Conley softball swept by South Caldwell in 4A State Championship Series
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCT) — Duke University was the site for the NCHSAA 4A Softball State Championships this weekend as D.H. Conley faced off against South Caldwell. The Vikings had won seven-straight before Friday's 3-1 loss to the Spartans in Game One. Grand jury investigating State Police recruit death

A lawyer for Delgado-Garcia has said the family wants closure in the case, answers about what happened, and assurances others will not meet the same fate. The use of a grand jury with subpoena powers to obtain State Police documents and sworn testimony could arm Meier with a voluminous record of evidence to examine as he determines whether any criminal charges are warranted, or whether he would make any policy recommendations to the attorney general or State Police, said Daniel Conley, a former Suffolk district attorney who led the office when Meier was its homicide chief in the 2000s. The call of the grand jury, Conley added, also shows Meier's willingness to use subpoena powers through the grand jury and seek sworn testimony from the State Police to gather the evidence he needs in his investigation. Conley said he hasn't discussed this investigation with Meier, but he expects Meier's use of the grand jury follows some of the strategies they had their homicide prosecutors take in building cases in gangland killings. In those cases, witnesses often were most helpful shortly after a homicide but would sometimes back out or change their story as the case dragged on. Advertisement 'One of the strategies that we developed was to get people in front of the grand jury relatively quickly, to put them under oath, and to lock in their testimony,' he said. 'You can't say no to the grand jury.' State grand juries consist of 23 people who hear evidence presented by a prosecutor. They're conducted behind closed doors, and various rules forbid disclosing grand jury testimony or speaking publicly about one while it is ongoing. The grand jury can vote on whether there's enough evidence to find probable cause that a crime occurred and to indict someone. The threshold for an indictment is lower than a criminal conviction, which requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt. If a person is indicted, charges are filed in Superior Court, and proceedings are then generally public. At least 14 grand jurors need to vote in the affirmative to bring charges forward, according to state Trial Court procedures. Joshua Levy, a former US attorney who is now in private practice, said grand jury investigations typically are used to build up and accumulate evidence against their intended targets, whatever that target may be. Anyone called before a grand jury can assert their Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, but prosecutors routinely offer people immunity if they are brought before a grand jury, he said. And if you're offered immunity, you must testify or face the possibility of being criminally charged with contempt of court. Throughout the proceedings, the grand jurors are able to ask questions of witnesses, often through the prosecutor. BVPD: Chilhowie man charged after over pound of meth discovered in traffic stop
BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A Chilhowie man received felony drug charges on May 14 after a traffic stop, according to a release from the Bristol, Virginia Police Department. Bristol, Virginia, vice/narcotics detectives and patrol officers reportedly stopped a vehicle in the 1400 block of Lee Highway on May 14 at 12:05 a.m. With the help of K9 Fanta, the department discovered approximately 569 grams of methamphetamine and 29 grams of cocaine in the vehicle, the release said. Washington County, Tennessee man facing child sex crime charges The vehicle's driver was identified as Wesley Conley, 43, of Chilhowie. Conley was charged with possession with intent to distribute more than 227 grams of methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. Memphis rooting guide: Former Grizzlies, Tigers, locals remaining in NBA playoffs

The days of a long Grizzlies playoff run or a possible championship will have to wait. For now, fans can still find rooting interests in players who are connected or familiar to Memphis. The Western Conference finals begin May 20 between the Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves, with the Eastern Conference finals starting May 21 between the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks. Memphis is known as a basketball city. There have been years when the city randomly is near the top of broadcast viewership ratings for the NBA Finals despite the Grizzlies never making it that far. Here are four players with Memphis ties who have a chance to win an NBA championship. Former Memphis Grizzlies Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley Jr. is the most notable name with Grizzlies ties remaining in the NBA playoffs. Conley, who played for Memphis from 2007 to 2019, remains the franchise leader in games played, points and steals, among other statistics. Advertisement Conley came off the bench for the Timberwolves seven times this season, his most since the 2008-09 season. However, the 37-year old vet has been a steady presence during the playoff run. Many Grizzlies fans were elated to see Marc Gasol win a championship ring in Toronto, and now it may be Conley's turn. Only one other former Grizzlies player remains in the postseason. Knicks guard Delon Wright had a short stay with the Grizzlies in 2019, but it was the best stretch of his career. He averaged 12.2 points while playing 30.8 minutes per game in 26 appearances. Wright is currently out of the Knicks rotation. Most of his postseason time has come in mop-up duty when the game is essentially decided. Former Memphis Tigers There's also two former Memphis Tigers players suiting up in the conference finals. Unless those two are in foul trouble, Achiuwa won't see much time. The 6-foot-8 forward spent one season with the Tigers before becoming a first-round pick in 2020 for the Miami Heat. He was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Year after averaging 15.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Two years after Achiuwa's standout season, freshman Josh Minott played one season with the Tigers before entering the NBA draft and being selected 45th overall in the second round. Minott has spent his first three NBA seasons with the Timberwolves. He averaged six minutes per game this season.
