Timelines for swath of Victorian construction projects blow out
On the road network, the duplication of the Western Highway between Ballarat and Stawell still has no firm completion date despite being slated for 2021. The government's Big Build website says planning for the final section is still under way. Another project renewing sections of the Great Ocean Road, forecast to be completed this year, is expected to be four to six months behind schedule after already being pushed back from as far back as 2020. The Big Housing Build, a 2020 state government commitment to build 12,000 social and affordable homes over four years, is now forecast to be completed in 2028. The government says the $6.3 billion project will now deliver 13,300 social and affordable homes, with work on 10,100 complete or under way. A government spokesperson said the auditor-general's report was a 'snapshot in time' and information was provided 12 months ago. Other delays outlined in the report are no longer accurate and have not been included in this article. Improvements to Victoria's male prison system capacity, first forecast for 2023, are also delayed and unlikely to stay within budget because of black mould infestations affecting hundreds of new beds at Barwon Prison in Lara and the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Ravenhall. The Department of Justice and Community safety is currently negotiating with the contractors of the prison project and argues the works were not completed to standard. Infrastructure Australia's market capacity report, published in December 2024, said investment in transport projects was falling as billions of dollars more in funding flowed to energy and housing projects. Chief executive Adam Copp said at the time that the nation's infrastructure ambitions were being challenged by skills shortages, stagnant productivity growth and the rising costs of materials. 'Construction materials on average cost around 30 per cent more than they did three years ago, and with ongoing skills shortages we simply don't have the people power we need to get the job done on time – our analysis shows 7 per cent of the pipeline, or $15 billion of planned construction work, has been hampered by project delays,' Copp said in the report. Loading Copp said projects would also shift into regional areas and northern Australia, which would bring other challenges in attracting workers and supplying materials. Roads Australia chief executive Ehssan Veiszadeh has previously warned of the impact of delays, particularly those linked to union action. The peak body's members reported that repeated construction delays and poorer working environments added 30 per cent to the total costs of projects. 'On major public infrastructure worksites, workplace safety has not only been undermined – it has been weaponised,' Veiszadeh said. 'Worksites have been shut down for spurious reasons, sometimes costing up to $5 million a day. Often industrial action has targeted critical works such as concrete pours, which can have a cost impact of tens of millions of dollars.' This masthead's Building Bad investigation has detailed allegations of serious misconduct across government sites over the past year, including allegations gangland-linked figures were receiving large payments from companies on publicly funded projects looking to gain favour with figures within the CFMEU.

The increase was a result of additional cash held at December 31, 2024 due to a $58.9 million prepayment of revenue related to January 2025. Adjusted Earnings available to Common Shareholders of $0.57 per Common Share, basic, 2 compared to $0.13 for Q1 2024. Adjusted Earnings available to Common Shareholders 2 of $15.4 million compared to $3.7 million for Q1 2024 was due to the positive impacts of the sale of the RAL business and improved financial results primarily related to increased parts sales, contract flying, MRO and other revenue. First Quarter Summary In the first quarter of 2025, Chorus reported Adjusted EBITDA from continuing operations of $56.9 million, an increase of $2.8 million compared to the first quarter of 2024 primarily due to: an increase in Voyageur's parts sales, contract flying and MRO activity; and a decrease in general administrative expenses primarily attributable to lower overhead costs; partially offset by a decrease in capitalization of major maintenance overhauls on owned aircraft of $1.5 million; and a decrease in aircraft leasing revenue under the CPA of $0.7 million primarily due to a change in lease rates on certain aircraft partially offset by a higher US dollar exchange rate. Adjusted Net Income from continuing operations was $15.4 million for the quarter, an increase of $2.8 million compared to the first quarter of 2024 primarily due to: a $2.8 million increase in Adjusted EBITDA as previously described; and a decrease in net interest costs of $5.5 million primarily related to the repayment of the Series A Debentures at maturity, the partial repurchase of the Series B Debentures and Series C Debentures and the absence of any draw in the current quarter under the Operating Credit Facility; partially offset by an increase of $3.5 million in income tax expense; an increase in depreciation expense of $1.1 million primarily attributable to capital expenditures; and a negative change in foreign exchange of $1.0 million. Air Canada will determine the composition of the Covered Aircraft fleet on the condition that the fleet must have a minimum of 80 aircraft with 75-78 seats. As leases in respect of owned aircraft mature, the minimum 80 Covered Aircraft fleet will be composed of owned aircraft with lease extensions and/or other Covered Aircraft sourced by Air Canada. (3) Lease expiry dates for owned aircraft are as follows: Dash 8-400s: six expiries in November 2027, seven expiries in 2028 and 12 expiries in 2030; and for CRJ900s: five in 2028, eight in 2032 and one in 2033. Jazz has started the initial phase of an extensive cabin refurbishment program for aircraft operated under the Air Canada Express brand. This refurbishment program includes upgraded Wi-Fi connectivity, larger overhead storage bins, new lightweight seats, in-seat power supply, and refreshed cabin interiors for the E-175s and CRJ900s. In addition, a select number of Dash 8-400s will receive Wi-Fi connectivity for Toronto Billy Bishop service along with Jazz's previous announcement in May 2024 that its Dash 8-400 fleet would receive new lightweight seats as part of an emission reductions initiative. Kiwi Aidan Copp sets world shearing record in South Africa
Aidan Copp, 39, has set a new nine-hour world record for Merino lambs. A New Zealander has become the first shearer to set world records in three countries by establishing a new two-stand mark on Merino lambs over nine hours in South Africa overnight. Aidan Copp, 39, joined 38-year-old South African shearer and contractor Tienie du Plessis in setting the tally of 970 at Teebus Waters, near Steynsburg, inland Eastern Cape, about 330km northwest of coastal city East London. Copp grew up in West Melton, near Christchurch, but is based in New South Wales. Copp, who has also set records in New Zealand and Australia, shore 523 and du Plessis shore 447. The South African took up shearing full-time about 16 years ago after retiring from rugby with a fractured skull.
