Two Pennsylvania State Police officers shot during 911 call response

STORY: :: Two Pennsylvania state troopers were shot during a 911 response, police say :: August 7, 2025 :: New Milford, Pennsylvania :: Christopher L. Paris, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner "The troopers made it out of their vehicle, and they were ambushed from a very good distance away. I don't want to quantify that, pending further investigation, but they were ambushed by several rounds of rifle fire from a position of tactical superiority. Trooper (Joseph) Perechinsky was shot twice in the chest/torso area. Trooper (William) Jenkins was shot twice as well, once in each arm." "Carmine Faino, F A I N O, repeating F A I N O. 61 years of age. Faino is the resident at 20034, so technically he would be a neighbor of Wasko and her live-in longtime boyfriend. However, their properties are separated by several hundred yards. He, we believe at this point, murdered Laurie Wasko, and he was the shooter who shot both of our two troopers, as well as who shot at Carl Lawson." State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris said during a news conference that both troopers and an EMT who crashed when taking evasive action from the shooting were in stable condition. The suspect, identified as Carmine Faino, was shot and killed. Commissioner Paris said Faino killed his neighbor Laurie Wasko, prompting an emergency call from her boyfriend. Previously, Governor Josh Shapiro said he was aware of the shooting and had communicated with State Police Commissioner Paris. The troopers were identified as Joseph Perechinsky and Trooper William Jenkins.

Suspect dead after he ‘ambushed' and shot 2 Pennsylvania state troopers, officials say

A suspect is dead after he shot two Pennsylvania state troopers responding to a call Thursday morning about 45 miles from Scranton, officials said. The troopers, Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, were conducting a welfare check when they were 'immediately fired upon and ambushed,' Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris told reporters Thursday. They were airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment and are in stable condition, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release. The suspect, who has not been named, was shot and killed after he refused to comply with commands, police said. The encounter happened about 11:17 a.m. local time Thursday, near State Route 171 in Thompson Township, police said. The wounded officers were taken to the hospital as state police and local law enforcement set up a perimeter and approached the suspect, they said. 'The suspect was armed with a rifle, refused to comply with commands, and was ultimately shot and killed during the incident,' police said. An EMS worker was also injured on scene while trying to help others, Gov. Josh Shapiro said, but didn't specify how he was injured. The troopers are 'very lucky to be alive,' Paris said, adding that Perechinsky had placed a tourniquet on his fellow trooper to help with their wound. A third trooper responded and was able to get the injured troopers out despite 'their patrol cars being riddled with bullets,' he said. Shapiro spoke while on his way to visit Jenkins after seeing Perechinsky, who the governor said was 'in good spirits.' Shapiro described Perechinsky as 'a real hero in the community,' saying his actions 'exemplifies the absolute best of the Pennsylvania State Police.'

Man dead, troopers in stable condition after shooting in northeastern Pa.

(WBRE/WYOU) — Pennsylvania State Police Colonel Christopher L. Paris and Governor Josh Shapiro held a news conference at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton Thursday afternoon after two state troopers were ambushed and shot while responding to a call in Susquehanna County. Col. Paris identified the troopers who were shot as Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins and said they are in stable condition at this time. The investigation began just after 11:00 a.m. Thursday when the troopers responded to a welfare check where shots were reportedly fired in the area of State Route 171 in Thompson Township, Paris said. When they arrived, a man opened fire on the troopers, according to PSP. 'A coordinated response by multiple Pennsylvania State Police units and local law enforcement agencies led to the establishment of a secure perimeter around the scene. The suspect was armed with a rifle, refused to comply with commands, and was ultimately shot and killed during the incident. There is no remaining threat to the public,' troopers stated in a media release. Paris said that additional details about the initial dispatch will be released at a later time. Trooper Perechinsky was able to place a tourniquet to Trooper Jenkins, and despite both of their patrol cars being riddled with bullets, a third trooper was able to get in and evacuate them and the incident evolved from there,' Paris explained. The scene in Susquehanna County remains very active and information on the suspect will be released at a later time. Paris said Perechinsky and Jenkins are the fifth and sixth troopers that have been shot since January of 2023, with one of those instances being fatal. Pennsylvania State Police are expected to hold a news conference at 6:00 p.m. to pride updated information. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 2 Pennsylvania state troopers have been shot, governor says

Two state troopers were shot Thursday in a rural area of Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro said at an event outside Philadelphia. Shapiro said that in the late morning in Susquehanna County, 'two state troopers were shot. Lori and I are praying for those troopers. I want you to know I've communicated with Col. Paris. He is on the scene." Christopher Paris heads the Pennsylvania State Police. An aide said Shapiro headed to the shooting location in the northeastern Pennsylvania county, which borders New York state. A state police spokesperson, Trooper Logan T. Brouse, said the location was along Route 171 near the village of Thompson. That's about 163 miles (262 kilometers) north of Philadelphia. Angelica Howell, a deputy coroner in Susquehanna County, said shortly after 3 p.m. that she was on her way to where the shooting occurred. Howell said authorities did not indicate whether there was more than one person dead when they asked the coroner's office to respond. Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick said in a social media post that he was monitoring the developing situation. He also expressed empathy for the troopers who were shot. 'Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge,' McCormick posted. U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan said on X that he was 'relieved to hear the troopers involved in today's incident in Thompson Township are expected to be in stable condition.'
