49ers All-Pro Thrilled With Brock Purdy Extension
49ers All-Pro Thrilled With Brock Purdy Extension originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After months of debates and overreactions, the San Francisco 49ers found common ground on a long-term extension with quarterback Brock Purdy. Advertisement The former seventh-round steal turned Pro Bowler signed a five-year, $265 million extension with the 49ers this season that keeps Purdy as the team's franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. While many analysts around the league have criticized the 49ers for paying Purdy over $50 million annually, the 49ers locker room is thrilled with the announcement. Trent Williams, the future Hall-of-Fame tackle for San Francisco, clarified his thoughts on the extension. "It's super, super fulfilling just to watch a guy like Brock. When you talk about a Cinderella story, I think this is the epitome of that," Williams said. "Guy's going from making a few hundred thousand a year to making fifty million a year is astronomical. Advertisement "It couldn't have happened to a better guy. He is the guy for this team. He is the guy for this franchise." When Williams speaks, everyone tends to listen. The fact that Purdy has earned the respect of a top veteran like this cannot be overstated. He has been to the Super Bowl once in his career while helping the 49ers reach the Conference Title Game twice. The lone goal he needs to accomplish now is to find a way to not only get back to the Super Bowl but also win it. While Purdy has his work cut out for him there, the 49ers believe they can reach those heights with their quarterback leading the way. Washington Worry As Regression Predicted For Commanders?
How can the Washington Commanders possibly do better than their historic turnaround from last season? After winning just four games in 2023, the Commanders saw a nine-win jump in the regular season and reached the Conference Title Game for the first time in 30 years behind a new owner, general manager, head coach, and quarterback. Advertisement Sustaining success is a new thing for the franchise, though. And it's why one reporter believes a natural regression is coming for the Commanders. Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton believes the team will finish 10-7 in 2025 due to the team's tougher schedule, and holes along the defensive line. "While the Commanders offense looks better than last year's group on paper, the club will struggle to match up against top offensive attacks with its lackluster pass-rushing unit," Moton wrote. "Washington lost its 2024 sack leader, Dante Fowler Jr., in free agency. The Commanders will need more than Dorance Armstrong Jr. and Deatrich Wise to collapse the pocket on the edges. "Frankie Luvu and Daron Payne must be active near the line of scrimmage on passing downs." Advertisement Should Washington worry? Washington possesses one of the oldest rosters in the league despite their young quarterback. They will be expected to at least make the playoffs this year as part of their growth as an organization. And while 10 wins is nothing to scoff at - especially compared to past years for the franchise - the Commanders still have a lot to prove under new management at this time. Bills Select Defensive 'Steal' In New Mock Draft
The Buffalo Bills have their offense figured out. That much is known coming off another run to the Conference Title Game last season. It's the defense, though, that clearly needs more reinforcements. In most mock drafts around the country, the Bills are predicted to focus solely on the defensive side of the ball with the receiver position as a potential chip-in as part of the conversation. Advertisement ESPN's top draft analyst Mel Kiper agrees with that notion. The veteran analyst predicted that the Bills would not only draft a cornerback in Kentucky's Maxwell Hairston, but also defensive tackle Tyleik Williams and safety Xavier Watts with their second round selections. "Williams is stout against the run up the middle, but he also shows the quickness and suddenness to penetrate the backfield," Kiper said. "Over the past two seasons, he had 5.5 sacks, 34 pressures, 16.5 tackles for loss and 21 run stops. He could get into the mix up the middle with Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones, especially with Larry Ogunjobi suspended for six games." Watts is another player who Kiper believes would fill a hole in Buffalo's defense. While the Bills were not bad in any stretch last year on that side of the ball, they did lose key free agents like Rasul Douglas and Von Miller. Adding youth to the group is also something that many teams push for once they sign a star quarterback to a lucrative contract. With a collection of Hairston, Watts, and Williams, the Bills get that goal accomplished. Related: Bills Urged To Draft 'All-Pro' Talent In Major Move Related: Diggs Gets Intimate Dance From Cardi B
