AFLW remains 'investment worth making' despite concerns, says Andrew Dillon ahead of 10th season
AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon insists the AFLW remains an investment "absolutely worth making" as the competition battles with stagnating crowds and ratings ahead of its milestone 10th season. The competition kicks off with Carlton playing Collingwood at Princes Park on August 14. In recent years, the AFLW has expanded in size and season length while players are receiving far better salaries and conditions, but it has dropped off in attendances and TV ratings. The AFL has reportedly told clubs the women's competition is losing $50 million a year, though Dillon says that's not a "line" that's ever been run by the league. "We have a big investment in AFLW, but it's an investment absolutely worth making," he said. "And you can talk about direct profit losses, but I think what's also important when you're looking at a competition like AFLW, are the indirect benefits that we have from having an elite women's competition. "The increase in women and girls coming to our games, increasing women and girls playing our game, the opportunities that it opens up for our clubs in terms of infrastructure, the opportunities that it opens up for the clubs in the AFL in attracting and retaining broadcasters, commercial partners and just attracting fans. "I think it's an investment well worth making." Dillon was speaking at the AFL's industry summit involving staff from all clubs. Tuesday's summit included a presentation making it clear the AFL considers the AFLW a key "lever" in achieving its overall attendance and membership targets. Dillon was confident the AFLW was heading in the right direction. "Coming into season 10, we've got a really solid base from which I think we'll grow," Dillon said. "We've got incredible athletes coming into the game, incredible athletes playing and now what we want to do is just continue to promote the game and get more people to come and see it in person and then watch it on TV. "I think if you haven't watched it more recently, you'll be really pleasantly surprised. The style of play is really exciting, and I'm really looking forward to season 10 starting in a couple of weeks." AAP

Daicos puzzle for Fly after Pies' wake-up call
Collingwood coach Craig McRae is eager to see more of Josh Daicos as an inside midfielder, but concedes his hands might be tied for the clash with Fremantle. An elite half-back and wingman, Daicos was outstanding when moved into the engine room last round. The 26-year-old produced a 16-disposal, two-goal final quarter that almost dragged the Magpies to a comeback win over Gold Coast. But with super-boot Dan Houston (abdominal strain) sidelined, McRae could be forced to use Daicos in defence against the Dockers at the MCG on Sunday. "Everyone in the footy world will be wondering where he starts this week," McRae said. "With Dan out, it will be challenging to keep him out of the back-line for major parts. "But I think also we'd be silly not to explore what that (inside midfield option) looks like, whether it's this week or going forward. "He had a remarkable impact on the (Gold Coast) game. "He's an elite talent in the game and I honestly think you could play him anywhere and he'll have an impact. "It's about what the team needs." Josh Daicos SAULTES! 🫡 🔥What a start to the fourth term from our number 7! — Collingwood FC (@CollingwoodFC) July 11, 2025 McRae conceded Josh's superstar younger brother Nick Daicos was sore during the Gold Coast clash, when he had 26 disposals and six clearances. But he said the Brownlow Medal favourite had rebuffed the idea of playing in the substitute role, amid suggestions he should be rested before the finals. "The facts were he looked sore and the GPS says that," McRae said. "He's getting beaten up a bit but that's part of the job, isn't it? "It's hard to keep him out though ... it's a challenge to keep one of the best players off the field but we're very conscious of his loads." The loss to the Suns was only Collingwood's third of the season, cutting their lead on top of the ladder to six competition points. McRae agreed it had put a bit of fire back in his team's belly ahead of the Fremantle clash. "We got served a pretty ugly meal at the start of the game, particularly at halftime without scoring a goal," McRae said. "(It was) a little wake-up call ... there's a lot of things in this game that we think will serve us well at another time when needed. "Whether it's coming from behind to get up or fighting for every inch in every minute we have in games. "But I'd like to think the pencils are a bit sharper this week." McRae confirmed Beau McCreery (hamstring), Brody Mihocek and Pat Lipinski (both managed) would all return against Fremantle. Veteran flyer Jeremy Howe (groin) will miss, along with fellow defensive mainstay Houston. Bobby Hill requires a short training block to return to full fitness, set to miss a fourth straight game after sitting out because of personal reasons and illness.

Key Magpies ruled out of MCG clash with Fremantle
Collingwood recruit Dan Houston and Norm Smith Medallist Bobby Hill have been ruled out of facing Fremantle at the MCG. Houston suffered a mild abdominal strain in the Magpies' defeat to Gold Coast last Friday night and will miss the next two weeks. The former Port Adelaide superboot had scans after playing the Suns, with results ruling him out of facing the Dockers and Richmond. Hill will sit out a fourth straight match after dealing with personal reasons, and battling with illness last week. "Hill returned to training over the weekend," Collingwood high performance boss Jarrod Wade said. "His focus is on resuming full training before a timeline is placed on his return." Along with Houston, veteran Jeremy Howe will leave another hole in Collingwood's defence after suffering an adductor strain against Gold Coast, ruling him out for two weeks. But in better news for the Magpies, forward Beau McCreery is set to return against Fremantle after recovering from a hamstring that led him to miss the past three matches. A pair of defenders have been ruled out for two weeks each, while a forward is a test for Sunday's clash with Fremantle 👀 Read the full injury update here: — Collingwood FC (@CollingwoodFC) July 16, 2025 Premiership star Jordan De Goey is due to come out of concussion protocols in coming days after copping a hit at training. But De Goey will be put through a two-week training block before being considered to play. The 29-year-old has been restricted to five games this season, the last coming in round eight against Geelong. Collingwood being without a number of key players won't worry them. In round nine, the Magpies travelled to Perth undermanned and managed to secure a 14-point win against Fremantle at Optus Stadium.

Gold Coast dreaming of maiden AFL finals berth after Suns stunned 'jetlagged' Collingwood
Gold Coast Suns players are daring to dream of finals footy after stunning ladder- leaders Collingwood on Friday night. Damien Hardwick's men rode their luck at times - and a number of Magpies stars were guilty of wayward kicking. But the Suns (11-5) won't care, recording a thrilling six-point victory to send a message to the rest of the AFL competition and also stay nestled in the top eight. Footy fans also poked fun at Collingwood on social media, who came up short playing a rare away game. 'Clearly suffering from jet lag,' joked one supporter at fulltime on X. 'I feel for the Magpies I really do. Such a strong team being dismantled by cruel jet lag, the AFL should do something about this awful fixturing,' a second said sarcastically. 'It's clear the very unfair travel burden @CollingwoodFC have to bear is impacting them. When will it end? Time for more games at the G,' a third posted. Of Collingwood's 23 matches this season, 14 of them are staged at the MCG - with another three games just 3km away at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. Despite the impressive result, Suns coach Hardwick is reluctant to use the 'F' word - finals - just yet. 'It is big (result) because it was a big game,' he told reporters. 'We played an outstanding brand of footy....(now) I'm sitting here hoping the city (Gold Coast locals) jump on and look at this side thinking, 'I want to be part of this.' Hardwick also singled out the performance of midfielder Matt Rowell, who with 32 disposals, two goals, 13 tackles and 12 clearances was immense for the hosts. 'People want to come and watch the best had a heap of the ball, massive tackle count and kicked some big goals,' he said. 'I thought he was wonderful.' After entering the AFL in 2011, the Suns' ongoing finals drought is well documented. If Hardwick can guide his men to play in September, his coaching will be lauded at two clubs - after previously winning three premierships at Richmond between 2017 and 2020.

Pies masterclass too much for Hawks
AFL: Collingwood have further cemented themselves as the favourites to win this year's competition with a thumping of Hawthorn in front of a packed MCG.
