Mableton, Cobb County approve short-term agreement for police, transportation services
Cobb County announced they'd officially finalized an agreement for a year of services for the City of Mableton. As of June 2, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the short-term intergovernmental agreement between the county and the city, providing police services and transportation service maintenance in exchange for $9.5 million. Discussion on the one-year agreement continued for several weeks as the Mableton City Council and Cobb County Commission worked to nail down the details. The scheduled $9.5 million payment is intended to compensate the county for revenue lost due to the incorporation of Mableton,' the county said in a statement. Mableton's leaders have focused on not increasing taxes to city residents, underscoring that goal on multiple occasions. 'At the end of the day, our job is to protect the people of Mableton—not just with police officers and safe roads, but through fairness, fiscal responsibility, transparency, and foresight. This agreement wasn't perfect, but it was necessary given the situation we faced," Mableton Mayor Michael Owens said previously. With the agreement reached for the one-year contract, Cobb County police will serve the city as its police force and the Cobb County Department of Transportation will serve the city's needs when it comes to things like road safety and maintenance. Mableton City Council votes down services agreement with Cobb County, negotiations ongoing
A tentative agreement between the City of Mableton and Cobb County for running police and transportation services was voted down Thursday, putting both governments back at the negotiating table. A spokesman for the City of Mableton said the one-year agreement to fund police and department of transportation services in the city was voted down by the council 4-3. Channel 2 Action News reported Thursday that Mayor Michael Owens said the agreement was only set for one-year as the county and city continued to discuss longer-term service needs. To be enacted, both the Mableton City Council and Cobb County Board of Commissioners would've had to vote in favor of the terms. With the city council rejecting the $9.5 million service agreement, both governments remain in discussion about how to move forward. Some Cobb County voters sent incorrect precinct cards
The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is warning some of its residents that human error may have caused them to get misdirected precinct cards. Some people in nine of the county's 148 precincts have gotten voter precinct cards addressed to voters who do not live at that address, Cobb County says. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The county blamed the misdirected cards on a clerical error during the transfer of address data. The Elections and Registration Office is required to let voters know if their polling places are changing ahead of the remaining 2025 elections. The misdirected precinct cards were sent to people in the following precincts: Bells Ferry 02 Clarkdale 01 Clarkdale 02 Eastside 02 Kemp 02 Kennesaw 4A North Cobb 01 Shallowford Falls 01 Willeo 01 'Our office is working with our vendor to send corrected cards to affected households,' said Elections Director Tate Fall. The Elections and Registration Office said that just because a person's name is listed at the address on the precinct card doesn't mean that the voter is registered at the address where the card was received. Officials also reminded people that precinct change cards are sent out for informational use only, not as valid voting identification.
