Auburn center Connor Lew named to Remington Trophy Watch List

Auburn standout center Connor Lew received a prestigious recognition earlier this week. For the second season in a row, the junior was named to the Remington Trophy Watch List after a fantastic sophomore campaign. The award is given to the nation's best center. Lew has been the glue of Hugh Freeze's offensive line for nearly two full years, as the Kennesaw, Georgia native took over the staring center gig mid-way through his freshman season and has ran with it ever since. After claiming the SEC Freshman of the Week award against Mississippi State, the center finished his inaugural year on the Plains with spot on the SEC All-Freshman, 24/7 Sports True Freshman All-America, and PFF freshman All-America teams. The Tigers' most consistent lineman followed up his fantastic freshmen year with an equally sensational sophomore season. While Auburn's quarterback situation was fluid, the man giving the signal caller the football never changed, as Lew started every game for the Tigers, PFF Team of the Week honors against Georgia and the honor of being a Game Day Captain against Vanderbilt. With the hope for improved stability at the quarterback position after the commitment of Jackson Arnold and more playmakers across the Tigers offense, Lew has the best chance of his young career to stick out on a national stage. If he is able to continue his great play, it's very possible the junior could become the first Auburn center to win the Remington Trophy since Reese Dismukes in 2014. How does Auburn's offensive line stack up with the best in the nation?

How does the former Alabama quarterback compare Auburn's offensive line to the best in the nation? Auburn's offensive line returns plenty of experienced pieces and will be viewed as a strength this season. The likes of Connor Lew, Jeremiah Wright, Dillon Wade, and Izavion Miller bring 2,798 snaps of experience to the Tigers' offensive line from last year, with each possessing an efficiency rating of 96.1 or higher. It is no wonder that Auburn's offensive line is viewed as one of the best in the nation. ESPN analyst and former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy recently included Auburn in his top-10 offensive line rankings, placing the Tigers' experienced unit at No. 8 above Clemson and Oregon, and one spot below Penn State. "A lot of this has to do with the fact that a lot of guys are back," McElroy said during a recent episode of Always College Football, where he and former Auburn lineman Cole Cubelic broke down the nation's best offensive line units. "I thought last year's group collectively at season's end was playing really good football." Lew, Wade, and Wright anchored the offensive line last season. However, Wade played over 100 snaps at three different positions last season before setting up shop as the Tigers' starting left tackle for the final six games of the season. McElroy feels that is when Auburn's line began to gel. "I think Dillon Wade and Connor Lew once those guys kind of settled into the spots they ended up settling in at, Lew at center in particular, that was a huge difference maker," McElroy said. "They finally figured out that left tackle was a huge spot throughout the first six, seven, eight games last year. They finally get one guy out, put another guy in, and everything seems to calm down." Mixing the returners, plus Xavier Chaplin and Mason Murphy from the transfer portal, will put Auburn into a great position to become one of the top units in the nation, and McElroy believes that their ceiling is higher heading into the season. With Auburn also boasting one of the nation's best wide receiver rooms and a new quarterback in Jackson Arnold, offensive line play will be crucial this season, and Auburn's room will be up for the challenge. Hugh Freeze's Strong Leadership Endorsement For Auburn Star Lineman

There was not much to brag about when the Auburn Tigers ended their 2024 campaign with just five wins and seven losses. They could not even bring themselves to a bowl game with how badly the season went. Now, Coach Hugh Freeze's players know better as they all aim to get back to College Football Playoff contention. A lot of the Auburn squad were young guns throughout Coach Hugh Freeze's first two years with the Tigers. As the losses piled up, so did their experiences and veteran acumen. There's no greater example of this than Connor Lew. I think those guys took charge initially until guys like Jackson Arnold came in," Freeze said. Lew is now entering his third season with Auburn. He has played 23 games under Coach Freeze and is continuously striving to get better. In his first year, he saw the Tigers reach the Music City Bowl before losing to the Maryland Terrapins. Last season, everyone struggled as the team could not keep up with the intensity of the SEC. Advertisement Jackson Arnold is going to need guys who will keep the pocket from collapsing. With all of the learnings he has soaked up through heartbreaks, Lew could be the lineman that the quarterback needs to pop off.
