North Wales cabaret performer FishWidow's album unleashed

Electronic musician Josh Gemmell performs as FishWidow, appearing regularly at events in North Wales, included recently Colwyn Bay Pride and North Wales Pride in Bethesda. Originally from Warrington, Josh has released records under the name 'Jacques 'n' Their Box' in recent years. Describing the music, Josh said: "I love to create haunting soundscapes with my music that continue to blur the line between noisy and ambient styles. I also love to cryptically sing and speak poetry over these eerie worlds. Currently I'm experimenting with disjointed rhythms and Trip Hop styles. "I won't pretend that my music is for everyone, but it certainly scratches a niche with people I've met! I'm inspired by classic 80s industrial bands like the infamous Throbbing Gristle and Nurse With Wound but also love a bit of 90s Trip Hop like Massive Attack and Tricky. The new album The Unauthodox Texts is a collaboration with musician and artist Alpha-27. Josh says fans of the wilder, more experimental side of 90s Trip Hop will love the release. Josh added: "I love The Unauthodox Texts because it's a brilliant combination of contradictions! It is simultaneously the heaviest and most approachable record I've ever contributed to with its gnarly yet familiar rhythms. Lyrically, it starts off as a record challenging religion and yet ends with with two eccentric covers of traditional church hymns. We live in a confusing and chaotic world and I think this record highlights this! "As a queer performer and a practicing Quaker this album almost feels like a queer reclaiming of personal faith and I'm really happy to share it with people. "I've been a fan of my collaborator, Alpha-27 for a while now, having also followed their youtube channel and their journalistic output before engaging in their musical catalogue. Being on the other side of the continent we collaborated remotely via file sharing." "Honestly before starting this project, I was going through a bit of a creative rut so was great to challenge myself and get mixing again! I am really proud of the end result as we both did really well in fleshing out each other's ideas."

REVIEW: Bobcats Coffee triumphs in historic Colwyn Bay building

Formerly a landmark destination in the town's heyday, the building had become a notable eyesore since its incarnation as "The Imp" nightclub came to an end in 2010. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. But, last year, the new owners' accommodation and commercial vision for the building was realised. Bangor University graduate Bobby-Jack Stott, 20, opened Bobcats Coffee in late 2024, offering homemade toasties, sandwiches, pastries and sweet treats. Vicki and Bobby-Jack at Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. When he opened the cafe, Bobby-Jack told us: 'I'm excited to bring new life to this historic location and share our love for great coffee with the community." I have worked for the North Wales Pioneer long enough to remember walking past the Imperial Hotel, Boots, and Blockbuster Video on my walk to the office. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. So, for me, it is fantastic to see a new independent business thriving in the building, which to many is the first they encounter being located opposite the train station. Bobcats CoffeeI was in town again to cover Colwyn Bay Pride last month, and called in to the cafe to recharge my batteries - more specifically my phone batteries. Having made use of the facilities, I ordered a coffee and cake. Bobby-Jack has made good use of the space, it's light, airy, and, most of all cosy. There are no pretences, Bobcats Coffee aims to simply be a community cafe serving good coffee, cakes and light bites. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. The coffee was very good, with non-dairy options available. It came in a cat-themed mug, which was charming and, as I learned later, due to their choice of coffee as Bobcats Coffee serves Ginger Cat Coffee's Buddy Blend. Bobcats Coffee, Colwyn Bay. There was a good choice of cakes, all of which looked very tempting. My choice of fruit cake was essentially an oversized version of a country slice produced by a company known for good cakes. Exceedingly good in fact. Being Pride, Bobcats Coffee was fulfilling the role of a hub for those venturing up towards town from the entertainment at the prom. Locals and visitors alike were mingling and chatting, and the fresh servings of hospitality suggest that Bobcats is a great addition to Colwyn Bay. Pet-friendly and inclusive, it may just the warmest welcome on offer in Colwyn Bay.
