2 killed, 1 nabbed in separate ops in Maguindanao

Two people were killed while another was arrested in separate operations against illegal drugs and selling of firearms in Maguindanao provinces. Police and military personnel were about to serve an arrest warrant against a man who is facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act in Datu Montawal, Maguindanao del Sur. However, the operating team engaged the subject of the warrant and his companions in an exchange of fire, which resulted in the death of one of the suspects and the arrest of his companion. The subject of the warrant escaped and is being pursued, as of this writing. Seized from the suspects who were slain and arrested were a .45 pistol, a magazine, ammunition, and sachets of suspected shabu. Meanwhile, troops of the Marine Battalion Landing Team-2, personnel of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), and other police units conducted an entrapment operation against the alleged selling of firearms in Barira, Maguindanao del Norte. The target of the operation was identified as alias 'Rokkie,' who is facing charges for murder, frustrated murder, and robbery. Instead of surrendering, the suspect allegedly opened fire, prompting authorities to return fire. The suspect was killed during the encounter. According to the 6th Infantry Division (6ID), the operation was launched after an informant tipped authorities that the suspect was allegedly planning to sell firearms in the area. During the operation, authorities seized several firearms, including an M16 rifle, M14 rifle, several magazines, ammunition, a grenade, and a caliber .45 pistol. 6ID added that the suspect was said to be part of an armed group allegedly involved in illegal activities, including gun-for-hire, robbery-holdup, and illegal drug trade in the region. 'Ang mga matagumpay na operasyong ito ay sumasalamin sa matatag na ugnayan at koordinasyon ng AFP at PNP. Patuloy nating pinapaigting ang suporta sa pagpapatupad ng batas upang gawing ligtas ang ating mga komunidad mula sa banta ng ilegal na droga, armas, at armadong grupo. Binabati ko ang ating mga tropa sa kanilang katapangan at mabilis na aksyon,' 6ID Commander, Major General Donald Gumiran, said. (These successful operations represent the firm connection and coordination between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. We will continue to intensify our support to enforce the law in order to safeguard our communities from the threat of illegal drugs, firearms and armed groups. I commend our troops for their courage and prompt action.) — GMA Regional TV News

Man on probation nabbed in South Cotabato drug bust

A 28-year-old man on probation was arrested during an anti-illegal drug operation in Polomolok, South Cotabato. According to the report of GMA Regional TV's Efren Mamac in '24 Oras' on Tuesday, the 28-year-old suspect tried to evade authorities as he was caught on camera speeding away in a white SUV. During his attempt to flee, the suspect hit a tricycle and tried to reverse his vehicle. Cops then shot at his wheels, the report added. 'Nung nalaman niyang operatiba pala o isang pulis ang kanyang katransakyon, pinilit niyang makasibat sa pagkakaaresto ng mga pulis,' said Polomolok Municipal Police Station chief Police Lt. Colonel Harold Cornel. (When he found out that he was transacting with a police officer, he tried to evade arrest.) The police seized 38 grams or P300,000 worth of shabu during the operation. 'He was previously arrested po ng PDEA and he is now on probation dahil nga po sa plea bargaining, kalalabas niya lang this February. Pagkalabas niya ng February, na-monitor po siya agad ng ating mga operatiba na ayun pong kanyang illegal transactions ay pinagpatuloy niya,' said Cornel. (He was previously arrested by the PDEA and he is now on probation because of a plea bargaining agreement. He was released last February. But our operatives monitored that he still continued his illegal transactions.) The suspect declined to comment on the matter. He is now facing charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act and for reckless imprudence resulting to damage to property. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News

Midwife behind botched circumcision on 10-year-old boy in Tondo arrested

The midwife who conducted a fatal circumcision operation on a 10-year-old in Tondo last May was arrested and was presented to the public on Monday alongside the most wanted suspects of Manila. Suspect Teresita Clarin was charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and illegal practice of medicine. Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso presented Clarin and three other suspects for various cases. Clarin looked down when she was called forward by Domagoso. 'Sagutin mo na lang sa mata ng batas ha? I hope maging takdang aral sa'yo 'yan,' said Domagoso. (Just answer in the eyes of the law, okay? I hope this will be a lesson to you.) 'Hindi na po ako…Hindi na po ako….', she said. (I won't do it…I won't do it…) 'Naiintindihan kita, kaya lang ito yung pamilya,' Domagoso replied as he pointed to the 10-year-old victim's mother who was also present. (I understand you, but the family is here.) 'Kayo na ang bahala, basta ito ay arestado na. Kung gusto niyo makamit ang hustisya, nasa inyo na po 'yun,' the mayor told the victim's mother. (Now that she's arrested, it's now up to you what to do next. If you want to achieve justice, it's now up to you.) Domagoso went to the victim's mother to comfort her when she became upset after seeing the suspect. 'Nakakalungkot, siyempre alam mo, katulad nito, senior citizen. Mahal na mahal ko ang mga 'yan. But what can we do? Sana maging takdang aral 'yan sa iba. I feel bad also for the victim and the family,' said Domagoso. (It's saddening, because in this case the suspect is a senior citizen. My heart goes to the elderly people there. But what can we do? I hope this will serve as a lesson for others. I feel bas also for the victim and the family.) The suspect was taken to the Manila Police District but was immediately released amid the pending autopsy of the victim. The suspect was also arrested in 2023 by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group after using the name and license number of a legitimate doctor whom she had worked with over 20 years ago. But she was later released on bail. The barangay also said the suspect does not have any permit to operate her lying-in clinic where the circumcision was performed. It was also reported that the victim was administered anesthesia—reportedly in the amount of 20cc, as per the clinic staff. According to the police's autopsy report, a brain hemorrhage possibly resulting from anesthesia caused the boy's death. The other suspects arrested and presented were Florencio Flores for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act, Jonas Bayubay for crime of frustrated murder, and Eddie Boy Savellano for qualified rape and acts of lasciviousness. — RF, GMA Integrated News
