STEAK was a good opener, leaving me with just 7 words. But man oh man did I botch things with CHOIR. I obviously had no idea that only 7 words remained so I just thought I might as well rule out some letters. CHOIR only slashed two words from my total! Ugh. USUAL cut that down to just one: ASSAY for the win! Today's Bot We flip the tables once again. The Bot gets two points this time for beating me and guessing in three. I lose one for losing to the Bot. Our new totals for July are: Erik: 9 points Wordle Bot: 10 points It all comes down to tomorrow's Wordle! This is the closest we've ever been! The word "assay" comes from the Old French assai or essai, meaning "trial" or "test," which itself comes from the Late Latin exagium, meaning "a weighing" or "a test." This derives from Latin ex- ("out") + agere ("to drive, do"). It's closely related to the word essay, which originally meant a trial or attempt. The answer is coming! . . . The Answer: Today's Wordle Screenshot: Erik Kain Wordle Analysis Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here . This was a tough one! Even starting with CRANE, Wordle Bot's second favorite opening guess, I took five tries today and I got lucky. HOIST only cut my 191 remaining possible solutions down to 28 and POWER only slashed that number down to 9. I was running low on guesses, but couldn't think of any good words to get rid of more letters. LOVER only cut my total down to 6, and at this point I started to get worried. Fortunately, GOFER did the trick. Yikes. Competitive Wordle Score Today's Wordle Bot Screenshot: Erik Kain Miraculously, the Wordle Bot took six tries today. I don't think I've ever seen Wordle Bot take six tries before. Five a couple times, but six? I don't think so. Good news for me, though! I get -1 point for guessing in five and 1 point for beating the Bot, which leaves me with 0 points. Even doubling 0 for 2XP Friday just equals zero. However, the Bot gets -2 for guessing in six and -1 for losing to me. That's -3 x 2 for 2XP Friday, or -6 total. Even getting o today, I take the lead for the first time since the very beginning of July. Our totals narrow to: Erik: 8 points Wordle Bot: 6 points How To Play Competitive Wordle Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points. If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day. Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative. You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy! Today's Wordle Etymology The word "gofer" comes from the phrase "go for" as in someone who "goes for" things on behalf of others. It originated in American English in the 1950s, especially in office or film settings, to describe a junior employee or assistant sent to fetch items or run errands. The word is unrelated to the animal gopher , though the similar spelling often causes confusion. TRIBE was a good opener today, leaving me with just 18 remaining words and a green and yellow box. I enjoy working in airports but I'm always a bit more distracted and today I screwed up my second guess. MUSIC left me with 80 words and eliminated the 'C' which I promptly used in CRATE for my second guess. So annoying! Still, this cut my possible solutions down to just four and I got lucky when I guessed HABIT for the win. I'll take a sloppy win! Today's Wordle Bot In spite of my screw-up, I still beat the Bot today. I get 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating the Bot. The Bot gets 0 for guessing in four and -1 for losing to me.
