Chip and Joanna Gaines' Magnolia Network backlash puts home renovation star in hot seat
The couple was criticized last weekend after Chip promoted the new series, which features three families living like pioneers.
People flooded his post promoting the show with frustrations over a same-sex couple being cast as one of three couples on the reality series.
Reverend Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, called the casting decision "very disappointing."
"While we are to love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God's Word," he wrote on social media. "His Word is absolute truth. God loves us, and His design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin."
Chip was quick to respond to the criticism, writing on X: "Talk, ask qustns [sic], listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never It's a sad sunday when 'non believers' have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian."
The Gaines first gained fame more than 10 years ago when they were cast on the HGTV series "Fixer Upper" in 2013, which showed the couple revitalizing dilapidated homes through their Magnolia Homes business in Waco, Texas.
After five seasons, they decided to leave the show, and then signed with Discovery + and started the Magnolia Network in 2022.
Along with the network, the couple also have the five-acre Magnolia Market at the Silos, which includes the shops at the Silos, the Silos Baking Co. bakery, the Magnolia Press coffee shop, and they also own the Magnolia Table restaurant several miles away.
They also own the Magnolia Journal magazine, have written a series of lifestyle books, including Joanna's "Home Body" and Chip's "No Pain, No Gaines," they have their own Magnolia Home, furniture and accessories line, and a home line created by Joanna called Hearth and Hand for Target.
The couple also opened a boutique hotel, Hotel 1928, in 2023, after renovating a historic hotel in Waco with 33 rooms. The pair also offer vacation rentals in Waco, including Hillcrest Estate and Hillcrest Cottage, the original carriage house for the estate.
"TV shows impact the culture, but Chip and Jo impact people's lives," Discovery CEO David Zaslav told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021. "They provide something very rare in America today: a sunshiny hopefulness that you can make things with your own two hands and your life will be better for it."

California State Fair exhibit gives out cannabis seeds for a penny
Getting freebies is a California State Fair tradition, but this year, there's a new type of sample sparking up interest. Adults entering the California Cannabis Experience exhibit can now get a packet of pot seeds to take home and start their own grow. "We've already given away thousands of seeds," said Embarc co-founder Dustin Moore. "Under California law, we have to sell them for a penny to be compliant." Organizers hope many people will turn this into a budding backyard hobby. "It's important, as we normalize cannabis in a responsible way, to encourage folks to grow at home," Moore said. "We would love nothing more than to have as many people as possible popping these seeds in their backyard and getting some experience with this beautiful plant," said Scott Vasterling, founder of Humboldt Family Farms. Experts say it doesn't take much effort to grow your own ganja. "It's a weed, literally. That's why they call it weed, so growing cannabis is about as simple as keeping a weed alive in your backyard. Sun, water, and fertilizer, and a little bit of love. That's all it takes," Moore said. Cannabis cultivation is still illegal under federal law, but in California, up to six plants are permitted for personal use, although some places don't allow them to be grown outdoors. The state fair already presents Golden Bear awards for California's best cannabis, and people picking up seeds this year could be next year's winners in a new category for home growers. "We'll have the same opportunity to grow their cannabis at home and compete alongside the best farmers in the state of California," Moore said. Organizers expect to hand out 15,000 seeds at the fair this year, which come from the Humboldt Seed Company in Northern California.

Pete Davidson and Elsie Hewitt expecting first child
Pete Davidson is going to be a dad. On Wednesday, editors at TMZ reported that the Saturday Night Live comedian and his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, were expecting their first child. A source told the outlet that Elsie is due to give birth in the winter. And a few hours later, the model-actress took to Instagram to confirm the news. "Welp now everyone knows we had sex," she wrote alongside a slideshow of photos of the couple. The 29-year-old also included a short clip showing her smiling during an ultrasound appointment as well as a close-up of a sonogram image. Pete, 31, and Elsie were first linked in March and reportedly moved in together two months later. And while The King of Staten Island actor has not yet commented on the baby news, an insider divulged to People that he is very excited to become a father. "They're both very nurturing people and are very, very happy together and to be starting a family," they shared with the publication. "They've been sharing privately with loved ones, and it's a really sweet time after everything Pete has overcome. He's so excited. He's always wanted to be a dad." Back in 2022, Pete also opened up about his desire to have a family one day. "My favourite thing ever, which I'm yet to achieve, is I wanna have a kid," he stated during an appearance on Kevin Hart's talk show, Hart to Heart. "It's super corny, but it would be so fun to dress up a little dude. I'm so excited for that chapter, so that's kind of what I'm just preparing for now, is trying to be like good as a dude and develop and get better, so when that happens, it's just easier."
