"The Choice is CLEar," says airport that also hosts CLEAR
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport this week launched a new marketing campaign highlighting its marquee nonstop destinations. Tagline: "The choice is CLEar." What they're saying: It "drives home that CLE is the clear choice for business and leisure travelers with 126 daily departures to 40 nonstop destinations," said Megan O'Connell, Hopkins' new assistant director of marketing, in a press release. Zoom in: Video ads in the series invite travelers to " Skedaddle to Seattle," " Take off to Toronto" and " Depart for Dublin." 💭 Sam's thought bubble: Two quick notes, as I rewatch the "We Here for You" interlude from "Succession." 1. The eternal "CLE" wordplay admittedly makes more sense for Hopkins than it does for the city of Cleveland — CLE being the airport's IATA airport code. 2. Not that anyone would be legitimately confused by this, but Hopkins is also home to CLEAR, the private company that uses biometric data as a kind of TSA fast pass. For $189 per year, travelers can dash through airport security via dedicated lanes.

Cleveland Hopkins to allow non-travelers past security starting Aug. 11
Starting Aug. 11, you can reenact your favorite rom-com finale of kissing a sweetheart before they board a plane. State of play: Cleveland Hopkins International Airport will allow non-ticketed guests to go beyond the security checkpoint for the first time in years, thanks to a new offering called the "Hopkins Hangout Pass." The big picture: The program will offer travelers and their loved ones the opportunity for final farewells or a last-minute meal in the terminal. It also means that adults can escort younger travelers or seniors who may need assistance to their gates. How it works: Interested guests must apply for a pass between 24 hours and seven days in advance.

Cleveland Hopkins airport revamp: Here's what's coming
CLEVELAND (WJW) – A billion-dollar plan to transform Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is officially underway, with city leaders unveiling new details Tuesday about a multi-phase project that will unfold over the next decade. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb and Director of Port Control Bryant Francis revealed updated plans that include a brand new terminal, expanded parking, and modernized transportation infrastructure. All of it, part of a $1.6 billion investment aimed at reimagining the city's primary airport as a '21st century gateway' for travelers. $100K scratch-off winner sold at local grocery store 'It's a bold new departure for our airport,' Mayor Bibb said during a press event held on the pedestrian bridge connecting the terminal and parking garage. 'A world-class city needs a world-class airport.' The redevelopment marks the largest capital investment in the airport's 100-year history. While past proposals focused on rebuilding the terminal in its current footprint, the updated plan shifts the main terminal to the site of the existing Smart Parking Garage allowing for greater expansion and design flexibility. Phase 1: New Gold Lot 2026 A 1,600-space surface lot will be built adjacent to the long-vacant Concourse D. This project is expected to open in 2026 and help alleviate near-term parking needs. Phase 2: Ground Transportation Hub 2029 The current Orange Lot will become home to a new $301 million facility featuring a 6,000-space parking garage, centralized ground transportation center, and an upgraded RTA station. This phase is projected to open by 2029. Phase 3: New Terminal 2032 The centerpiece of the project, a brand new terminal, will be constructed where the Smart Parking Garage currently stands. Once the garage is demolished and relocated, work will begin on the $1.1 billion terminal, with an anticipated completion date in 2032. Francis said the airport continues to negotiate financing details with major airlines, who are expected to fund much of the terminal construction. A final agreement could be reached as early as next year. Pilot of small plane identified in fatal Ashland County crash The city also released preliminary renderings created by Dallas-based architecture firm Corgan, showing a sleek, modern terminal flooded with natural light. The design features floor-to-ceiling windows, high ceilings with skylights, spacious ticketing areas, and improved passenger flow from curb to gate. 'This design is a symbol of fluidity,' Francis said. 'It's a structure that dances with sunlight gliding through glass and steel to create a sense of calm and movement for travelers.' The initial focus of the redesign will center on pre-security areas, including ticketing, check-in, and baggage claim. Improvements to concourses and gate areas are expected in future phases. The announcement comes as Cleveland Hopkins celebrates its 100th anniversary as a city-owned airport. In 2024, the airport served over 10 million passengers and offered nonstop service to 42 destinations through 10 major airlines. A Hopkins Airport official confirmed to Fox 8 that part of the plan has been submitted for approval to the FAA. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. You ready? REAL ID deadline for domestic travel 1 month away
CLEVELAND (WJW) — For years it's been the same routine at TSA checkpoints. But starting May 7, TSA officers and agents will be looking for a new form of identification from travelers for domestic flights. Travelers need to upgrade to REAL ID for an enhanced driver's license from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport now accepting Apple Wallet for TSA ID check While the transition varies from state to state, in Ohio the REAL ID will have a star on the upper right side of the card. 'Our mission is to protect our nation's transportation security system. Make sure our passengers are getting where they're going safely,' TSA regional spokesperson Jessica Mayle told FOX 8. Some jet setters we spoke with at the airport Monday said they were already prepared, getting a REAL ID years ago. Obtaining a compliant card requires more documentation than the standard card. You'll need documents to provide your full legal name, date of birth, legal presence in the U.S., social security umber and the two documents for proof of Ohio residency. Before leaving the BMV your current drivers license will be perforated on the upper left side to visually indicate the license is in process. TSA reveals 10 most 'unusual' finds at checkpoints in 2024 Mayle said that card would be accepted to board a flight, as well as a passport, during the transition. TSA also says expect some delays if you're not in compliance, as additional screening may be required. 'So you might be able to fly and make it through the checkpoint, but definitely you want to give yourself extra time if you're going to the checkpoint without a REAL ID after the deadline,' Mayle said. TSA said extra agents and officers will be on hand to handle the crowds during their busiest travel times. Congress passed the law back in 2005, after Sept. 11, but it is finally moving into place next month. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
