Yahoo11-07-2025
The 'Big Bang Theory' spinoff 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' has officially been greenlit at HBO Max, Variety has learned.
The was originally announced as being in development back in April 2023. As previously reported, the cast of the series is made up of 'Big Bang Theory' alums Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie. The series hails from co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady.

'We're excited to be continuing the legacy of 'The Big Bang Theory.' Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn't be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team,' said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content.
HBO Max has also officially confirmed plot details for the show for the first time. The logline states:
'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from 'The Big Bang Theory.' As the title implies, things don't go well.'
'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on 'The Big Bang Theory,' would have loved, hated, and argued about,' Lorre said.
The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Lorre is under an overall deal. Lorre, Penn, and Prady are also executive producers.
'I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from 'Big Bang Theory' would watch,' Penn said. 'I couldn't resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice. The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people.'
This will now be the fourth show in the 'Big Bang' universe. Aside from the mothership show, which ran for 12 highly-rated seasons on CBS, the prequel 'Young Sheldon' wrapped up its own seven-season run at the broadcast network in May 2024. A spinoff of that show, 'Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage' starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, debuted on CBS on Oct. 17, 2024. This also marks the first series pickup announced since Max officially rebranded (or re-rebranded) itself as HBO Max.
'The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I'm certain that joy will come through the screen,' Prady said. 'Putting characters we loved from 'The Big Bang Theory' into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.'
'Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with 'The Big Bang Theory,' and we can't wait to see the universe continue with this new series,' added Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks. 'With the help of Zak — a masterful storyteller — this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist. We thank our partners HBO Max for joining us on this next adventure.'
Speaking at a panel at the Banff World Media Festival in June, Lorre teased that the new show would be quite the departure from 'The Big Bang Theory' in terms of its look onscreen.
'There's a lot of CGI,' Lorre revealed. 'There's a lot of special technical stuff that — you know, for me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different. This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy. And I'm completely out of my element, which is what I wanted. Which is what I was hoping to do, something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.'

Ted Cruz Defends Sydney Sweeney's Divisive Jeans Ad

Add Sen. Ted Cruz to the chorus of conservatives who are defending Sydney Sweeney amid heated backlash to her American Eagle campaign. On Tuesday, the Texas Republican offered a snide, politically charged take on the controversy on X, formerly Twitter. 'Wow. Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women,' Cruz wrote alongside a New York Post article about the campaign. 'I'm sure that will poll well...' 'This week the Democrats have decided, with the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad, that they hate beautiful women,' he said. 'That's just a little nuts for them to say, 'I'm sorry, we're the Democrats. Beautiful women are no longer acceptable in our society.'' Sweeney, best known for her portrayal of Cassandra 'Cassie' Howard on HBO's Euphoria, has faced a barrage of criticism this week following the release of her American Eagle ads, which play off the words 'genes' and 'jeans.' 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color,' the actor explains in one of the ads. 'My jeans are blue.' A narrator then reads the tagline: 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' Though the ad seems to be intended as an homage to Brooke Shields' 1980 Calvin Klein campaign ― also controversial for its time ― some fans on social media felt it contained white supremacist undertones. 'Having Sydney Sweeney talk about her genes/jeans is already a bad look for American Eagle, but calling her genes/jeans 'blue' takes it even further, hinting at 'blue blood,' a term historically tied to whiteness and aristocratic lineage,' the Instagram account Style Analytics wrote. 'It's a nod to eugenics, aligning the brand with the growing conservative/right-wing/white supremacy movement ... This is just one way brands have recently been attempting to plaicate to conservatives.' Many echoed those sentiments, including one TikTok user who called the ad 'what happens when you have a bunch of white folk who all look and think the same.'

'Leanne': Leanne Morgan brings menopause, heartbreak and big laughs to her Netflix sitcom

The famed comedian takes her great storytelling into her new show with Kristen Johnston Comedian Leanne Morgan brought back the multi-camera sitcom with the release of her new show Leanne on Netflix, working with veterans Kristen Johnston, Ryan Stiles, Blake Clark and Celia Weston. Morgan's stand-up comedy proved that she's a fantastic storyteller, particularly about her family, all done with Southern charm, and Leanne feels like an extension of what fans already love about the star. Morgan plays the title character who's trying to cope with her new life after her husband of 33 years, Bill (Stile), left her for a younger woman. The person who proves to be her biggest ally, her rock during this time is her sister Carol (Johnston), who's already been through two divorces. You also have Leanne's son Tyler (Graham Rogers), the father of Leanne's grandchild, who works for his father, and her daughter Josie (Hannah Pilkes), who's the rebel child to Tyler's "golden boy" status. Leanne's parents, Margaret (Weston) and John (Blark) are a hysterical duo, but a bit more traditional when it comes to their initial thoughts about Leanne and Bill's divorce. "It had always been my dream, and I'd had deals before, but they didn't make it, and then when Chuck Lorre came to me, ... it went so fast. ... Casting and everything just fell into place. It was meant to be," Morgan told Yahoo Canada. "Every Monday, at the start of the week, she would come in and be like, 'I can't, there's so much to remember. I can't do it. This is going to be a failure.' And then by Friday, the audience would get there and ... she was just the pro," Johnston added. "And finally, after a couple weeks, every Monday, I'm like, 'Shut up. You've already said it. You're going to be perfect, because you are!'" But as Morgan described, Johnston had two jobs on the show, to play Carol and to "coach" her through the process of making a sitcom. "She helped me so much, because I didn't know the terminology. I didn't know anything," Morgan said. "Then I got settled into it and I want to keep doing it. ... It felt like home by the end of it." Menopause and sisterhood At 59 years old Morgan, who's also the co-creator and an executive producer on the series, really leans into the fact that Leanne is a woman in her late 50s having to reevaluate her life. That includes a particularly notable episode where, as Leanne starts dating, specifically Tim Dally's character Andrew, her menopause gets in the way as she has a hot flash in the middle of their date. "It wasn't hard, because I have gone through menopause and I have sweat and wake up in the middle of the night, and Chuck Morgan, my husband, has said, 'What is that?' And I go, 'Touch this!' And he's like, 'Ew!" Morgan said. "So that is all real and that came from an authentic place honey, because I have been through a rough menopause. Now I haven't had to date, thank the Lord, because that would be, ... I can't imagine. A jungle." But at the heart of show is the relationship between Leanne and Carol, with Morgan and Johnston being a particularly effective comedy pair. Johnston highlighted that a lot of it was informed by the off screen relationship between the stars. "Another thing that's so great about this writing team is they picked up on all that, and I think they bring that into the relationships," Johnston said. "I don't think there were like 30 scenes set in Leanne's bed between us until we started. They started realizing how great those scenes worked. ... A great writer watches the dynamic and builds on it, and takes what works. And I think our relationship definitely bled into the show a lot."
