How to watch 'Dexter: Resurrection' and what to expect from Michael C. Hall's return
Today's the day ... when Michael C. Hall reprises his Emmy-nominated role once again as America's favorite vigilante serial killer: Dexter Morgan. The first two episodes of the premiere season of Dexter: Resurrection are now streaming, making it the fourth series in the Dexter-verse. The Dexter revival series is chock-full of new uber-villains, with big celebrity names like: Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Neil Patrick Harris and Krysten Ritter. It takes place in a Gotham-esque New York City, where serial killers are summoned for a MurderCon-style meetup. "They don't all live in New York City, but let's say they've been invited there; it's a gathering," Dexter creator and executive producer Clyde Phillips told USA Today. "This season is a unique launching pad for however many years this series will be going." Here's what to know about Dexter: Resurrection, including how to watch, a quick recap of the franchise and a look at the cast. The original Dexter series follows Dexter Morgan (Hall), who struggles with strong homicidal urges and calls it his Dark Passenger. His adoptive father and police officer, Harry Morgan (James Remar), teaches him how to control these dark thoughts by following a code, only killing those who have escaped justice. Dexter's ability to control these urges is the central theme of the show, while trying to maintain a normal life as a forensic technician for the Miami Metro Police Department. The 8-season show ran from 2006 to 2013. The sequel series Dexter: New Blood is set 10 years after the events of the Dexter finale and ran from 2021 to 2022. It follows Dexter Morgan trying to live a quiet life under the alias 'Jim Lindsay' in a small town in upstate New York. Events lead him to kill again, waking up his Dark Passenger, while also reconnecting with his son, Harrison. The finale ends with Harrison shooting and killing his dad. Or so we thought... Then there was Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel series that takes place 15 years before the events of Dexter and debuted in 2024. It looks at a young Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson), who first starts working for the Miami Metro Police Department while learning to channel his dark urges. It was announced in April that Season 2 has been greenlighted for production. You will need either a subscription to Paramount+ with the Paramount Premium plan or a cable subscription that includes Showtime. The first two episodes of the show, titled 'A Beating Heart…' and 'Camera Shy,' were available to stream on Paramount+ Premium for subscribers on July 11, starting at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT. For those with cable, it will begin airing on Showtime on Sunday, July 13 at 8 p.m. ET. July 11: Episodes 1 and 2 July 18: Episode 3 July 25: Episode 4 Aug. 1: Episode 5 Aug. 8: Episode 6 Aug. 15: Episode 7 Aug. 22: Episode 8 Aug. 29: Episode 9 Sept. 5: Episode 10 There are a total of 10 episodes in the new show. The official summary for the series says, 'Dexter: Resurrection takes place weeks after Dexter Morgan (Hall) takes a bullet to the chest from his own son, as he awakens from a coma to find Harrison (Jack Alcott) gone without a trace. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But closure won't come easy. As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined — and that the only way out is together.' Below is a list of returning characters, including the Trinity Killer, as well as new, star-studded additions: Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan James Remar as Harry Morgan (Dexter's adopted father) David Zayas as Detective Angel Batista (Miami Metro Police Department) Jack Alcott as Harrison Morgan (Dexter's son) Peter Dinklage as Leon Prater (billionaire venture capitalist with an invested interest in serial killers) Uma Thurman as Charley (former special ops officer; Prater's head of security) Krysten Ritter as Mia (sommelier by day, serial killer 'Lady Vengeance' by night) Neil Patrick Harris as Lowell (an anesthesiologist with a serial killer alter ego known as 'The Tattoo Collector') Eric Stonestreet as Al (Midwestern serial killer known as "Rapunzel') David Dastmalchian as Gareth ("The Gemini Killer') Steve Schirripa as Vinny (a greedy slumlord) John Lithgow as Arthur Mitchell (a.k.a. 'The Trinity Killer') Jimmy Smits as Miguel Prado (a former assistant district attorney) At the end of Dexter: New Blood, fans are led to believe that Dexter Morgan had finally met his fate after his son shot him. 'Well, you know, he didn't get shot in the head,' Hall shrugged as he spoke with the Guardian in an interview, saying it was his idea to resurrect the character. 'The conversation started as a result of my saying, 'What if he didn't die?'' he said in a relaxed way, according to the Guardian. 'I can't take credit for the whole scope of what we're up to, but it was a notion that I casually floated. What if the end of New Blood was something that enabled Dexter to relinquish some burden that he'd been carrying for a long time?'

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors "Dexter: Resurrection" Season 1 premieres Friday and, from what the critics are saying, fans are not going to want to miss it. The revival series debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with an extremely impressive 100% critics score. From what the reviews are saying, the key to the success of "Dexter: Resurrection" is showrunner Clyde Phillips's care in channeling the original series while still injecting the revival with something new. Read More: 'King of the Hill' Revival Trailer Brings the Hills Back Home The San Francisco Chronicle writes that "[Clyde Phillips] still constructs tight, sick, suspenseful stories. They're character-driven with well-placed humor too" while says that the show "is rooted firmly in the haunting and bleak foundation of the original series." Zach Dilgard/Paramount+ Premium Cade Onder of ComicBook calls it "a tremendous return for Dexter that carefully blends the old with the new to make something deliciously sinister and fun." I watched the first 4 episodes of Dexter: Resurrection a while ago and it's been a painful secret to sit on. It's a tremendous return for Dexter that carefully blends the old with the new to make something deliciously sinister and fun. My full review: — Cade Onder (@Cade_Onder) July 10, 2025 IGN says that the first four episodes "crackle with old Dexter fun, delivering a smorgasbord of fresh killers, cops, and crucibles for the former Bay Harbor Butcher to navigate." The first four episodes of Dexter: Resurrection crackle with old Dexter fun, delivering a smorgasbord of fresh killers, cops, and crucibles for the former Bay Harbor Butcher to navigate. Our review: — IGN (@IGN) July 10, 2025 Along with the old, the critics love what's new about "Dexter: Resurrection." In fact, some of them call it superior to older series. Collider in particular claims the series is "not just more Dexter — it's better Dexter. The writing is sharper, the characters are much more layered, and the moral dilemmas hit harder than ever." IndieWire praises both the new and old, writing, "Those little flourishes -- the new setting, the old humor, the new killers (who are just goofy enough to evoke the excellent killers of old) -- are enough of a hook to reward anyone still eager to engage with their favorite aughts era mass murderer." Of course one of the things that stands out about "Dexter: Resurrection" is its exceptional cast and they aren't forgotten in the praise. The Daily Telegraph writes that "Watching Hall and Dinklage go head-to-head as the series develops will make the whole endeavour worthwhile." Though the same publication has a somewhat mixed take on the acting, writing, "the less said the better about Uma Thurman's pantomime turn as Dinklage's fixer." "Dexter: Resurrection" premieres Friday on Paramount+ Premium with two episodes. Michael C. Hall returns as the eponymous serial killer, last seen very briefly in the opening episode of the prequel series "Dexter: Original Sin."
