Sports clubs to come up in all five zones in Tiruchi
Tiruchi Corporation has initiated measures to identify sites to establish indoor sports clubs in all five zones of the city.
In the 2025-26 Corporation Budget, a sum of ₹5 crore had been allocated under the General Funds to establish indoor sports clubs in all five zones. It had been decided to develop sports infrastructure for various games such as badminton, tennis, table tennis and swimming pool.
The Assistant Commissioners and junior engineers have been directed to shortlist the suitable sites for establishing the sports clubs. Underutilised spaces such as park sites and playgrounds, which are under the control of the Corporation, could be used for the purpose. It is aimed at creating the necessary infrastructure in decentralised locations so as to enable sports enthusiasts to make use of the facilities.
Preparation of the designs is underway, and a consultant will be appointed to prepare the detailed project report. 'Once the design and amenities are finalised, we will submit a proposal to the government for approval,' said a senior Corporation official.
The sports infrastructure could generate revenue for the Corporation.
According to officials, the proposed sports clubs aim at providing state-of-the-art facilities for residents, particularly youth, to engage in various sports and games. The project is expected to boost the city's sports infrastructure and encourage a healthy lifestyle among citizens.
At present, a sports complex is being constructed on 2.3 acre of land near uzhavar santhai at Anna Nagar. A sum of ₹5.5 crore has been sanctioned under the State Finance Commission Grant to develop the sports complex. The facility will have an indoor badminton court, tennis court, swimming pool, gazebo, recreational space, and a modern gym.
