Transformers-themed muscle car, tuned-up vehicles ignite Apoclaypse Auto Show
Kong (left) and Lam (right) take a look at the engine of a tuned-up car. KUCHING (July 20): From a Transformers-inspired Camaro to a Spy Family-themed four-wheel drive (4WD), the Apoclaypse Auto Show Vol 3 shifted into high gear today. Car enthusiasts and participants rolled into CityOne Megamall basement carpark as early as 8am today to proudly showcase their heavily tuned-up machines, with the revs of roaring engines could be heard from a distance. Among the show-stopping cars was a yellow Chevrolet Camaro with black stripes, clearly drawing inspiration from the 2007 'Transformers' film. Under the hood, it sported an Autbots logo on the engine block, with stacks of miniature Camaros and a Volkswagen Beetle placed on it — a nod to the beloved Autobot character Bumblebee. Also turning heads was a 4WD decorated with three anime action figures and a plushie of Yor Forger — one of the iconic leads from hit anime series Spy Family — adding a playful touch of pop culture. Other eye-catching entries included a sleek Lotus Elise, a Toyota GR86, and a fleet of meticulously modded Subarus. The event was officiated by Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong, who represented DAP Sarawak chairman and Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen; as well as Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak secretary George Lam, who represented Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii. Kong said: 'While we celebrate this passion for the automotive world, it is equally important that this hobby is pursued responsibly and within the bounds of the law. 'As we all try to enjoy our hobby and explore the limitations of creativity, let us always be reminded of public safety.' Highlights from the event included 32 competition categories and a lucky draw with prizes such as car accessories and audio systems. Tickets were sold at RM10 each at the organiser's booth, with limited edition event stickers available at RM5 each. In the spirit of giving back, event organiser Apoclaypse Car Club of Kuching announced that 30 per cent of proceeds from ticket and sticker sales would be donated to charity. Kong (second right) in a photo call with LPKP Sabah chairperson Vivian Wong Shir Yee (centre) after a meeting held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah recently. KUCHING (June 24): The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak is working towards harmonising policies with its Sabah counterpart to create a more unified and business-friendly regulatory environment for the industry. Its chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian said the initiative follows a key meeting between LPKP Sarawak and LPKP Sabah in July 2024, during which both parties agreed to work towards synchronising their commercial vehicle policies. 'One of our primary objectives is to establish a clearer and more structured regulatory framework for industry players, particularly those engaged in cross-border trade with Indonesia and Brunei. 'Additionally, this initiative will improve connectivity with our Asean partners, Indonesia and Brunei, fostering greater economic cooperation,' said Kong in a statement following a meeting between LPKP Sabah and Sarawak held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah recently. As part of its reform agenda, LPKP Sarawak will soon require all commercial vehicles to be equipped with GPS systems. Kong said this move is aimed at enhancing road safety, ensuring regulatory compliance and support real-time vehicle monitoring. He added that the GPS systems must comply with safety and technical standards set by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) to ensure consistency and reliability across the industry. According to him, Industry players have welcomed the move, recognising the benefits of a more cohesive and transparent regulatory structure. 'At LPKP Sarawak, we remain dedicated to refining and modernising our policies in response to industry needs. 'We appreciate the cooperation and valuable input of our board members and stakeholders as we work towards building a stronger, more efficient regulatory framework that empowers the commercial vehicle sector and contributes to Sarawak's economic prosperity,' he said.

Kong (second left) and others pose for the camera during a stop along the new route. KUCHING (May 22): The sixth Saujana-Kampung Benuk route under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) Kuching initiative has been officially launched to provide better connectivity for the community. Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Sarawak chairman Michael Kong said the new route is a significant addition to the city's growing public transport network. 'It is aimed at enhancing connectivity for residents from Kota Padawan, Bung Barau and Kampung Benuk to downtown Kuching. 'What is especially exciting about this new route is that it overlaps with the existing Saujana-Bau route at several key stops, including Timberland Medical Centre, Boulevard Shopping Mall, Farley Mile 6 Mile, and Mile 7 Bazaar. 'With this, commuters now have more flexibility and convenience in choosing between two service options for these destinations,' he said in a statement today following the launch. According to Kong, the first bus for the Saujana-Kampung Benuk route departs at 5.30am from Kampung Benuk and 6.30am from Saujana, with the last bus at 7.30pm on weekdays. He said the service operates from 6.30am to 8.30pm on weekends. 'Following our recent test run, we have identified 6.30 to 8.30am and 4.30 to 7.30pm on weekdays as peak hours. In response, we will increase the frequency of buses during these periods to every 30 minutes, ensuring that commuters have a timely and reliable alternative to private vehicles,' he explained. Kong said the launch is part of CVLB's broader mission to build a more accessible, sustainable and efficient public transport system for greater Kuching, while also helping to lower household transportation costs. He said public transport is not only a viable alternative, but also a smarter, more environmentally-friendly choice that helps reduce traffic congestion and lower household transportation costs. As such, he urged the public, particularly those living in areas served by the new route, to take advantage of the service. 'Your support and usage of the SBST Kuching services will ensure its long-term sustainability and growth, as we continue working towards an integrated, people-focused public transport ecosystem.' He also thanked the public for their continuous feedback and pledged CVLB's commitment to improving connectivity across Sarawak. bus route CVLB Kuching Michael Kong Saujana-Kampung Benuk
