Furious fans slam new Big Bang Theory spin-off based on minor character: 'Worst idea'

CBS' The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, spawning two hit spin-offs, and now a third which is happening on HBO 's Max streaming service, though fans are not pleased. Max issued a series order for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, centering on The Big Bang Theory comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), via press release. The series reunites The Big Bang Theory creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, who co- created the spin-off alongside franchise newcomer Zak Penn (The Avengers). While the original show and spin-offs Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage were more straight comedies, this show will have a heavy dose of sci-fi paired with comedy. The show follows Stuart as he's, 'tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device,' which was created by Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki), which, accidentally starts a 'multiverse Armageddon.' Lauren Lapkus returns as Stuart's girlfriend Denise, alongside geologist Bert (Brian Posehn) and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), who all recurred on the original Big Bang Theory. Lauren Lapkus returns as Stuart's girlfriend Denise, alongside geologist Bert (Brian Posehn) and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), who all recurred on the original Big Bang Theory. They all join Stuart on his journey, along with 'alternate universe versions' of beloved characters from The Big Bang Theory as well, and, 'as the title implies, things don't go well.' Lorre, Prady and Penn will all serve as executive producers on the series from Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and HBO Max Content, stated, 'We're excited to be continuing the legacy of The Big Bang Theory. Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn't be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team.' Lorre added, 'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory, would have loved, hated, and argued about." Penn stated, 'I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from Big Bang Theory would watch.' He added, 'I couldn't resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice. The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people.' Prady said, 'The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I'm certain that joy will come through the screen. Putting characters we loved from The Big Bang Theory into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.' Fans did not hesitate to take to social media to bash the upcoming show, with one calling it the 'worst idea.' Meadow (@gazerspiral) tweeted, 'a 'multiverse big bang theory spinoff' might be the worst idea ive heard yet.' Another fan dubbed @silentjoker45 added, 'Um who asked for this. No seriously big bang theory died a long time ago the finale was nice send off but who asked for this spinoff. at best Stuart was good side character but there no one that can play off him. I respect his actor but unfortunately this will be canceled soon.' Others like @ThatoneQueen3 added, 'And another big bang theory spinoff… hate them bad,' while @mommabiia said, '2025 and Big bang theory is still terrorizing us.' However some were excited for the new show like @BrettYeamans, who said, 'I love The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon and Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage. Stuart Fails To Save The Universe is something I am definitely interested in for sure.' Another fan dubbed @bandaidgirl_nya tweeted, 'new big bang theory show is starting in so excited.' Still, many were upset like @allymazzara, who said, 'Who wants this? Who is asking the studio for this? Sorry but the Big Bang theory was not good enough for 3 spinoffs. I get the Sheldon spinoff whatever but this is insane to me. Like this is really the slop we're prioritizing over new ideas??? oh this might be my final straw.' Others were upset that this show was announced on the same day that HBO Max canceled Duster, such as @enbyez, who tweeted, 'they cancel duster to pick up a bullshit big bang theory spinoff.' Meadow (@gazerspiral) tweeted, 'a 'multiverse big bang theory spinoff' might be the worst idea ive heard yet.' Another fan dubbed @silentjoker45 added, 'Um who asked for this. CBS also greenlit the prequel spin-off Young Sheldon, starring Iain Armitage as the young Sheldon Cooper, a child genius growing up in East Texas. That show - which Parsons also narrated and served as executive producer on - ran for seven seasons from 2017 to 2024, spanning 141 episodes. That spin-off also spawned another - Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage - starring Montana Jordan as Sheldon's older brother Georgie and Emily Osment as Mandy. The 1990s-set series debuted in October and was renewed by CBS for a second season in February.

HBO Max has also officially confirmed plot details for the show for the first time. The logline states: 'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from 'The Big Bang Theory.' As the title implies, things don't go well.' 'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on 'The Big Bang Theory,' would have loved, hated, and argued about,' Lorre said. The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Lorre is under an overall deal. Lorre, Penn, and Prady are also executive producers. 'I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from 'Big Bang Theory' would watch,' Penn said. The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people.' This will now be the fourth show in the 'Big Bang' universe. Aside from the mothership show, which ran for 12 highly-rated seasons on CBS, the prequel 'Young Sheldon' wrapped up its own seven-season run at the broadcast network in May 2024. A spinoff of that show, 'Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage' starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, debuted on CBS on Oct. 17, 2024. This also marks the first series pickup announced since Max officially rebranded (or re-rebranded) itself as HBO Max. 'The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I'm certain that joy will come through the screen,' Prady said. 'Putting characters we loved from 'The Big Bang Theory' into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.' 'Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with 'The Big Bang Theory,' and we can't wait to see the universe continue with this new series,' added Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks. 'With the help of Zak — a masterful storyteller — this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist. We thank our partners HBO Max for joining us on this next adventure.' Speaking at a panel at the Banff World Media Festival in June, Lorre teased that the new show would be quite the departure from 'The Big Bang Theory' in terms of its look onscreen. 'There's a lot of CGI,' Lorre revealed. 'There's a lot of special technical stuff that — you know, for me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different. This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy. And I'm completely out of my element, which is what I wanted. Which is what I was hoping to do, something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.' ‘Big Bang Theory' Spinoff ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' a Go at HBO Max

In keeping with the scientific concept that is its namesake, the universe of The Big Bang Theory keeps expanding. HBO Max has formally greenlit Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a comedy that will center on comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), who had a heavily recurring role on the original CBS series. The show comes from Big Bang Theory co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady and Zak Penn (Free Guy, Beacon 23) — and unlike the original series and its other spinoffs, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, it will feature a heavy dose of sci-fi alongside its comedy. Details Revealed on THE BIG BANG THEORY Spinoff Series STUART FAILS TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE — GeekTyrant

The Big Bang Theory universe is back, and this time, it's Stuart Bloom's turn to (try to) save the day. HBO Max has officially given a series order to Stuart Fails to Save the Universe , a new spinoff that puts the soft-spoken comic book store owner in the very unexpected role of multiverse savior. Kevin Sussman will return as Stuart, and he's leading a wild, sci-fi comedy adventure where the stakes are… everything. According to the official synopsis: 'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. 'Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don't go well.' This is going to be a full-on sci-fi multiverse romp, with Stuart at the helm. That's either genius or madness, and honestly, probably both. One thing is for sure, this isn't the bonkers direction that I thought it would go. The cast includes Big Bang fan-favorites: Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert, and John Ross Bowie as Kripke. The series is produced by Big Bang creator Chuck Lorre , original series co-creator Bill Prady, and Ready Player One writer Zak Penn. Prady shared his enthusiasm for the genre-shift in a press release: 'Putting characters we loved from The Big Bang Theory into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.' Chuck Lorre added: ' Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is something the characters on The Big Bang Theory would have loved, hated, and argued about.' That meta tone feels right on-brand. No premiere date has been announced yet, but with the series order locked in, expect this chaotic multiverse journey to kick off sooner rather than later. Whether Stuart actually saves the universe, or just makes things hilariously worse remains to be seen. Either way, it looks like Big Bang fans are in for something completely different and weird.

TV fans baffled after one of the 'biggest sitcoms ever' confirms sci-fi spin-off

The Big Bang Theory fans have been left seriously confused after the 'absolutely insane' plot of the upcoming spin-off was finally confirmed. The original sitcom ended in 2019 after 12 years on our screens, but sparked two separate prequel shows – Young Sheldon and George & Mandy's First Marriage. In 2023, bosses announced that another program based on Kevin Sussman's Stuart Bloom was on the way from co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, and it has now been greenlit at HBO Max. A string of familiar faces will be getting in on the action, including Denise actress Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn as Bert, and Barry Kripke star John Ross Bowie – while co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady. However, Stuart Fails To Save The Universe will be a huge departure from the usual TBBT that viewers know as it will see the comic book owner travelling through a multiverse and trying to 'restore reality'. The logline, via Variety, reads: 'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. 'Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). 'Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don't go well.' While it is not clear when Stuart Fails To Save The Universe will premiere, it's fair to say that many were blindsided by the direction of the show, and flocked to social media to unpack the plot. Reddit user MarketingOwn3547 posted: 'I legit can't tell if serious…' 'What? That is so ridiculously divorced from the setting of the original show that I kind of love it. I can only hope that they fully embrace the genre shift and go as weird as they can,' BerksEngineer commented. Alarming-Wish2607 agreed: 'That's absolutely insane. They have earned my attention for at least one or two episodes. If it's bad I owe them nothing.' 'I actually watched all of BBT and mostly enjoyed it. Stuart was fun in very small doses. I can't imagine the character leading a series. This sounds so bad, Lenifilm replied. As Goldman250 added: 'I'm sorry, what the f**k is that plot? I think they might actually be making a show that I'll enjoy.' The Big Bang Theory was hugely popular during the original run, and has gone down as one of the biggest sitcoms in TV history. The upcoming series marks the fourth program in the universe with Chuck sharing in a statement: 'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. 'Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory, would have loved, hated, and argued about.' Teasing what to expect while at the Banff World Media Festival last month, he added: 'There's a lot of CGI. More Trending 'There's a lot of special technical stuff.
