really does make you shift your attention to Crew who's on the tail end of all this. And you're kind of living very intentionally because you know that — which is so hard to believe when you're holding a 1-year-old — 'Oh, this time's going to go by quickly.'' Joanna Gaines Enjoys Late-Night Baking with Daughter Ella Joanna and Chip recently enjoyed a vacation to Mexico with all of their kids to bond and connect as a family. "Truth is, we're all homebodies,' Joanna told People last month. 'But as our kids get older, I've learned what a gift it is to get away and have that intentional time as a family. Being present is what we're after — so we limit phones, pick a few games or hikes that everyone is excited about, eat together for every meal and toss the schedule out the window.' Joanna and Chip hosted HGTV's Fixer Upper from 2013 to 2018 before fully embracing their own brand, Magnolia. The couple has since launched a lifestyle magazine, Magnolia Journal, a collection of home decor items sold at Target, Hearth & Hand and the Magnolia Network. Fixer Upper spinoffs have popped up on the network, as well as Joanna's cooking show Magnolia Table and one-room renovation series Mini Reni. Solve the daily Crossword

HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines candidly detail the struggles in their 22-year marriage
Chip and Joanna Gaines have been married for over two decades - but that doesn't mean they haven't had their fair share of ups and downs. The HGTV stars - who share five children - recently opened up about their private life and how they have dealt with the challenges of marriage. Joanna, 47, revealed that they had 'non-negotiables from day one,' speaking on how to balance their fame, family and relationship. Joanna referenced the store she and Chip, 50, owned - which was called The Little Shop on Bosque and opened in the early 2000s - at the start of their marriage. However, the mom-of-five said even though it was scary, she could see the bright side even if they 'were struggling for the first 12 years of marriage.' 'Like every Friday it was like, "Well, is this when we close our doors [of The Little Shop on Bosque]?"' she explained on the Stronger Podcast with Don Saladino. 'Every day we showed up, it was like, "Well, if this all goes away, we still have each other,"' the Fixer Upper star said passionately. She explained that sums up the 'core and foundation' of who they are. Chip said he would be fine with stepping away from the spotlight, as long as the most important thing - his wife and kids - were still there 'Every decision we make, we say, "How will this affect this?"' the renovation star shared. Joanna credited her and Chip's decision to prioritize each other as helping them navigate fame whilst raising a family. Chip agreed, adding he would be fine with stepping away from the spotlight, as long as the most important thing - his wife and kids - were still there. 'As I think about fame and success and money in comparison to my marriage and my family… [If] all of this would instantly go away, and my wife and my kids would be back on the farm, raising animals,' the doting dad mused during the interview. 'But Jo and I, we believe we can have our cake and eat it too in the sense that I can be successful and I can have a healthy marriage and family,' he added. Joanna also shared the new endeavor the two are embarking on - their wellness journey. 'At this stage in our life, what we're trying to figure out is: we've got family, we've got business, like that's our thing... but now this wellness and health and working out, that is a new thing for us that we're trying to figure out,' she shared. Joanna and Chip have been married since 2003 and share five children: Drake, 20, Ella, 18, Duke, 17, Emmie, 15, and Crew, seven. Last month, the couple faced backlash from conservative Christians for their 'unbiblical' casting on their new reality show. The pair were slammed by some critics for their new series, Back to the Frontier, which they serve as the executive producers of. The show, which airs on the Magnolia Network, drops three families near the Canadian Rockies and forces them to live like it is the 1880s for eight weeks. The families have no access to modern technology, no electricity or running water, and must harvest all their own food and tend to livestock. While the show sounds like must-see TV for Chip and Joanna's target audience, some viewers have expressed outrage over the inclusion of a gay couple on the cast. Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs, a same-sex couple, and their children are one of three families featured on the show. They both took to social media to defend the Gaines', with Hanna posting a screenshot of a news article with the headline, 'Conservative Christians rage at reality show for letting gay people on,' and explained why he believes families like his should be shown on TV. Riggs also shared a post thanking Chip and Joanna for casting them and standing by their decision to do so — even though nearly a decade ago, it was revealed that the Fixer Upper stars attend an Evangelical church, which believes 'homosexuality is a sin.'

Chip & Joanna Gaines Share Rare Comment About Struggling During Their Marriage
Chip & Joanna Gaines Share Rare Comment About Struggling During Their Marriage originally appeared on Parade. Home design experts are opening up about their 22-year-long marriage. Swooon Magazine reported that the couple discussed how they navigated challenges in their relationship during a July 2025 interview on the Stronger Podcast. Joanna shared that she and her husband had "non-negotiables from day one" even when they "were struggling for the first 12 years of [their] marriage." She referenced that she and Chip had a shop called The Little Shop on Bosque, which opened 10 years before their first HGTV show, Fixer Upper, premiered in 2013. Joanna, who shares five children with Chip, explained that having a business at the start of their marriage was financially and emotionally stressful. "Like every Friday was like, 'Well, is this when we close our doors [of The Little Shop on Bosque]?' Every day we showed up, it was like, 'Well, if this all goes away, we still have each other,'" said Joanna. Joanna then said her and Chip's decision to prioritize each other has been helpful as they've navigated fame while raising a family. "So that was the core and the foundation of who we are, who we were, and then now we have these five babies," said the Mini Reni star. "Every decision we make, we say, 'How will this affect this?'" Chip also said he would be fine with stepping away from the spotlight, as long as his family was by his side. 'As I think about fame and success and money in comparison to my marriage and my family… [If] all of this would instantly go away, and my wife and my kids would be back on the farm, raising animals, we'd be a part of the FFA," said Chip during the podcast interview. "Who knows what would happen next? But Jo and I, we believe we can have our cake and eat it too in the sense that I can be successful and I can have a healthy marriage and family.' Joanna shared how they've kept the romance alive in their relationship during a March 2025 interview with Us Weekly. She said she and her husband have recently strengthened their bond by taking the time to exercise together, either at their home gym or at dance classes. 'There's really no shortage of us doing things together. But what I've loved most about this new rhythm of working out together is that it's new and different for us, but it's also been interesting to see that the way we show up for each other in our little garage gym is the same way we always have at the office, or with a new project," said Joanna to Us Weekly. Chip and Joanna Gaines try something new in their marriage after 25 years
Chip and Joanna Gaines have stepped up their fitness game. During a recent appearance on the "Stronger" podcast hosted by Don Saladino, the couple discussed how they started working out together, with Joanna sharing that it's "crazy" that they had "known each other for almost 25 years" and had "never once worked out together." "I think I started thinking, 'How in the world have we never worked out?' We never even talked about it. I mean, he trained for a marathon, but I was pregnant," she said. "We have never talked about 'Oh, let's do this fitness thing together. Let's do this.' We've never had that conversation." Chip echoed his wife's statements, adding that in their 25 years together, "you think at some point that thought would have been introduced to our ecosystem." "I would take on an assignment, whatever the assignment would be, and same with you, then I would be like, 'I want to do that, let's do that together,' but … it was my thing, and you supported me through the whole thing," he said. "I remember we had to modify the food that I was eating, or I tweaked my ankle …and you were so helpful through the whole thing, but it's not like we started going on long jogs together." It all changed when Joanna reached out to Saladino, who, aside from podcasting, is also known for his work as a fitness entrepreneur and coach who has trained celebrities and athletes. Joanna recalled knowing she needed to invest more time in her wellness routine, and that she "needed like a kick in the butt" to get her going. "This year, seeing our parents, especially like my dad, he just actually had a knee surgery, knee replacement surgery on Friday, a hip replacement a couple of months before," she said. "Just watching my parents, I keep thinking, 'OK, I'm now at the age where I need to choose.' It's no longer 'Oh, I hope I'm healthy for a long time,' I actually have to start doing something actively and intentionally." The former HGTV star first shared that she and her husband began working out with Saladino in a January 2025 Instagram post which featured a video of her doing push-ups and other exercises in the gym. In the caption, Joanna shared that she and Chip made the decision to start working out together "for the first time in our marriage" back in September. She recalled not being able to do even one push-up on the first day due to a back injury she sustained while in college. "A few months in and I've never felt stronger," she wrote. "Today I did FIFTY push-ups! So I'm celebrating and putting this out there... I've let time, age, injury, and busyness be my excuse of why not to workout. I'm finally over the 'it's too hard' hump and I'm ready to go! Who's with me?!" When speaking with Saladino on the podcast, the two opened up about how the most difficult part of exercising as an adult is comparing yourself to your younger self. Joanna admitted to being motivated by the idea of getting back to the way she looked as a teenager, but that working with Saladino has helped her focus on "forward motion." Chip agreed the comparison to his younger self can be challenging, especially when struggling to do something that used to be easy for him. "I was just naturally gifted in all these things, and once it became a challenge to do them, I got worse and worse at it, which is not great, because if you can only do it when it comes easy to you then it's not really a thing. It's not really a gift or a talent. It's when it's hard that you then still show up," he said.

Chip and Joanna Gaines' Magnolia Network backlash puts home renovation star in hot seat
The backlash towards Chip and Joanna Gaines' new Magnolia Network reality series "Back to the Frontier" has put a spotlight on the couple's sprawling lifestyle empire. The couple was criticized last weekend after Chip promoted the new series, which features three families living like pioneers. People flooded his post promoting the show with frustrations over a same-sex couple being cast as one of three couples on the reality series. Reverend Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, called the casting decision "very disappointing." "While we are to love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God's Word," he wrote on social media. "His Word is absolute truth. God loves us, and His design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin." Chip was quick to respond to the criticism, writing on X: "Talk, ask qustns [sic], listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never It's a sad sunday when 'non believers' have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian." The Gaines first gained fame more than 10 years ago when they were cast on the HGTV series "Fixer Upper" in 2013, which showed the couple revitalizing dilapidated homes through their Magnolia Homes business in Waco, Texas. After five seasons, they decided to leave the show, and then signed with Discovery + and started the Magnolia Network in 2022. Along with the network, the couple also have the five-acre Magnolia Market at the Silos, which includes the shops at the Silos, the Silos Baking Co. bakery, the Magnolia Press coffee shop, and they also own the Magnolia Table restaurant several miles away. They also own the Magnolia Journal magazine, have written a series of lifestyle books, including Joanna's "Home Body" and Chip's "No Pain, No Gaines," they have their own Magnolia Home, furniture and accessories line, and a home line created by Joanna called Hearth and Hand for Target. The couple also opened a boutique hotel, Hotel 1928, in 2023, after renovating a historic hotel in Waco with 33 rooms. The pair also offer vacation rentals in Waco, including Hillcrest Estate and Hillcrest Cottage, the original carriage house for the estate. "TV shows impact the culture, but Chip and Jo impact people's lives," Discovery CEO David Zaslav told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021. "They provide something very rare in America today: a sunshiny hopefulness that you can make things with your own two hands and your life will be better for it."
