Tree crashes into home in Upper Darby during storm, trapping woman inside Tree crashes into home in Upper Darby during storm, trapping woman inside Tree crashes into home in Upper Darby during storm, trapping woman inside An Upper Darby woman is recovering from injuries she sustained Thursday after severe storms caused a tree to topple over and slam into her house while she was inside. When Upper Darby firefighters arrived at the house along Bond Avenue around 5:30 p.m., they found the tree had pinned the woman down around her legs Christopher Audie Murphy, an Army veteran who lives across the street, ran over to help after hearing the cracking of the tree. When he arrived, he recalled lifting up a section of the roof that caved in near the woman and comforting her as other neighbors and firefighters arrived to help. "My forearms were shot after coming back by the amount of weight that we were holding," Murphy recalled. "It was a whole team of folks." Cara Murphy, his wife, said she and their children are proud of him. "I think my husband is a hero," she said. "Our whole neighborhood rallied around a crazy storm." First responders took the woman to Lankenau Hospital Trauma Center to be evaluated. Neighbors told CBS News Philadelphia that they expect the woman to be OK. Crews started removing the tree's thick trunk and large branches Friday morning.

Democratic lawmakers criticize Israel's defensive strikes against Iran's nuclear sites

Democratic lawmakers are sounding off on the Israel-Iran conflict, criticizing Israel's initial airstrikes Thursday night in the capital of Tehran. Israel launched "Operation Rising Lion," targeting Iran's nuclear and missile infrastructure, and Iran responded with strikes in Tel Aviv, injuring at least five people. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) released a statement Friday calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an "extremist." "The world is more dangerous and unstable as a result of the extremist Netanyahu's government ongoing defiance of international law," Sanders wrote. "First, he uses the starvation of children in Gaza as a tool of war, a barbaric violation of the Geneva Conventions. Now, his illegal unilateral attack on Iran risks a full-blown regional war." Sanders added the strikes "directly contravened" U.S. interests in resolving long-standing tensions over Iran's nuclear program. "Talks were planned for Sunday, but Netanyahu chose instead to launch an attack," Sanders wrote. "The U.S. must make it clear that we will not be dragged into another Netanyahu war. Along with the international community we should do everything possible to prevent an escalation of this conflict and bring the warring parties to the negotiating table." Senate Foreign Relations member Christopher S. Murphy, D-Conn., chimed in on social media Friday morning. "Netanyahu wasn't trying to help diplomacy; he was trying to destroy diplomacy," Murphy wrote. "How do we know? They reportedly targeted and killed Iran's chief negotiator with Trump." Tim Kaine, D-Va., who also serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, added he could not understand why Israel would launch a preemptive strike when a meeting was scheduled between the U.S. and Iran this weekend. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said military aggression is "never the answer." "Israel's alarming decision to launch airstrikes on Iran is a reckless escalation that risks igniting regional violence," Reed wrote. "These strikes threaten not only the lives of innocent civilians but the stability of the entire Middle East and the safety of American citizens and forces. While tensions between Israel and Iran are real and complex, military aggression of this scale is never the answer." By Friday afternoon, some Democrats seemingly changed their tune in response to the counter-attack. Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., slammed Iran's response, calling it "cowardice." "#Israel's strike on #Iran was targeted precisely at senior Iranian military commanders and military sites that posed an existential threat to Israel," Sherman wrote. "The Islamic Republic's response? To target civilian centers in #TelAviv. Unsurprising cowardice from a regime that has spent decades brutalizing its own people." Others evaded the conversation all together. "This is a rapidly evolving situation, and it's critical that the United States works with our allies and avoid steps that will cause further escalation across the region," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., wrote in a statement. "For years, Iran has threatened the safety of Israel and the region, and Israel has an undeniable right to defend itself and its citizens."

Democrats Move to Block Over $3 Billion in Weapons Sales to Qatar and U.A.E.

Congressional Democrats are seeking to block more than $3 billion in proposed weapons sales to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates that were announced during President Trump's visit to the Middle East this week. The Democrats are targeting a $1.9 billion sale to Qatar and $1.6 billion to the Emirates. The packages include Chinook helicopters, armed drones, hundreds of bombs, targeting kits, F-16 aircraft components and other military equipment. The State Department approved the proposed sales and formally notified Congress shortly before Mr. Trump's trip. However, for the sale to the Emirates, the administration bypassed an informal review period that allows senior lawmakers on foreign affairs committees to raise concerns or negotiate changes before full congressional notification. Leading the opposition is Senator Christopher S. Murphy, Democrat of Connecticut and a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, who on Thursday introduced resolutions aimed at blocking the arms sales to both countries. Mr. Murphy questioned the sale to Qatar in light of reports that the country had offered Mr. Trump a $400 million luxury Boeing jet as a gift. 'Unless Qatar rescinds their offer of a 'palace in the sky' or Trump turns it down, I will move to block this arms sale,' Mr. Murphy said in a statement. He also pointed to a $5.5 billion real estate and golf course deal involving the Trump family and a firm affiliated with Qatar's sovereign wealth fund. The project would involve a Trump-branded beachside golf course and luxury villa project in the country. Senators Tim Kaine of Virginia, Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, all Democrats on the Foreign Relations Committee, joined in supporting the resolutions, along with Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. The group also expressed concerns about the Emirates sale, saying it was improperly connected to recent investment by a state-backed Emirati firm into a cryptocurrency business linked to the Trump family. Additionally, the lawmakers criticized the Emirates for its role in the war Sudan. U.S. and U.N. officials have accused the Emirates of supporting the Rapid Support Forces, a Sudanese paramilitary group that the State Department, during the Biden administration, determined committed genocide in Sudan. Mr. Trump's State Department has not made the same determination, though officials have repeatedly condemned the group, including last month after an attack led to the deaths of 300 people and forced hundreds of thousands to flee. 'The U.S. should not be delivering weapons to the U.A.E. as it aids and abets this humanitarian disaster and gross human rights violations,' Mr. Van Hollen said in the statement. 'We must stop this corrupt Trump family crypto-for-arms deal and use our leverage to prevent more suffering in Sudan — and bring its civil war to a peaceful resolution.' A parallel effort is underway in the House. Representatives Gregory W. Meeks of New York, the top Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sara Jacobs of California, the top Democrat on the Africa subcommittee, also introduced resolutions of disapproval targeting the Emirates arms sales. The Arms Export Control Act gives Democrats a procedural tool to force Congress to debate these issues, one of the few maneuvers lawmakers in the minority have at their disposal to control what is brought up for a vote. 'If a foreign government is participating in this kind of nuclear-grade corruption by directly enriching the president and his family,' Mr. Murphy said, 'we are going to force a full Senate debate on that behavior and a vote on their security relationship with the United States.'

Area correctional officers learn how to better their facilities at annual conference

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Correctional officers and law enforcement professionals from all over the northeast gathered at the National Correctional Employees Union Leadership Conference. Man injured in accidental shooting on Pasadena Street in Springfield The NCEU represents approximately 3,000 corrections, communications, and law enforcement professionals in the northeast, and Wednesday, they were back at the birthplace of the union. The National Correctional Employees Union was formed in Springfield, and now includes public employee locals in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Attendees learned techniques to make their facilities a better place to work and serve. 'What we're trying to do is educate, gives tools and resources to our members and leaders in order for them to take it back to their particular groups and move everything forward so that they feel confident in doing their job,' said Christopher Murphy, President of the NCEU. Contributing to that goal was a program of speakers on topics ranging from labor management to de-escalation tactics, how to respond to conflict professionally, rather than act personally. 'In the verbal judo world, we ask people, we tell them why we want them to do things, and we give them options,' said Robert Doherty, Associate Instructor at the Verbal Judo Institute and speaker at Wednesday's conference. 'And those options more often than not steer people towards a positive outcome for all.' Methods learned are keeping local public employees well-equipped to manage not only inmate populations, but larger populations as well.
