Mableton City Council votes down services agreement with Cobb County, negotiations ongoing
A tentative agreement between the City of Mableton and Cobb County for running police and transportation services was voted down Thursday, putting both governments back at the negotiating table.
A spokesman for the City of Mableton said the one-year agreement to fund police and department of transportation services in the city was voted down by the council 4-3.
Channel 2 Action News reported Thursday that Mayor Michael Owens said the agreement was only set for one-year as the county and city continued to discuss longer-term service needs.
To be enacted, both the Mableton City Council and Cobb County Board of Commissioners would've had to vote in favor of the terms.
With the city council rejecting the $9.5 million service agreement, both governments remain in discussion about how to move forward.

However, on Thursday, the city council voted the agreement down in a 4-to-3 vote. Several area jails to receive state funding for renovations, improvements
Several area jails will receive state funding for construction and renovation projects, according to a spokesperson from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's office. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On Friday, DeWine and Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Director Annette Chambers-Smith announced that 19 jails across the state will receive grants totaling about $50 million. The Tri-County Jail, located in Champaign County, will receive approximately $46,568 to renovate a space for court hearing video services and a private space for mental health services. The Darke County Jail, which opened in 1983, will get approximately $136,809 to conduct a needs assessment and feasibility study to determine the need for a new jail. The Logan County Jail will receive $549,012 to improve HVAC, mechanical, and plumbing systems. The funding will also help renovate the intake, booking, and medical areas of the building. 'This funding will not only support safer environments for those living and working in our local jails, but it will also help prepare inmates for release by creating improved spaces for workforce development, educational opportunities, and other programming,' DeWine said. Federal government to close Peachtree Summit building, moves forward with sale plan
A federal report on the various properties owned by the government said closing down a building in Atlanta would save taxpayers more than $700 million. The government is now moving forward with plans to sell Peachtree Summit Federal Building, and 10 others. The Public Building Reform Board released a report on May 22 recommending to close the Peachtree Summit Federal Building, saying it wasn't being used enough and would cost too much to modernize it. The Atlanta federal building was among 11 sites to be consolidated or closed, according to the PBRB report. After going over the report, the PBRB said it was moving forward with putting the buildings up for sale, including Peachtree Summit. The Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget made the announcement, saying 'OMB fully supports increasing the effectiveness and cost efficiency of the Federal real property portfolio, and the disposition of these properties furthers that goal. Therefore, I am approving the Board's recommendation with direction to the Administrator of GSA to effectuate the sales in a manner that meets statutory requirements.'
