Reports: Liverpool and Leverkusen nearing agreement on Wirtz fee

Germany's Florian Wirtz looks dejected after the UEFA Nations League semi final soccer match between Germany and Portugal at Allianz Arena. Christian Charisius/dpa Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly getting closer to an agreement on the sale of Florian Wirtz from Germany to the Premier League champions. Multiple news reports and England and Germany said that the clubs had made progress on the transfer fee during talks on Friday. Advertisement England's Sky TV said that Liverpool have made a third offer of around €134 million ($153 million), including add-ons, for the 22-year-old Germany international playmaker. However, that is still below Leverkusen's asking price of €150 million. Wirtz has a contract until 2027 at last year's Bundesliga champions. Kicker sports magazine said that Leverkusen rejected two previous Liverpool offers of €115 and €130, including add-ons. Wirtz has reportedly agreed to join Liverpool, turning down German champions Bayern Munich who are also interested.

South America proposes 64-team World Cup just for 2030

The FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy is on display ahead of the draw ceremony for the 2026 World Cup Europe qualifiers. South American football confederation CONMEBOL wants the centenary World Cup in 2030 to have 64 teams for the first and only time. Christian Charisius/dpa South American football confederation CONMEBOL wants the centenary World Cup in 2030 to have 64 teams for the first and only time. Spain, Portugal and Morocco have already been named as main hosts, but Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay will hold a handful of matches in the competition as it is the 100-year anniversary of the first men's World Cup in Uruguay. Advertisement Given the large number of hosts, CONMEBOL thinks it is the perfect opportunity for 64 teams, with a record 48 competing in the United Satates, Canada and Mexico in 2026. "We are convinced that the centenary celebration will be unique because you only turn 100 once. That is why we propose celebrating this anniversary with 64 teams across three continents simultaneously," confederation president Alejandro Domínguez said during a CONMEBOL meeting on Thursday. Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan football association, recently presented a proposal during a FIFA Council meeting to expand the tournament to 64 teams.

Moenchengladbach's Ko Itakura (R) scores his side's first goal during the German Bundesliga soccer match between FC St. Pauli and Borussia Moenchengladbach at the Millerntor Stadium. Christian Charisius/dpa Borussia Mönchengladbach lost some precious points in the fight for Champions League qualification in a late 1-1 draw at St Pauli Hamburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday. However, the hosts got their deserved equalizer in the 85th minute thanks to Oladapo Afolayan, who smashed a long-range effort between the posts. Gladbach dropped to sixth, two points behind Mainz and in the qualification spot for the Conference League. St Pauli remained 15th and four points above the relegation zone. On Friday, leaders Bayern Munich defeated Augsburg 3-1, but champions Bayer Leverkusen restored the six-point gap with a last-minute 1-0 win at Heidenhiem. (Christian Charisius/dpa via AP) HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Goalkeeper Tiago Pereira Cardoso's dream start to life in the Bundesliga hit a snag Sunday as he conceded his first goal in Borussia Moenchengladbach's 1-1 draw with St. Pauli. Injuries and other issues affecting regular goalkeepers Moritz Nicolas and Jonas Omlin have given the Luxembourg keeper a surprise starting spot for Champions League-chasing Gladbach over the last month. Advertisement One day before his 19th birthday, Cardoso was on course for his fourth game without conceding a goal Sunday – and his fourth win with Gladbach – until Dapo Afolayan hit a fierce shot from long range in the 85th minute. Cardoso leaped at full stretch but couldn't get a hand to it. Gladbach had been leading through a header from defender Ko Itakura. The draw is a setback for Gladbach, which stays sixth in the Bundesliga. It's two points off Mainz in fourth, the last of the Champions League qualification spots. St. Pauli is 15th in the 18-team league. Union Berlin hosts Wolfsburg later Sunday. ___ AP soccer:
